Summary

Carmen's story is one of three that tie together. This is the first one and my goal is to post all three as they are happening in relativity to each other. I hope I can keep up with you. Update: The chapters do not line up as I had hoped in an effort to not repeat the same things in all three stories and I have found that its a little more difficult to keep the stories varied in some chapters but in order to make each story readable as a separate story I occasionally had to put the same chapter in more than one story. I apologize for any confusion and hope that you can see past this flaw until i figure out how to deviate.

Chapter1 (v.1) - Clockwork

Author Chapter Note

Carmen’s story is one of three that tie together. I originally posted three stories together, TAREN IT UP, CARMENS STORY AND NICKS STORY, I hope that they will read separately as well. Its a lot of the same story with three different points of view so if you read one completely through you will find similarities in the events but hopefully enough of each persons point of view to make them unique. After CARMENS STORY and NICKS STORY, there is a follow up story for Nick and Carmen called FIGHT OR FLIGHT. I hope you enjoy all three stories.

Carmen sat at her desk Friday afternoon. It was two o'clock which meant her boss would be stopping by her desk to announce that he was done for the day. She had worked for Nick Rissen for two years and every Friday was the same. It had never changed.

She wasn't sure what he did and none of the other assistants in the building knew either. The stories passed around, as office gossip, would range from weekends with a family in another town to spending weekends fulfilling an adrenaline high by skydiving and mountain climbing.

He was a very private person. She respected that privacy and in turn he respected hers. He didn't ask questions and she didn't have to face scrutiny or try to explain anything. This was the best job ever.

Nick was a very well built man from what you could see. His tall figure always sported a suit and tie and on the rare occasion his sleeves were short and his jacket off you didn't miss the well built biceps that hinted at the fact the rest of his body would match in size.  His head was covered in dark hair and he was always clean shaven with boyish smile that never faded and always visible laugh lines.

He wasn't married and never spoke of a girlfriend. Carmen was confident he had a girlfriend in his home town of Jennings but he never really confirmed that fact with anyone.

It didn't stop the ladies on the floor from trying to be the woman in his life but he was always immune. Never flirted back.

Carmen wasn't interested. That's a lie. She was very interested but she had no future as a wife. Not the kind that real men dream of anyway. She knew that she had to be off limits. She couldn't start a relationship and fall in love to get rejected when the truth came out. And you can't start with the truth because that rejection hurt just as much the first day of a relationship as it would on the hundredth day.

“Carmen. I'm done for the day.” Like clockwork. She smiled up at him. Most men were at least a foot taller than Carmens petite 4’10”, Nick however went a bit higher and always towered above her at 6’3”.

“See you Monday Nick.”

He smiled down at her. A perfect set of teeth between those perfect lips and a jaw line that could only be defined as sharp and distinct. Perfect.

He looked down at his phone buzzing in his hand. She watched as he brought it to his ear. “Mom. Did she answer?... No. It's okay. She's in there. She's just ignoring me again….I'm on my way.” He waved at Carmen as he walked away.

Carmen thought about what she heard. Who's in where ignoring him? She pondered momentarily as she looked in her drawer for one of her favorite chocolates. This was the one place she could eat her candy and it wasn’t magically disappearing. At home her son and her brothers managed to find any secret stash she had hidden. She was usually lucky to get one piece out of the bag. It was nice to have a hiding spot they couldn’t get to.

Carmen drove home in her Enclave, a ride provided by her ex husbands parents. More like a bribe or maybe just guilt. Whatever the reason she didn't turn it down. She tried at first, determined to survive without them, but she failed miserably.

The Richards had thrown their only son out, cut him off, hoping he would grow up. It back fired and now their son was in prison and they used their money to support Carmen and Thomas.

Carmen wasn't foolish enough to believe they cared about her. They only cared about their only grandchild. She benefited from their guilt and it took a while to come to terms with it but she had accepted their help for many years. Things had changed over the years and now the Richards had less guilt and more resentment. Going out on her own had been important. Getting out from under the Richards was one step closer to becoming a normal human being.

She worked hard to gain normal human being status. It had been almost ten years since she lost her ability to function and the last six had been more productive then the first three.

On Monday morning Carmen greeted Nick as he walked past his desk. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” He greeted right back. “What are we doing to day?”

She picked up two files and handed them to Nick. He opened the first one and looked over the numbers before he closed it to look at the second one.

She watched as he browsed the files taking in his perfect features and wondering what it was that he did all weekend.  She mentally shook her head. No point in trying to figure out that enigma. It was probably way more interesting than cleaning her car and watching Netflix.

“I'm going to need to see Tracy on this one.” He stated looking down at her.

“Okay. I'll see when she's available. You have sales at four today.”

“Always so late.” He stated annoyed. He didn't like the late meetings.

Carmen smiled. “Sorry. I did keep you open from two till four.” She knew he usually ate a late lunch.

“Thanks.”

“There's coffee on your desk.”

“Okay. Thanks.” He picked up the files and headed for his desk.

Carmen sat at her desk typing she looked up when she saw Molly walking her way. Molly was an assistant for Eric, one of four lawyers that took up half the floor with their offices. Each one had an assistant and all four assistants could see each other in the space they shared between the four offices. They had the feeling of privacy between them due to the fact the four offices faced each other. Two on one side and two on the other creating their own private corridor.

Molly and Carmen sat across from each other in the past year they both have seen the other two lawyers go through numerous assistants usually temp workers.

Lucas, the lawyer next to Nick's office did not appear very productive. He was much older and had been here before any of the other lawyers. He was also an alcoholic.

He hid it well but Carmen couldn't be fooled. She had lived with Evan, her ex husband, long enough to know the signs. Smelling of alcohol as it seeped through your skin even though he took a shower that morning. And by noon the smell of fresh alcohol on his breath.

Lucas scared her the most. She avoided him as much as possible. He was quiet and kept to himself for the most part but he also went through the most assistants. Each one complained that he was rude and hard to work with.

Across his office was the fourth lawyer, Jonathan, with his assistant Janice. Jonathan was a young lawyer who had started in this firm as an intern and stayed on after being offered a job.

All four lawyers had the same mission. Clean up contracts that were up for renewal and draft new ones after the sales floor acquired them.

Molly a tall skinny blonde who flirted with almost anyone had become a friend at work. Carmen still reserved so much personal information about her past but she had confided the good parts of her life with Molly.

Molly leaned over her desk after Nick had disappeared to accounting. “Hey. Lets do lunch downstairs. I need to get away from my desk.”

The cafeteria in the building was a safe enough place for Carmen. “Sure.” She agreed. She always brought her lunch but on the rare occasion that Molly insisted on lunch downstairs she always agreed. It was the only time she agreed. If Molly suggested any where else Carmen used the ‘I brought my lunch’ excuse to avoid leaving the building.

Molly looked into Nick's window. “What's our hunk up to today?”

She always asked like they might share an interest in Nick. Molly had tried on more than one occasion to flirt with Nick or get his attention. He was a pro at deflecting her. He wasn't interested. “Working. He's in accounting.”

“I noticed he pulled up in a car today. Do you think he finally got rid of that old truck?”

Carmen shrugged a shoulder. “I couldn't tell you. He doesn't tell me about his car situation.”

“He doesn't tell any one anything about any situation.”

Carmen smiled. She didn't blame him. Besides the four in this little corridor the other half of the floor is full of interns and temps that have nothing better to do but talk about everyone else's lives.
