Rain…Harsh, heavy rain pounded against the ground creating deep pocketed pools of water in the soft Carolina clay. Lightening streaked across the sky turning the night into day followed by the delayed response of thunder. Kane glanced down at the ground watching puddles of water cover the tops of his boots. Maybe he should head back home. It didn’t look as if the storm was going to pass any time soon.

Kane stared through the dense trees searching for the sound that lured him into the stormy night to begin with. He had trekked through as much he could on foot within the distance that he would hear such a sound but came up with nothing. It was time for him to turn back. It had to be his mind playing tricks on him.

Or it was the Aniwaya clan.

But he would have felt the presence of the Aniwayas.

Blood recognizes blood.

He pried his mud covered shoes out of their prison and began to change his course for home. Then he heard it again. Kane reached into his side pocket and pulled out a blade. His three quarter length hunting knife glinted in the moonlight an object that is deemed deadly in his hands. Senses keen and poised to strike, he ran in the direction the sound came.

Sleuth-footed, Kane bounded towards the clearing he was familiar with ahead of him. There was nothing but death a few yards ahead because you would be staring at the edge of the world on top of the mountain he lived upon. Whatever it had to be wasn’t getting far. Kane slowed his break neck pace and stopped behind a tree to peer around it to take a look out over the miniscule piece of land that jutted out providing the mountains edge. Tree bark scraped his skin as droplets of rain dripped from his hair into his mouth while he squinted to make out a shadowy figure standing on the precipice of the mountain.

Something went off in his brain to move fast. The shapes ahead of him formed together the closer he got and he could soon make out a frame that was smaller than his. Not one of a man…but a woman. Remnants of a dress the color of burnt lilacs clung to her body like a second skin, the thin material framing every curve.  It hung off of her body ripped at the shoulder and torn at the hem as if she was in a fight before she ended up on top of a mountain. The rain plastered her tight curls to her head and neck, letting him know that she was not from these parts.

So where did she come from? The main road was miles away.  She just couldn’t have appeared out of nowhere only to stand with her feet hanging over the side facing an endless abyss below. Kane steadied his breathing watching as she wrapped her arms around herself, her body shaking unprotected from the wind and rain that blew through her tattered dress all the way down to her shoeless feet.

Who the hell was she? And why was she on his mountain?

She took a step closer to the edge and Kane’s muscles tensed.  Springing from his hiding place, Kane used his gift of speed to try and reach her in time but she hesitated giving him the few extra moments he needed.

“STOP!” He yelled over the crack of thunder. She swiveled around, startled…her eyes searching through the rain. There was no mistaking the tears that streaked her cheeks from her blood shot eyes even in the storm.

Her true intentions were to jump. And that he could not allow…

He could hear her blood pumping fearfully in his ears…then her eyes met his. He had seen that look in her eyes before…Hopelessness.

He had seen it in his people for many years as they waited for the high priestess to come and restore their withering fate. The young branded it as fairy tales the elders spoke of to bring hope to the last six clans until recently…There has been talk that the queen has finally found her home amongst her people and in fact had completed the bonding ceremony.

Taking a step towards her, he held out his hand. She stared at it and at him blankly…unafraid, but not one attempt was made by the woman to take a hold of his hand.

“Take my hand.” He said. He reached out for her silently asking the creator to intervene. His request was a simple one but the one god had a sense of humor. Kane stopped inching to her to look down at his hands.

He was changing!

Eyes wide with fear watching his pre-mature change, he looked up at the woman but her eyes burned into his body neither flinching when the transformation began.

Kane fought to gain control that he had mastered since he was an adolescent pup. The woman turned her head out to face the mountain’s edge unaffected by the sight of his curse that was bestowed onto the Aniwaya Clan thanks to the high priestess as she searched for her conspirators during her first reign which led to the extinction of the Aniwodi clan.

Lightening lit up the sky giving the distraction Kane looked for to get to her. Planting his feet deep into the mud, he jumped taking advantage of the change. Kane keen sight has always been accurate and he had calculated the distance correctly now… then why was he falling. He plummeted over the side of the cliff and the last thing he saw as he fell was her face staring as he fell to into blackness.
