Arethusa, The Realm of Nymphs

Adair groaned as he awoke and found himself lying face down on the cold marble floor. He strained to open his eyes, pain overwhelming his body. He felt exhausted and sick. Defeated. His vision blurred as he tried to focus on his surroundings. He grimaced, even without his sight, he could smell the distinct and constricting scent of smoke as it enveloped the room.

What happened?

He tried to raise himself up but pain flooded his body and he collapsed with an agonizing gasp. Adair turned his head as he blinked rapidly trying to clear the fog from his head and after what seemed like an eternity, his vision began to focus and he saw her.

 Abrielle.

She stood in the middle of the room surrounded by the white-hot flames engulfing the room. She was laughing hysterically as she played among the blaze. Caressing the fire as if it were a lover in the flesh.

Adair tried once again to push himself up from the floor. This time, he was more than prepared for the pain and pushed through it. Once on his feet he winced as his body tried to buckle beneath his weight. He steadied himself, and for the first time noticed the blood on his hands and clothing. He shook his head, he could worry about himself later, right now he needed to check on Abrielle.

He approached her playful form cautiously; her demeanor was... unsettling. She seemed oblivious to him as she danced among the blaze, the flames spiraling around her supple body as she moved. Her laughter continued as Adair steadily approached her with concern, "Abrielle? Are you all right?"

Her movements and laughter stopped abruptly as she craned her head to the side. Her eyes narrowed curiously, "You're still alive?"

Adair's eyes widened, shock filling his voice, "What?"

She turned towards him slowly, violently gripping a bloodied ceremonial knife in her hand. Adair watched as fresh blood dripped from the blade onto the floor as she moved. His hand rose to cover his mouth as he looked upon her dark form within the flames. Her golden dress was saturated with blood and it shone sickeningly in the light of the blaze. A tear slid down his cheek as he looked at her mangled and distended abdomen, "Abrielle... how could you?"

She paused and suddenly began to cackle at him, "How could I? You are nothing to me Rejarnihe. You never were. You are not the one I truly want but you are the one that must pay."

She licked her lips as she eyed him manically, her eyes turning red as she bared her now razor like teeth. Blood dripped from her mouth as her teeth cut into her lips, "Behold, Rejarnihe! I am Fenrir, destroyer of all. Most powerful of Siren souls and I will devour yours..."

Adair sat up with a start as he jerked out his nightmare and found himself alone in his bed. He was drenched in sweat and his head throbbed from the intensity of the nightmare that plagued him relentlessly. Unconsciously, he ran his hand over his chest, lightly touching the scars that resided there.

He rose slowly and sat on the edge of his bed, breathing hard as he lightly grabbed at his hair. Once he had calmed his breathing, he rose from the bed, letting the ice blue sheet fall to the floor beneath him. The cool air from the open balcony doors caressed his naked flesh as he made his way outside.

Adair sighed as he leaned against the stone railing of the balcony and looked out at the world before him; Arethusa was truly a wondrous land. He gazed down at the golden beach below him and watched as the cerulean waves rippled along the coast. It was a calm and misty night but one could still make out the small mountains of rocks on the beach.

Off in the distance the cosmic sky shone brightly even through the vast fog. Adair could see various shades of blue swirling within each other as he watched the heavens idly. Stars filled the sapphire sky, some areas so heavy with them they appeared silver. He could just make out the serene snow-covered mountains in the distance, just across the gentle sea. The mountains seemed to glow in the light of moon, tempting him with the promise of solitude and beauty.

It was tranquil and even magical to an extent. Such a sight could cure all aliments for some, but it did nothing to ease the raging turmoil within Adair.

Nothing did.

The memory of Abrielle's intense hatred and betrayal had taken root deep within his mind, cursing him with constant nightmares. He could never forget her, no matter how hard he tried. Alas, there was no spell or incantation powerful enough to erase her memory from his ravaged mind...

Adair scoffed as he headed back to his bed; even if he had found a way to obliterate her from his mind, he wouldn't. Truly, he deserved to be punished with the memory of her betrayal. For he knew, deep in his heart, that he was nothing but an abomination and a fool... and love was nothing but a plague upon the world.
