Prologue

Pain, that’s all that registered through her mind. So much pain, every nerve ending inside of her felt like it was being continuously zapped by electrical currents, that caused her aching body to jerk uncomfortably until she didn’t feel like a person anymore, just a burning ball of pain. She knew it would end, it always did after a few minutes, but those few minutes felt like a lifetime with its intensity.

She seemed to be caught between life and death, the pain kept her earth bound yet her limbs flouted peacefully, her eyes wouldn’t open, she was simply too weak. But the feeling was how she’d describe a child in its mother’s womb, when the pain disappeared she felt warm, safe in her own little bubble. In that state she could happily stay forever. Muffled voices sounded and the pain started to lessen. The searing pain that had felt like a hot rod was being thrust into her skin and scraped across her bones ended as abruptly as it started. Naturally in her flowing surroundings she uncurled from the foetal position the pain had rendered her into and lazily stretched out her lethargic muscles, her palms touched solid wall which she eagerly explored, not looking to find anything, she was just curious. The muffled voices continued to sound but she couldn’t make out of what they spoke, they could be talking Japanese and she wouldn’t understand.

A knock on the wall against her hand brought a smile to her lips and she giggled like a child into the mask that settled over her mouth. She mimicked the sound by rapping her knuckles against the wall once, her reply was three back which she again mimicked. Waiting to play some more she pouted when the voices continued and the knocking stopped. Why won’t they play with me? I’m so lonely.

Another sound followed the voices and her body spun slightly as the warm heat wrapped around her, hugging her with its comfort. The heat disappeared from the top of her head making her frown, coldness settled in its place and began to travel over her face slowly. What is happening? The cold continued to touch her skin as the warmth settled her feet onto a hard surface. No, where are you going? Don’t leave me alone. When the warmth disappeared completely and a chill like nothing she’d ever felt before washed over her skin, she collapsed against the ground. The coldness brought awareness back to her brain and without the warm pressure against her eye lids she was able to lift them. She immediately closed them when a light that shone so bright, burned into them. Her right arm which felt so heavy that for a second she didn’t believe that she could move the limb, lifted to shield her stinging eyes, a whooshing noise sounded before her, but she didn’t uncover her eyes. An ache had settled in her forehead from the piercing brightness.

Something touched her wrist, wrapping around it until it was pulled away. She tried to fight against it but failed miserably. Still she refused to open her eyes. The mask over her mouth was lifted away and taken off of her head. On instinct she stopped breathing, once before her mask had been removed and she hadn’t been able to breathe, she began to choke as her lungs burned, the pain had terrified her, and she didn’t want a repeat.

“You can breathe, don’t be afraid.” A male voice spoke to her. I am afraid. “Breathe.” His voice was soothing and had a calming effect. She was beginning to feel faint anyway, she gasped as she inhaled, her body jerking, readying herself for the pain that was to come, instead there was nothing. It was like breathing into the mask. Greedily she gasped again and again as she sucked in as much as she possibly could.

“Easy,” the same voice laughed. “The air won’t run out, you’ll pass out if you keep that up.” He spoke next but his words weren’t directed as her. “She seems in good shape,” something pressed against her eyelid and forced it open, with her one eye she stared at the form before her which was blocking out the harsh light. A man hunched before her, his emerald green eyes board into hers, no wrinkles married his face, and he looked to be in his early thirties. He wore a shirt but the sleeves were rolled up to his elbows and a tie was loosely hung about his neck. A very enticing neck, a sudden urge claimed her and before she could register her movements she had the man sprawled on his back on the tile floor. Her hands were caught in his midnight blue tie as she crossed her arms and pulled it tight against his pale skin. The man’s face turned purple from lack of oxygen and spit bubbled out of his lips, which moved in an attempt to speak. What are you doing? Her inner voice raged, but her tight muscles wouldn’t relax. That is until she felt a sting in her arm that appeared after the small tranq dart entered her bicep. Her muscles grew lax within seconds, until she was consciously aware but limp as a rag doll on top of the male beneath her, who now jerked like a fish out of water, and gasped air into his deprived lungs. Once he caught his breath, she was pushed onto the floor beside him. A new face, a puffy face filled with a little too much fat from no doubt one to many burgers, filled the space above her.

“Welcome back, Project A.”
