A SAILOR’S STORY

A sailor’s story once was told

To school young seamen, brave and bold,

In the risks and ravages, reefs and shoals

That marriage wreaks upon men’s souls.

“A bean in this pot, me boy,” they’d say,

“A bean in the pot for every day

That you and that lass in the year you’re wed

In bliss depart to your marital bed.

And a bean from the pot, me boy,” they’d say,

“A bean from the pot you take away

for each day in every following year

Sweet love you make to your wife so dear.

And this I promise to you, young friend,

The pot will ne’er be empty again.”
