Jennifer had to run from her pack. She couldn’t stay there. Her father had decided to give her away to the new pack leader. He was cruel and heartless, uncaring of the feeling of others. He was the one who killed their previous alpha and took over after the alpha made a law he didn’t like. He challenged him and killed him, not even bothering to let him hang his head in shame and go back to his family.

She shuddered at the mere thought of him and his bald head. He wasn’t as tall as most wolves, but was stocky with not even one scar on his body. It showed how strong he was. Then there was his eyes…They were endless pits of darkness. Her father had given her to him after he killed the alpha to protect the rest of the pack.

To hell with the pack.

Looking both ways on the highway she jet across hopped the wall, slid down the hill and ran into the back alley of the city. The pack would lose her scent in this overwhelming stench of a city, and she would take a bus to New Hampshire where there was enough forest and freedom from her own pack. She pulled her hair from its ponytail and let the long length brush against the crowd she forced herself into.

Seven years later…

Jennifer arched her back in a painful stretch until she heard bone crack before going back to the computer and typing in next month’s schedule. She had gone from Florida to New Hampshire, becoming a winter wolf rather than being a summer wolf. She worked as a secretary now in a small contracting company that also had a wood shop in the back to restore old and used furniture and create other pieces as well. She had worked here for six years finally finding her boss David England in need of someone to help organize his company.

She no longer looked over her shoulder and try and sniff out those of her pack. Then again she found something that blocked her scent with this special spray she had found that hunters used while going out into the forest. Then she turned around and used actual perfume. Paris Hilton and Halle Berry she believed to be precise.

The door to the shop opened and her boss, David walked in, rubbing his clean shaven face. “Stephanie I need you to cancel tomorrow’s job at two. Jeremy is in the hospital and I don’t have a replacement.” He spoke as he crossed the guest space to the steel door that led to the wooden workshop.

“Will he be alright?” She asked.

“Yes. He broke his leg falling down some stairs and will be out of commission for a bit.” David was around six-one with grey hairs coming in on the sides of his dark hair with a soft face structure and light brown eyes. He was built where it counted and never really had conversations with people unless it involved him ordering other people around or talking to his daughters.

“Do you want me to send him a get well card?” She asked. He shook his head as he opened the door to the wood shop and then disappeared. Jennifer looked at the name on the desk in front of her. Stephanie Miller. She had legally changed her name in Virginia when she found out they would the change private like all other name changes. It was a good idea and they didn’t give her any problems after she told them that she was trying to move away from her old boring life in Florida and her parents threatened to have a P.I. follow and then take her back home. She had brought on some fake tears and the nerdy man working there had hugged her and brought her over to fill out the forms.

Jennifer Kingsley was now gone, nothing but a distant memory. She had her original papers with her, her birth certificate, high school diploma and college degree, but the state had changed them all for her so that she could still use them when she moved to New Hampshire.

She called to cancel the job tomorrow at two and called Jeremy anyway on his cell to wish him well before she took a quick dash to the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee and a snack before running back to her desk. When no one was in the room she walked over to the mirror and checked out her hat hair. It was no longer the ass length it had once been, but short and spiked out in different directions only long enough to grab a small handful. The color was the same rich brown it had always been. Her skin was no longer a deep caramel color from the constant sun, but a shades and shades lighter almost a cream color. Her hazel brown eyes were still the same and the only other thing that had changed was her pierced ears and belly button. Wolves didn’t pierce their bodies, but she did to throw anybody off.

The day was calm and no one had come in, but three people had called and asked to schedule an appointment. She left a note and told them that she would get back to them as soon as possible with a date. It wasn’t like they had much going on after next week, but David got upset if she planned things on her own. She was here to organize not run and decide.

After her work day ended at four thirty in the afternoon she walked to a bus stop and took the bus home to her apartment four miles away in the city. She lived in a restored brick building, her apartment a gorgeous loft with only one separate bedroom and bath. The rest was an open space for her to shift and roll around as she pleased if she was too lazy to leave her apartment. Jen had a Persian cat, Kingsley that lived with her, sleeping in her bed, eating off her plate, and playing with her when she turned wolf in the house.

He was a stray she picked up as a kitten with a broken leg when she first moved in. Now they were best friends and she loved him to death. She sat down on the couch after tossing her jacket aside and turned on the TV. She didn’t have cable, but she watched a lot of movies and TV shows on Netflix. Beside that she only had her laptop which hooked up to the coffee shop’s WiFi below her. It was password encoded and only regular customers got the code. She made herself a dedicated coffee drinker and always had their coffee in the morning.

Kingsley jumped up on the couch and curled into a ball on her lap. She stroked his fur while continuing her marathon of Lost. She watched all the anime on Netflix and was now going for every other show that caught her interest. She also used the library religiously, constantly taking out shows and movies. Her books, she purchased.

They were all displayed on the huge bookcases that stretched the lofts space until it reach the kitchen. Not all her shelves were covered, but most were. Manga, auto-biographies, Romance, survival and every other subject she could get her hands on. One entire shelf length was covered in history text books and history romance. She loved history. From there on they were organized from genre then by author, and then by series. She tried to get all her books in paperback but most textbooks were hardcover so she had to deal with it.

She had read each and every one of them, some twice, some more than ten times. She even had children’s book in the draw at the bottom that she read to Kingsley when he wouldn’t stop meowing and rubbing himself against the draw. He liked to be read to. Liked to be spoke too in general.

When it was eight o’clock she was changed into jogging pants and her workout sweatshirt and running sneakers. She left her apartment and jogged down to the closet hiking path there. It took an hour to get to and she ran up the incline, her wolf as close to being out for tonight as she listened to nature around her. She still hadn’t gotten use to the cold, but she got use to the smell. She lived near a pack, but she never approached them seeing that they were at the top of the mountain and down the other side. Jennifer made it to the to the cliff part that is normally climbed and then turned back, winding around trees as she headed back down the path and on her way home. It took a good four hours to work out and she was home by twelve, showered by twelve fifteen and in bed at twelve thirty.

This was her normal day schedule.

Lucas smelled something off. He had traveled further down then usual on the mountain and caught a whiff of a female wolf. It was slight, but it was there. None of his wolves were on this side of the moment. It was just him, checking to see if any other wolves were trying to claim his pack land. A female couldn’t become alpha and wasn’t a threat to anyone but herself.

Females lived with packs, not by themselves, but since he didn’t have any valid evidence of her even being there besides a scent in the air he could do nothing but turn his wolf form around and make it pack it to his pack. He was home around one-thirty in his house at the top of the mountain. The home was an old styled Victorian, big in size and solid in structure no thanks to his father’s building skills. No storm had ever done any real damage to the home.

He shifted forms on the porch and entered his home naked as usual, ignoring his beta when he called for him. Lucas went into his room and threw himself into the bathtub while the heated water filled around him. He had been shifting in and out of his wolf form a lot and had been challenged twice by two different wolves. His back was stick sore and his scratches finally healing over. Maybe this time he wouldn’t get scars.

You always get scars…

James, his Beta came in minutes later, wearing only worn jeans and his silver cross. Funny how wolves weren’t allergic to silver and didn’t change into actual werewolves. It was an insult really to think that they shifted into such horrendous forms. Those were skin walkers. Wolves only shifted from human to wolf form. They were just a tad bigger than normal wolves.

“Miranda wants you to mate with her. She has been calling and calling and then she came over to try and find you herself.” Lucas chuckled. James was on the short side standing beside Lucas’s six-eight height while he was only six-two. James had blonde hair and dark chocolate eyes with a flawless face of high cheek bones and an aristocrat nose. His scars were few and on his back only. Luca’s were everywhere. “It’s not funny. She is dead serious and she wagging her little tail everywhere saying that you are going to mate with her and she will be the new alpha bitch.”

“Miranda is nothing. I don’t think I have ever slept with her either. I will talk to her when I feel like dealing with her screeches and high pitched voice.” Lucas spoke as he rubbed his face. He hadn’t shaved in a few days and could feel the hair growing along his mouth and jaw. He felt the scar running diagonally across his face from the left of his forehead across his nose and middle of his right cheek. There was a thinner scar below it only making it to the top corner of his left eyebrow. The top claw mark had faded and healed perfectly.

“Well you should talk to her soon. I can’t deal with much more. I might just end up strangling her.” James spoke dramatically. Lucas barked out a laugh that ended in a wince as he felt the pain in his back shoot up to his head and make him slightly dizzy. James stared at him. “Anything new on the search on the other side?” He asked changing subjects.

“I caught a whiff of a female wolf. Just a whiff.” Lucas replied as he shifted in his seat and turned the jets on to massage his sore muscles and probably hurt his back some more. “I don’t know if it was just one of the shewolves following me or a shewolf on her own.”

“Everyone went out for their normal run tonight. The wind probably picked up their scent and carried it across the mountains.” James pointed out.

“You could be right. I’m going to go out again tomorrow and check. Just to make sure.” James nodded and left the master bath with the doors opened.

After an hour or so Lucas left the tub and took a shower in the plus sized marbled encased shower with multiple shower heads and jet streams. He got out and checked his back in the mirror. He saw the claw marks on his back and one bite mark close to his side. They weren’t deep, but they still stung with every move and for some reason his back hurt like someone took a sledge hammer to it. Lucas turned to stare at his front in the mirror. His stomach and chest had more scars. He had scars disappearing down his stomach, close to his groin from the near death fight with his older brother. He had gone for an artery, but had just missed. His tattoos were ruined by all the scars he carried.

Most wolves recovered flawless from their wounds unless they were done over and over or deadly. His body decided not to be like most wolves and heal only when it wanted and to scar whenever possible. His dark hair was cut close to his head and somewhat thin and plain and his nose was broken and put back in place about six times. His eyes were a light silver color rimmed in neon blue. It had once been his most noted feature until the scars began to pile up.

It made him seem like one big beast.
