PREFACE

The thing about dying is you never really own up to until it’s really happening to you.

No one likes to think about it – dying, I mean, but it happens. It can’t be avoided. And I can honestly say that it isn’t the best experience to have to go through. You can’t really breathe, everything’s fuzzy around the edges and you hearing starts fading till you can only hear the weak, wrecked beating of your heart.

 Dying sucks.

But I can’t say I really regret coming to this moment in my short, and previously uneventful life. Even with my eyes closed I could feel his fingers pressed against the nape of my neck, cradling it. He was warm, a scorch of heat that balanced with the coolness of my skin. In the background, progressively growing lost in the din of my own heartbeat, was the sound of a battle still raging.

It made me sad, I suppose, to go down like this but, like I said, I don’t regret it.

I don’t regret falling into the line of fire for him.

I don’t regret giving everything I had for him.

I could never regret the day he walked into my life.

That’s the thing about love, I guess; it makes you do stupid things you would have never fathomed to do for someone who was practically a stranger before. But if it’s for the one you love, for that one person out of the rest who could bring hope into your heart with just a smile, then, well dying isn’t something to mourn over.

With each breath that left my lips, with each kiss he placed to me cheek as he whispered into my ear, I couldn’t help but to think that all-in-all it was worth this moment. Then the darkness came, a cloak of black as warm and comforting as his touch, and I saw no reason to fight against it. So I went.
