I was the unofficial caretaker of the crew of Elliot Industrial Inc., they traveled around the country working 12 hours shifts installing fiber optics underground. Most were bachelors with no chance of settling down anytime soon. My brother, Jack Donovan, was one of them. He was also the only family I had left on the planet, so when he started this job four years ago and I was a freshly graduated 18 year old female with no idea how to live on my own. Jack insisted that I go with him for the summer before I started college.

It wasn’t long before I became the resident housekeeper, the apartments that the guys were put up in were usually shared, they were all paid per diem and to save money they would find room mates. They weren’t always in the same complexes but they weren’t usually very far apart. I made money cleaning apartments, washing laundry and occasionally cooking meals. All things I learned to do after our parents passed and my brother became my legal guardian when I was fourteen.

After that first summer I went away to college for two semesters and then started taking my classes online and moved back in with my brother. I preferred this arrangement over college life. I didn’t mind college life so much but I wasn’t a social person and often found myself alone. I wanted to be near my family and Jack was all I had.

Online classes allowed me to travel with Jack and even make money continuing as the resident ‘wife’. That’s how all the guys referred to me. I was one semester away from finishing my bachelors degree with a finance major. It wouldn’t be long before I started looking for a job but to be honest the idea wasn’t as appealing as it once seemed. I liked the traveling and a job would limit me from traveling and possibly take me too far away from Jack.

I hadn’t put much thought into settling down with anyone, the only guys I knew worked for the same company as my brother. When your older brother is their supervisor, they were well aware that I was off limits. My brother was overprotective. If I wanted anything to do with any of these guys it had to be away from his prying eyes and the only ones that were willing to risk it were usually the ones that weren’t going to work out anyway so sex was about the most I got out of the relationship.

So how did I finally meet the guy that caught my eye and set my world on fire? He happened to be the one guy that wasn’t afraid of my older brother, he was Cooper Elliot, Jack’s boss. Cooper was the son of the owner of the Elliot Industrial. In the last four years I had seen Cooper on many occasions, he was the same age as my brother and he had worked alongside the guys as well as worked as operations manager and I can only assume his father expects him to take over the whole company at some point.

I can’t describe Cooper to you without sounding like a love struck teenage girl with a crush on a famous rock star but I’ll try. Cooper was hot, anytime I saw him I tingled, yes, tingled. I was instantly nervous around him, which was an embarrassment at first. I was always tripping or dropping stuff. It took several years before I could maintain my cool around him. I was too quiet and shy to say anything to him and he never bothered to say more than a few words to me. He wasn’t rude, quite the opposite, very friendly and polite and even sweet to me on occasion, he was helpful if he saw I needed it and treated me much the same way Jack treated me: like a little sister. I hated that part. I wanted him to reciprocate the crush I had but that never happened.

If you saw the women he hung out with and compared me next to them you would understand why. I was an average five foot three. I was definitely pear shaped and not much too look at, brown eyes, equally brown hair, that I could never keep in line so it was always up in a bun, which always made my ears stick out. I wasn’t anything like the women Cooper went through, they had flowing blonde hair, perfectly manicured nails, mine were lucky if they got clipped straight. His women were always perfectly kept with expensive makeup to doll up their already perfect faces. There wasn’t enough makeup on the planet to cover my freckles so why bother trying. Makeup for me was eyeliner, mascara and maybe some blush. It didn’t matter, if there was anyone to impress, my brother probably wouldn’t have allowed it. He only knew the guys he worked with and he knew what kind of men they were. I think he was looking forward to me finding a normal job and hopefully a normal guy once my classes were over.

Cooper wasn’t always on site. When he did show up to the site being worked the whole crew knew to make sure everything was in order, not that it wasn’t to begin with, Jack took his job seriously and never worried about a visit from Cooper. They were a lot alike, both driven and usually strived for perfection. They were also pretty close and almost always hung out after work, a fact that only heightened my crush on Cooper, seeing him often when he was at the site only fueled my desire to be with him. I wasn't one to flirt, I didn't really know how so trying to let him know I was interested wasn't something I could do. I did enjoy his visits though, he was a fun guy and always made me feel like part of the group and not just a side kick to one of the crew.

I listened as the crew sat in our living room and talked about the upcoming visit with Cooper. He would be in late tonight and on site tomorrow. I looked forward to seeing him again, he was something to look at, not that these other guys weren’t, a guy couldn’t work in this field if he wasn’t built for it but looking at Cooper always felt different. My body warmed at the thought of him. I went to bed that night looking forward the next evening, they would all be hanging out and probably go to a bar, if so, I would be tagging along just to stare at Cooper and it wouldn’t hurt to dance and relax a little.
