Chapter 1

A knock at the penthouse apartment door had Anna freezing in place. Alexander wasn’t supposed to be home for hours and he hadn’t mentioned expecting anyone today at the apartment. The cleaner had long come and gone. The knock sounded again louder making her jump slightly. Her heart started to pound, the sound sounded more forceful.  The t-shirt that she’d been in the process of folding to pack into her open suit case on the bed dropped unfolded from her shaky fingers. She left the room making sure to close the bedroom door on her way out, if whoever was at the door was connected to Alexander and found out she was in the midst of packing she’d be in so much trouble.  The pent house she was living in with alexander was open planned with a sitting area, dining area and a kitchen. The whole apartment was stylishly decorated but had no personal touches, not even a personal photograph sat in a frame on one of the tables or on the mantle pieces like most households had. That was one of the many things she wouldn’t miss about this place. Alexander’s house matched his personality, neither of them had one.  Anna was leaving today. Nothing would stop her; she’d no longer be Alexander’s mistress. She’d no longer put up with his lies and deceitful ways.

Alexander had been charming when she’d first met him–taking a lost naïve girl from Brooklyn, New York, sweeping her off her feet with sweet words and the promise of love and protection–what more could a girl want? What a fool she had been. It hadn’t taken two months for the cracks to show, though she’d dismissed them at first, she’d been completely smitten by him.

The knock sounded again even louder this time, drawing her form her thoughts. Whoever it was knew she or someone would be inside otherwise they’d have left after the first knock with no answer. Creeping up to the front door she placed her hands onto it, and then lifted up onto her toes to look through the peep hole. A gasp escaped her lips. Stephano de Santis stood on the other side of the door. What was he doing here?  It was a known fact that he and Alexander were business rivals. Why would he be knocking on his door? He’d obviously heard her gasp because his head swivelled towards the door, his eyes seemingly seeing straight into hers through the peep hole. A knowing smile tilted his lips.

“Will you open the door, sweet Anna?” He asked. Oh how she loved the way he spoke her name. The Italian drawl made her body heat and a sexual shiver wrap around her body. The man was still sex on legs. She’d met him a month ago at a function dinner. Alexander had left her alone at the bar as he usually did while he talked to a business associate in another room.  Stephano had sauntered straight over to her, brought her a drink and offered her his company. She’d never been so aware of her body when in his presence. Alexander’s charm had nothing on Stefano’s allure.

“I know your there, Anna.” He called through the door, speaking her name again making her body tingle in places that hadn’t for a long time. “I’m not leaving until you open the door.”

“What do you want?” She managed to ask, her voice gravelly with things she didn’t want to name. “Alexander is not here.”

“I’m here to see you, actually.” The admission shocked her, why would he want to speak with her? He and Alex barely tolerated each other and she’d barely said a word to Stephano before.

“Alexander will be home any minute, so you should leave.” She panicked, grasping at straws.

“Oh Alexander will be busy all day I’m sure. I have seen to that. We are alone.” An icy chill ran down her spine. What did he mean by that? Heaving a deep sigh Anna stepped back and opened the door. Stefano stood with his hands stuffed into his black trouser pockets, the smile on his face widened as he scanned her up and down with those sensual mocha brown eyes, the action had the same effect on her as his touch would. Her skin prickled with goose flesh wherever his eyes sought. A dark eyebrow arched when his gaze landed on her breasts and stayed there. Her nipples had hardened, straining against the material of her T-shirt as if trying to reach out to him. Anna defensively crossed her arms over her chest. Today was definitely a bad day to skip wearing a bra. It was a stupid idea now that she thought about it, she’d been planning to make a run for it, and what full chested woman could ever run without a bra?

“Well?” She asked in a clipped tone.

“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” His eyes trailed back up her face, his eyes boring into hers made her want to melt.

“What, are you a vampire or something? Can’t come in without being invited? If that’s the case I’m afraid you’re screwed, because I don’t own the place,” god, what was wrong with her? Her childish response surprised her. She felt so out of control and he’d only been within touching distance for a few minutes.

A deep throaty laugh met her heated response. “You truly are a delight, sweet Anna. Sadly no, I am not a vampire.” He took a step over the threshold and gave her a knowing look as if to prove her wrong. “Though I guess it would come in handy from time to time.” His step brought him closer to her, making her take two back. DANGER! Her mind screamed. His brow arched in question but before he could speak she asked in calm less rambled manner.

“So what are you doing here? You said you wanted to see me?”

“Ah. Yes,” He closed the door behind him. “Let’s sit shall we?” Unbuttoning his matching black blazer he took a seat on Alexander’s white leather designer couch. He leaned back, crossing his ankle onto his knee, his hands clasped together in his lap. He looked way to comfortable for her liking. Anna sat on the couch opposite him, putting the glass coffee table between them.

“I have somewhere to be,” She told him. “So, I hope this won’t take too long.”

“About that,” a smug devilish smile creased his lips, making her stomach flutter with nerves. “I had the car, and also the plane ticket you ordered cancelled.”

Dumb founded Anna stared at the man across her in shock. A sick feeling of dread started to creep up her stomach. How did he know she was leaving? She hadn’t told anyone, and if he knew…

“Alexander” She gasped, her hand going to her mouth as bile ran up her throat.

“Relax. He knows nothing. I have all of Alexander’s phones tapped. When I saw you last month with him I had yours tapped too.” He unfolded his legs and leaned towards her. “One of my secretaries’ brought your last phone call to my attention. It was very interesting. Very informative–” He left the sentence dangling, he knew everything and he was very pleased with himself.

Enraged Anna stood from the couch. “You have no right to listen to my calls, or anyone else’s for that matter. How dare you cancel my car and flight?”

He stood and crossed the distance between them until he was looming over her, so temptingly close with all that muscle bunched under the shirt that left nothing to imagination, even though it covered his entire chest. As much as she wanted to hate him for ruining her plans she still wanted to savagely rip his clothes off and take him to bed. The rage she felt only fuelled her desire. Her cheeks flushed, though she didn’t know if they did in anger or because of the sudden wetness at her cleft.

“Alexander would have stopped you before you even got onto the plane. I’m sure he has your credit card checked regularly. I wouldn’t trust any of my mistresses with a credit card, and if I did I’d have every transaction checked.” He paused to scan her over again. “I must say though, you must impress him; he must trust you a fair amount to not have anyone watch over you. Unless, you are a part of his master plan to take me down, though so far I have found nothing to support that theory, which is why I cancelled your car and flight. I am here to help you, Anna.” The devilish Cheshire-cat grin was back. “For a price of course,”

“Help me?” She snorted. “I don’t want any help, especially yours.”

“Sweet Anna, so naive” He reached out and touched her cheek with his right hand, his long soft fingers caressing her skin, her face flamed under the tips. “I’m a man of my word. I’m the kind of man you want on your side when Alexander finds out you’re gone. You know he’ll track you down.”

“And what do you want in return?” She glared up at him. His eyes raked her over again, his brown eyes seemed to darken in desire when they landed back onto hers. No doubt her eyes mirrored his.

“I’m not a prostitute, Mr Di Santis,” her voice was shaky. “And I’m not interested.” Liar. She wanted him so bad it took everything ounce of strength in her not to lean up and meet his lips with hers. Those perfect cupid bow shaped full lips. His tongue traced his bottom lip slowly. Anna watched helplessly as his mouth turned up into a knowing smile.

“While you are a tempting little thing Anna, I’m not interested in sexual payment.” His hand left her face. The loss of his touch seemed to clear her foggy mind and anger started to override the desire she felt. “Now I don’t usually offer to help people more than once, though I’ll make an exception for you. For your help, Anna Stevens, in return I will make sure Alexander has no way to trace you or your family. You will be safe. You can move on with your life.” Sincerity shone in his eyes, but Anna had met many men like him over the course of her and Alexander’s relationship. She’d been sucked into their charms and wouldn’t fall for it again.

“What do you want help with exactly?” Her eyes narrowed.

“Alexander can be a callus man, especially in business. He’s a snake. He has been an enemy of mine – I guess you could say – For some time now, and I heard from your phone calls he’s not your most favourite person either. I want to ‘out’ him, for all the dodgy business deals and fraudulent acts he’s committed. For all the companies he’s taken, I want to destroy him.” A look of distaste crossed Stefano’s face. “I just need some proof. That’s where you come in.”

“Are you serious?” Anna laughed in shock. “Do you have any idea what would happen if he found me snooping through his things? I’m leaving here today. Thank you for offering to help me, but I’m fine. Now if you could let yourself out. I have some packing to finish.” She forced a smile to be polite then turned her back on him, ready to walk back to her room, but his calling voice stopped her in her tracks.

“I was polite before, Anna. But don’t think I didn’t come here prepared for you to refuse my offer. I know everything about you I need to. Even your dirty little secrets–” She turned back to face him, her arms crossing over her chest. She challenged him with her stare, daring him to mess with her. She didn’t cower to anyone. He could make his proposal or threat, whatever he wanted to call it, and then she was kicking his–no doubt perfectly rounded ass–out of the apartment.

“I have her, Anna.” Those words caused her heart to sink because she knew, even before he said the next words what he was about to reveal.  “I have your daughter. She’s at my home in Italy. I’m her guardian now, and unless you help me. You’ll never get to meet her.”

Stephano revelled in the shocked expression that crossed Anna’s cute little face, which he decided right then was a double of the plump little girl he’d placed under his care in Italy.

He’d heard so much about Anna, even before he’d met her at the function last month. When he’d heard she was connected to Alexander he had been desperate to meet her. Meet the woman who seduced rich men, captivating them with her charm, beauty and supposedly innocent ways. Only to later threaten to exploit them with outrageous claims, unless she was to receive a no doubt obscene amount of money. Stephano had met many women like her and it was convenient that he could not only punish her for her past actions, but to also use her to help him tear down Alexander. Hitting two birds with one stone.

Stephano could imagine the task becoming quite troublesome since they’d be spending a lot of time together in such close proximity, and the young beauty standing before him was proving too tempting to resist already, he couldn’t imagine how his lust would grow over the next upcoming weeks.

Anna’s red hair was hanging loose and wavy about her shoulders today, such a contrast to the sleek up do she’d worn on their previous encounter. The image of her was still clear in his mind even now a month later. She really was an enchanting woman who seemed oblivious to the attention bestowed on her when she entered a room. Her large eyes shone an emerald green that were fanned by almost brown lashes that was a touch darker than the hair upon her head, he couldn’t help but wonder if she wore that beautiful colour between her thighs, or waxed it off like so many women seemed to now a days.

Being native to Italy and spending such a vast amount of time out there, he’d never seen a woman who was a natural red head with such pale skin. He found it strangely beautiful and knew he’d miss it when the Italian heat darkened her. Anna’s nose was small but the tip turned up slightly, her lips called to him, begging him to kiss them. They had a slight plumpness to them that he could imagine would feel amazing wrapped around his–

“You took my daughter?” Anna’s whimper drew him from his thoughts, a lump instantly formed in his throat and a bulge instantly rose in his pants. Stephano shifted on his feet, feeling the erection straining against the crotch of his pants. Thankfully Anna was too busy staring at him with a distraught look about her to notice his growing problem.

“Yes,” he stated the truth then cleared his throat. “She was with foster parents. Her second foster parents since you dumped her by the way, I can’t fathom why. I find myself quite attached to her. She has her father’s eyes.” He deliberately smiled on the last words.

“You know nothing about her father.” She ground out, her voice growing deep in rage. She really was beautiful when angry, her eyes seemed to brighten, and her cheeks flushed a delectable pink, he could imagine her underneath him on his bed, writhing about on his satin sheets, her eyes bright with desire, and her cheeks warm in pleasure. He felt his cock stir in his pants which angered him, damned thing couldn’t grow any bigger yet it tried. She was working her magic on him already and she wasn’t even trying! He met her glare with a fierce one of his own.

“Ryan Jacobs was a very close friend of mine, we hadn’t talked in a while, and then he called me out of the blue, ecstatic that he had become a father. I was very busy with an important business deal at the time so I told him I’d be down within two weeks after the call, then tragically he died and his mistress took off with his baby and a very large check. I should have kept tabs on the child because I’ve known a lot of women like you, Anna, heartless women like you. It still shocks me that a woman could dump her child into the care system.” He ground out through gritted teeth. He hated her for what she’d done to such an innocent baby, no child deserved to grow up without their parents.

“I didn’t have the money to raise her,” she protested. “I wanted what was best for–” He cut her off not wanting to hear any of her excuses.

“Enough.” His clipped tone made her quiet. “I need the proof, Anna. Help me take down Alexander, and I’ll take you to Italy with me, to your daughter.” He wasn’t about to tell her yet how he only planned for her to see the baby while he needed her. She’d dumped the child once before, he wouldn’t give her a chance to repeat the action again.

“Fine,” she crossed her arms across her chest and glared daggers at him. “What do I have to do?”
