1966,

I, Lana Adrian hate my mom! She keeps nagging me about some shit about Timothy Rimes and how he cheated on his girl, Deb for me. I laughed at that since Deb’s real name is Delilah and come on man she’s not even pretty and I’m like thirteen. Either way Thomas Himes is cute okay but he’s sixteen! Mom told dad who doesn’t really care. Dad called me to the living room. I got up from my bed and wiped my lip stick off. I was checking if I looked good in pink or red. My dad would never allow this, lipstick. I ran down to dad and threw myself in his arms like a sweet little girl. Dad patted my head. “How are you doing baby?” Daddy asked. I smiled up at him.

“Oh good daddy,” I said. Mom rolled her eyes and pulled me off. She pointed at me.

“David set this girl straight!” I looked at mom. She’s not pretty. I look like my grandmother Rose who was pretty in her days with long brown hair like mine and brown chocolate eyes. Mom looks like Grandpa Bruce with her long stringy black hair and gray eyes. “David!”

“Okay,” Daddy said. He pulled me close. “Lana-Adrian O’Connor who is Timothy Rimes and how do you know him?” I smiled.

“Daddy Timothy is Ally’s older brother. He’s just a friend.” I look at mom. “Mom you’re so overly dramatic.” I pretended to cry. I covered my face and dad hugged me. “Mom how could you believe those girls?” I nearly cried-fake of course but God she was getting to be a huge pain in my butt.

Daddy stared mom down. “Mildred you owe her an apology. She would never do such a thing!” Mom gasped.

“But I just heard it and-“

“Exactly you just heard those stupid rumors!” Daddy yelled holding me closer. I pulled away.

“Well daddy can I go back to bed?” I yawn. “I’m so tired!” Dad smiled at me.

“Yeah Lannie go ahead,” he said allowing me to leave. By the time I reach my room Daddy’s yelling at mom. I sort of saw this coming. Dad always picks me over her. I bet if mom wanted a 50 cent coke and I wanted a billion dollar car he’ll spend everything on me. Mom’s a prick!

I open my diary and began to write.

Diary,

Mom’s being a prick again. She blamed me again for that Rimes thing again. Lucky for me I have daddy!

Love L.A

I walk over to my phone and dialed up Ally. No answer. I groaned and fell on to my bed. Mom came in. She looked look down at me. I looked at her and we exchanged mean looks. “Go to bed.” I smiled.

“Kay but I need to change.” She looked at my shorts.

“Get rid of this skank shorts.” I rolled my eyes and went to my closet.

“Can I dress alone?” She slammed the door. I gave her the finger. I sat next to the phone. It rung loudly and I picked it up quickly before the evil wicked witch of the west came to grab it up. “Hello,” I said.

“Hey,” Ally said back. “Adrian you coming to the lot?” I shake my head no as if she can see me.

“No,” I say. “Mom’s mad.”

“Godzilla mad or Frankenstein smashes mad?”

I laughed at my goof ball friend. “How are about both?”

We laughed at my mom. “Do you two ever get along?”

I sigh. “Only when I’m daisy fresh from those teen magazines she reads.” I kicked a magazine away from me of Debbie Reynolds on it away and picked up a copy of Ava Gardner and looked at pictures of her. “If I care about Debbie Reynolds or whoever the red head chick was?”

“Shirley Temple.” Ally said. I rolled my eyes.

“Yeah that chick, Shirley, something.”  I waved my hands around trying to think. It was strange habit of mine. “I have to go before mom tries to stalk this call.”

“Okay,” Ally said understandingly. “See you at school.”

I smiled. “Okay.” I hanged up and heard mom come close. I changed in to my pajamas and mom came in as I brushed my hair. She stood there for a while. “Hi.”

“Good night and sorry.” She quickly left. I looked at the door and shrug.

Obviously she was angry but Daddy told her to keep it in. I walked to the window and poked my head out to breathe. A black Cadillac sat outside. I looked long and hard at it as if someone will come out by my glare. Then as if it worked someone did come out with two suitcases. He had a hat on. He looked up at me. I was frozen and then smiled at him. He left and went in to a house next to me. I sat on my bed and looked out the second window and saw the lights in the vacant house come on. I guess he’s a new neighbor and watch mom bake well by an apple pie to send over. I lay back down under my covers and opened my photo book and pasted a picture of Ally and I in Cadillac-Thomas’s-Ally was smiling and I was making a kissy face. We both where in shorts cause it was Summer and cut off jean jackets. I had my hair in a ponytail and Ally a bun. Thomas took this photo when school ended captioning it “My girls!”

I laughed at it and placed the book under my bed and turned my lamp light off and went to sleep. Dreaming of birds and other girly shit!
