Smokin’

A Cigarette Sonnet

Despite the scorn of my well-meaning friends,

Who loved you once themselves, but now disdain

Your charm and looks as merely bygone trends

And urge me to abandon you and tame

The wild desire for you that I still feel

Each time my lips approach your ruby heat,

I treasure all the life with you I steal

And count the moments ‘till again we’ll meet.

I cannot leave you now, despite their pleas,

When you persist within my heart and veins;

My love for you is truly my disease,

Your taste upon my tongue my lust sustains.

The warmth and consolation that I crave

Will comfort me until I reach my grave.
