Summary

Thirty minutes of drinking ensued and by the time we got to the table, it was a jovial albeit sloppy group of 20 for dinner. I had had two wines during the cocktail portion and I planned on at least one more.

I had managed to clear up my schedule, which involved making sure the cat was fed and arrived at Churrascaria (the Brazilian restaurant) at 6:30. I would have arrived sooner but I stopped at my gym to change from work clothes into a tight-fitting black sweater dress and apply some lip gloss.

Jason was at the bar with two of our other brokers, and two of our CSRs who were laughing too loud in part due to the cocktails they were drinking and in part due to trying to impress/flirt with Jason and the other brokers. CSRs don’t make a lot of money and free food and cocktails is always a recipe for over-indulgence at our office. I had never been too crazy about hanging out with the office folks but I was looking forward to tonight.

I approached the group at the bar and announced, “Sorry I’m late but my boss made me work late.”

This joke was well-received judging by the howls from the other brokers and CSRs but Jason just looked at me. “He must be a royal pain,” he answered. “Let me get you a drink and you can tell me all about this bastard. Are you even old enough to drink?”

I ordered a glass of white wine and moved over to stand next to Jason. I clutched his arm and leaned over to whisper to him. “Save me a seat at the table. I hate these outings but I can fill you in on the office dirt at dinner.” I took the wine and went off to mingle.

Thirty minutes of drinking ensued and by the time we got to the table, it was a jovial albeit sloppy group of 20 for dinner. I had had two wines during the cocktail portion and I planned on at least one more. I noticed that Jason had nursed one drink- a martini for the entire time.

Jason had saved a seat next to him at his table but there were 20 of us around the table and it did not look like a good set-up for flirtations nor for seduction. As we took our seats, Jason leaned over to me and said so that only I could hear, “I used to work in this building on the top floor. The conference room looks right into the harbor and the tug boats shuttle the oil tankers in and out of the bay at all hours. It’s quite extraordinary.”

“I’d like to see it,” I replied nonchalantly.

“It’s your lucky day,” he responded. “I know the pass code and I still have a key to the office. After dinner, I can take you up there. I think it’s the nicest office space in the whole city.”

“It’s a plan,” I said. “What girl doesn’t want to go breaking and entering into a securities office with her boss?” I smiled at him.

“Technically, I have the key, so it’s not really breaking and entering,” he answered. “But, let’s see if we can get into some other kinds of trouble while we’re up there.”

I would be looking forward to that.
