Sunshine’s Cowboy

Chapter 1

A small golden haired child with the eyes the color of bluebells could often been seen running through the country fields playing with wild animals in the area or following on the heels of an old trapper named Gunner.

Gunner was an old man the size of a full grown grizzly with a temper to match; anyone that had to deal with him didn’t dare to get him riled. Only one person held his heart in her tiny hand and that was his neighbor’s gal, Sunshine. Her Ma died in child birth and her Pa was left to raise her on his own.

She was as bright as her namesake and was like the daughter he never had. She brightens his twilight years with just a smile or her soft laughter as she would follow him around everywhere from the time the sun come up till almost the time it went down.

He taught her everything he knew, passing his wisdom down to her that she soaked up every word. She had a way with animals both wild and tame; she knew the names and uses of plants and learned everything she would ever need to know to survive in the wild if she ever had to.

Gunner passed away when she was in her teens and Sunshine took it really hard she would still leave the house as the sun came up and wouldn’t be back till almost nightfall for about a week. She would spend that time in a cave that Gunner had taken her to when she was small. Gunner had left all his things to her, what few there was. She had taken them to their cave. She could still feel close to him and often found herself talking to him as if he was still with her.

Now her Pa had worked in town and that is where he met Thomas Esquire who was new in the territory moving here from back East. A dapper looking feller that took a liking to Sunshine on one of the visits into town she made to bring her pa lunch and to pick up supplies.

Thomas started spending more and more time with her Pa and asked if he could court the beauty. Thomas acted the true gentleman and lavished her with small tokens of love trying to win her heart. One summer night he asked her Pa for her hand in marriage. They would get married as soon as she turned 18. Thomas had said he had already bought a piece of land and was having a house built for her. Until then she would live with her Pa.

A week before her birthday her Pa got real sick and told her that she would be a wealthy woman. He had known he was dying and he had deeded the land and everything to her and her spouse when he passed.

He told her with his dying breath, he knew she would be in good hands and that he loved her with all his heart. Sunshine kissed his cheek and dashed out the back of the house with tears blinding her and grief breaking her heart.

The next few days she was kept busy with the arrangements to lay her Pa to rest next to her Ma in the small cemetery in town. She greeted the many who came to pay their respects. Her Pa was a well-loved man.

Thomas stayed by her side playing the loving fiancé to all who looked their way. Sunshine stood in a daze, just wanted it to all be over. The crush of bodies and her grief was smothering her and all she wanted was to go home.
