Chapter Three

Standing on the edge of the field getting ready to cross it, you can see the tops of trees coming out of the snow giving the illusion of bushes, this is when you notice the depth of the snow and its effects. Sometimes its hard to believe that there are people dead, buried just below your feet, trapped through the harsh conditions brought on by the freak storm.

I started to hear a noise in the distance, I couldn’t figure it out, where was the noise coming from? Quickly trying to place what kind of sound it was, it started getting closer and closer then it hit me, it was gun shots! I quickly hid myself behind the first bush I could reach, diving to it quickly hiding myself from the sudden ambush. As soon as I hit the ground around the bush snow fell down and covered half of my Kjus Supersonic Jacket, fortunately this covered me enough so I could not be seen. As I slowly peered over the top of the bush I notice a man running for his life, another shot went off from behind the trees where the man had just come from, the man hit the floor like a log, face first into the snow. I had never seen anything like this in my life, maybe in the movies, but seeing it in the flesh, I was shaking and tears were running down my face. I was so scared, what if who ever shot that guy was coming after me? A group of people ran from behind the tree shouting and still shooting the guy even though he was clearly dead, they were laughing and shouting at him as if it were a game to them, I could tell they were getting some sort enjoyment out of it. Why were they doing this? I didn’t know what to do, this had been the first time I had seen someone in 4 days, but I knew that I shouldn’t even think about going up to them, they would shoot me before I had anything to say. I started thinking to myself that this kind of behaviour could be happening everywhere and that I should have stayed back at the flat, but I couldn’t just leave the love of my life the fend for herself, I needed to find her and never leave her side again!

15 minutes had passed and the group of people had got bored and decided to move on, hoping to find someone else to use as target practice for this messed up game they seemed to enjoy playing so much. As they slowly got out of view and the sound of them slowly disappeared I made my way out from behind the cover. I quickly rushed to get to the middle of field where there was more cover for me to use get to the other side.

I had to walk past the dead guy, it wasn't something I wanted to walk past, the thought was making my stomach churn, I couldn't avoid it as it was the quickest route through the field. As I got close to the body you could see the amount of blood that was slowly poring out of him, all his life draining out of him, that could have been me. The thought was terrifying but I had to push on, I couldn't keep thinking like this or I would get nowhere. The group of people had shot him well over 20 times, which was insane if they were to survive out here they could of shot foxes or birds to eat, I just couldn't understand why it had happened. What did this guy do to deserve such a sticky end to his life? I felt so bad for just walking past the dead body, he was face first in a pool of his own blood, but again the though hit me, I’m glad I didn’t have to join him, I was much more careful than him.

As I reached the middle of the field my legs started getting weak, I really needed to rest but where, what if that group came back? Walking in the snow you burn so much body fat, its so hard to balance out, it probably didn’t help with the amount of gear I was carrying, but I felt it was necessary, I though it would help not really being that experienced in this sort of situation. I unclipped my pack and dropped it to the ground and covered my face in the snow, just to cool down. I pulled out a Chocolate bar and started hungrily devouring it to keep up my energy, finishing off with a can of coke keeping up my sugar levels giving me more energy to keep warm. Then had a smoke which made me feel even better, giving me the burst of energy that I needed. I hauled myself up and strapped on my pack and then unclipped the shotgun from the side and cocked it, I didn’t want any more visits on my journey.

As I started walking I hear a snap of the twig, done a 180 turn and aimed my shotgun. There was a guy standing there with a .22 pistol pointing at me, we stood there looking at each other which seemed like hours, then he said 'give me what's in that bag and no one gets hurt'

I looked at him like he was stupid and quickly said 'not going to happen mate, better leave me alone and I wont have to kill you'.

'I don’t want to kill you man, give me the fucking bag!'

then all of a sudden I squeezed the trigger a little too hard and the shotgun went off, in a panic reaction as soon as my gun went off so did his, the shot hit me straight in the leg making me drop to the floor fast, moaning in pain while grabbing my leg I turned to look at him, thinking he was going to shoot me again 'okay, I don't think your going to shoot me again' looking at the stump where his head was

'why the fuck did you shoot me in the leg you fuck!' I shouted in pain. I dragged my body towards his pulling the gun away from him and putting it in my bag, then I ripped a bit of cloth from his jacket and wrapped it around my leg to try and stop the bleeding. I was pretty lucky it was only a flesh wound as the amount of walking I had to do and not knowing where I would be able to heal myself. I picked myself up and started hopping along to get away from any more surprise visitors. While hopping to the bushes on the other side I started thinking to myself, this world hasn't really changed that much, people still want to steal things that is not theirs. At least one of them is long gone.
