“Ellora Izabella Bishwena! If you don’t come down here, we’re going to be late!” Lindsay Elensue, my best friend, called from downstairs. “Coming!” I called back. I took one final look at myself in the mirror. I had a blood-red, floor-length, off-the-shoulder strapless dress on, the skirt of it hitting my black stilettos. My coppery hair fell down my shoulders in loose waves. I took a deep breath and headed downstairs. “Well, it’s about time! We don’t have all night, you know.” Lindsay grumbled. “Yeah, I know. Are you ready to go Mom?” Jocyelen came out of the living room, keys jingling in her hands. “Ready when you are baby.” I nodded and we piled into the car. “Have fun girls! I’ll pick you up around twelve thirty!” Jocyelen drawled in her Texan accent. “Thanks Mom!” Lindsay and I yelled as she sped off. Jocyelen wasn’t Lindsay’s actual mom, but she and I had been best friends since first grade, so she was pretty much adopted into the family along with Scott. “Hey, maybe you’ll get to dance with Jack tonight,” Lindsay teased, her blue eyes dancing. I followed her gaze to where Jack Ericson and Nick Arlow were walking into the high school. I sneered at her. “Yeah, and maybe you’ll finally talk to Nick.” She glared at me. “Hey now, let’s not get our hopes up.” Scott Manderson came up behind us, wrapping his arms around our waists. “Care to escort a lonely guy to prom?” He winked at me. Scott had been acting really weird lately. Ever since sophomore year, he’d been more flirtatious with me. Lindsay and I just rolled our eyes and each took an arm. “So how are you two beautiful girls doing today?” He was referring to both Lindsay and I, but kept his eyes on me when we walked. I’d always been closer with Scott than Lindsay had. “Fine.” Lindsay mumbled. I knew she was still thinking about Nick. “You know Lindz, I think you and Arlow would make quite a cute couple.” I offered. She looked at me skeptically. “No, I think she’s right. You just need that little push.” We’d reached the edge of the dance floor where Jack and Nick had paused to talk to Ambertia, Lindsay’s sister. Scott then pushed Lindsay right into Nick sending her flying into his arms. Thankfully, he caught her just in time. They stood there for a moment before Nick let her go. I grew frustrated at their shyness and decided to take matters into my own hands. “Okay, no.” I half yelled. Everybody in the group looked at me in shock. “You,” I pointed at Nick. “Need to take control. And YOU,” I said to Lindsay. “Need to let him. We ALL know you like each other so, why put it off any longer? Now, go dance, the both of you!” Nick and Lindsay stood there for another moment before Nick offered his hand to the shocked-into-oblivion Lindsay. She took it and they started swaying slowly to the upbeat music. “Well, it’s about damn time. What?” Jack was staring at me with a mixture of awe, fear, and something else I couldn’t quite decipher. “Nothing, I just- wow.” “Wow what?” Scott started to move away slowly. “Scott Kyle Manderson, don’t you dare move.” He froze, a small smile on his face. Jack stumbled “Well, you- um taking control like that- I mean that was pretty hot.” I was taken aback. “Oh, well um th-th-thank y-you.” I blushed. Scott had started to make conversation with Ambertia, so it was Jack and I on our own, standing awkwardly by the dance floor. “So, are you always that-” “Bitchy? No. I just got frustrated with them. I usually like the guy to be straightforward.” Oh hell! Why did I just say that? My head fell to my feet. “Oh, well- um in that case, do you want to dance?” My head snapped up. Did my ears just fail me, or did the guy of my dreams just ask me to dance? “Yeah, sure.” I smiled and took his offered hand. The song was slow, a nice steady pace for this kind of dancing. Jack and I had been flirting for years, but had never actually done anything like this. I put my arms around his neck, while his wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer than I thought he would. My heart skipped a beat. After a few moments of dancing he spoke. “Hey Elle?” He bent his head down to look at me. “Yeah?” “Can I try something?” My heart stopped. I simply nodded, not trusting words. He took one hand from my waist and pulled my face up towards his. I stretched up on my tip-toes as his lips landed to mine. I felt a thousand things go off in my mind. Pushing them all back I focused on how unreal it was to be kissing my perfect guy. His black hair fell onto my forehead, brushing lightly between us. His lips moved, soft and warm, against mine. All my nervousness and insecurities bled away into this one feeling. I knew then and there that Jack was meant to be with me, forever. I was his and he was mine. There was no splitting us up, not for the world. I pulled away, taking a breath. “Wow.” He said, a huge grin plastered on his face. We were still swaying to the music, his arms squeezed gently around me. “Yeah, wow.” My smile matched his. “So, what does this mean?” I asked cautiously. “Does everything change?” He shook his head and held me closer. “I don’t know. The only thing I know for certain right now, is that I just want to stay with you in this moment forever. Forever and ever.” Jack sang softly. I lay my head on his chest, feeling more content than I ever had. “I don’t want to close my eyes. I don’t want to fall asleep ‘cause I’d miss you babe, and I don’t want to miss a thing.” I suddenly realized the song was I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith. “This is our song, Elle.” I smiled and kissed him, letting the music drift around us. This was my new favorite song. It was our song. “So beautiful.” Jack held my face in one hand and was staring down at me in awe and wonder. “How is it you’re all mine?” “I don’t know Jack. But I’ll always be yours.” The song ended on a sweet note. “Hey you two lovebirds, let’s get something to drink! I’m dying over here!” Lindsay called, Nicks arm around her waist. She looked at him happily. Jack took my hand as we walked to our table. Scott and Ambertia were already there chatting happily away, drinks already set on the table. I sat down between Scott and Jack. Ambertia was flirting shamelessly with Scott when Rebecca, the snobby slut of the school came over. “Hey Scott, do you want to dance?” She dragged her fake nails over his chest. “Um, no thanks Rebecca. I was actually just about to dance with Ambertia.” Scott removed her hand from his body and grabbed Ambertia’s. Scott was the only one who ever called Ambertia by her full name. Everyone else called her Berti, even the teachers. “Aw, come on. Just one dance. It’ll be fun.” I could see Berti’s face falling; she was no match for Rebecca. I’d had enough of this. I stood up. “Listen Rebecca, nobody here wants to dance with you. Why don’t you just go find one of your loyal man-slut football players to drool over?” She looked at me like I was a bug that needed to be crushed quickly. “Nobody asked you, Laura.” She turned back to Scott. She’d never gotten my name right, even though I’d known her my whole life. “I don’t care. Scott said no so drop it you deep-fried Barbie doll.” Her eyes gleamed. Shit, this is what she wanted, why she came over here. She wanted a fight. Well, if she wanted a fight, that’s what she was going to get. “And what will you do if I don’t? I mean look at you! Your daddy’s dead-” I suddenly slapped her. “Don’t ever talk about my dad bitch. You have no idea what I’m capable of. Stay the hell away from Scott and Jack and my family or I will end you. I went to sit down but added: “Oh, and its Ellora. Get it right.” She stalked off, holding her face. She wouldn’t tell anyone what had happened. I knew that much. I sat down in a huff. All eyes at the table were on me. “What?” I asked. “Damn Elle, that was- that was something else.” Scott chuckled. “What? That dumbass blond slut deserved it. Nobody talks about my family and gets away with it.” It was true. Any time someone besides those closest to me talked about my dad, I would react violently. Then I heard Lindsay whisper to Nick: “Her dad was a marine and was killed when she was four. Suicide bomber. She never really got over it.” I sighed at the terrible memory of my father’s funeral. No. I thought. I will not let this ruin my night. “Will you guys stop staring at me and go dance?” I laughed half-heartedly at Scott and Bertie. They shook their heads, clearing them, rose and walked to the dance floor. Jack grabbed my hand and squeezed it reassuringly. I kissed him and instantly felt safe and wonderful. His other hand found my face and brought it closer to his, deepening the kiss. “I love you Ellora. I have since I first saw you in Mrs. Shelly’s class in kindergarten.” I smiled against his lips, remembering the first time I ever saw him. I thought he was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen, although I was young and didn’t know what I was thinking. I remember drawing our names in hearts in first grade. I still couldn’t believe this incredible person was mine. “I love you too.” I whispered. Many people would think we were taking things too fast. Yesterday, I would’ve agreed with them; but not today. Today, I’m in love with the most handsome, wonderful, sweet, loving guy in the world. He’s mine and I’m his. His eyes bore into mine. “Now, they look into each other’s eyes and the world will fall away to nothing! Only their love will exist in their world!” Lindsay cried, laughing dramatically and towing Nick to the dance floor. I simply ignored her. Nothing could ruin this moment. “Hey Ellora,” Except that. I turned around. John Kendra was sitting beside me. John had been practically in love with me since kindergarten. I wanted nothing to do with him. It’s not that I’m stuck up; I just didn’t see him that way. He’d always been really creepy to me. “What do you want, John?” Jack demanded wrapping his arm around me. John ignored him and continued talking to me. “Want to dance Elle?” I sighed, deeply annoyed. “John, I’m kind of busy here. I’m here with Jack, in case you didn’t notice.” “I don’t think one dance could hurt, could it? I promise I won’t get too rough with you.” He dared put his hand on my leg. “I jumped up slapping his hand away. “Don’t you dare touch me! I’m not dancing with you. I’m not doing anything with you John, EVER. So stop asking. You just want me because you CAN”T HAVE ME. Now, leave me the HELL ALONE!” I sat down next to Jack again. John must have really had a mental issue because he grabbed my wrist and dragged me up. Jack was up in a flash, in John’s face. “Take your filthy hands off her!” He ripped my wrist out of John’s grasp. “If you touch her again, you’ll have me to deal with.” John and Jack were nose to nose. My heart was beating in my chest. I couldn’t stand it if Jack got hurt. I mean he was a good fighter, I’d seen him fight before, but I wouldn’t stand for it. All of a sudden Scott was behind John, holding him in some sort of head lock. I got in Scott’s face. “Now that’s enough. Scott, let him go.” He didn’t. “Scott! Let him go. NOW.” Scott released him and John started coughing. “There’s been more than enough drama to last us the night and I don’t really think either of you want to get kicked out. Am I right?” We were all breathing heavy, but the boys agreed. “John, I’m not dancing with you. I’m here with Jack and that’s where I’m going to stay. Got it?” “You’ll pay for this one day. You’ll love me. I’ll make sure of that.” He spun around and walked away. “Are you OK Elle?” Scott was inching towards where he left Bertie on the dance floor. I nodded and waved at him to go. Jack held me in his arms. “Too much crap to deal with in one night.” I sighed. He laughed humorlessly and hugged me tighter. “You’re safe as long as you’re here Elle. I’ll never let anything happen to you as long as you’re here.” I wrapped my arms tighter around him. “Never let go?” He pulled my mouth up to his. “Never, baby. Never.” “While, I hate to break up this little love-fest, you two need to leave some space between you.” Mr. Vinyl, our Vice Principal, interrupted us. He looked at my body, his eyes scraping over my chest and legs. I shifted uncomfortably next to Jack. “Is that all?” Jack snapped but still maintained some respect in his voice. “No. Ellora, I need to see you in my office please.” My heart dropped. “What’s this about?” I asked impatiently. “Please.” Mr. Vinyl held out a hand in the direction of his office. I kissed Jack one more time before he whispered in my ear. “If you don’t come out within five minutes, I’m coming in there. I’ll be waiting right here.” I nodded. Everybody knew Mr. Vinyl was a pervert, however nobody would tell. He had a lot of power in the school and no one would dare defy him. I walked quietly into the deserted main office. Everyone had gone home for the night, or was at the dance. I entered Mr. Vinyl’s office, the creepy administrator behind me. He closed the door and I whipped around to face him. “What’s this about exactly?” I demanded. He lurched towards me, grabbed my shoulders and pushed me against the wall. “What are you doing?” I tried to push him off me, but he was so strong. “You like it rough?” His breath was sour with alcohol on my face. “I can be rough.” He ground against me as his hands traveled down to my wrists and forced them above me. Holding both of my hands in one of his he reached up my dress and started to touch me. “GET OFF!” I screamed at him and kicked my legs in an upward position. Mr. Vinyl wrenched my legs apart and slipped between them, lifting me up as he did so. His free hand quickly undid his pants. I screamed again and cracked my head with his. It did nothing. He simply laughed as he pulled down his boxers. Suddenly, the door flew open and Mr. Vinyl flew off me. I slammed into the ground hard. I saw Mr. Vinyl lying limply on the floor, Nick holding Jack back from killing him. Lindsay ran over to me. “Oh my God! Ellora, are you okay?” Lindsay hugged me to her, worried beyond belief. I couldn’t breathe. I could vaguely hear Lindsay calling my name, then calling Jack. Darkness was fighting to overcome me. He knelt down beside me, a look of complete worry on his face, masking the burning anger. My head lolled to the side as I fell into the darkness. I didn't dream, but if I had, they would've been of him.
