Preface-

One year ago- “Thank you for coming today Mr. White we appreciate working with you.” Says an employee of W.A.D. “It was my pleasure, if you don’t mind could you show me where the cafeteria is?” I kindly ask. “Of course, here at W.A.D we have two floors with a cafeteria, free gym, and spa. There is one on the sixth floor and another on the fifteenth floor.” He explains. We ride the elevator up a flight and he leads me to the cafeteria stopping at the entrance. “Have a good rest of your afternoon Mr. White.” He says. “Thank you, you too.” I respond. He turns around and leaves me at the open entrance. I walk into the cafeteria in awe with the architecture structure and design. I buy a simple salad with French dressing and a bottle of water. I walk to an empty table and set my tray down and take another glance around the room. My eyes stop on the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on and I knew in an instant that I had fallen in love. It’s funny how I had never thought it could happen to me but here I am not able to look away from her. She exuded a cold aura yet when she smiled toward the elderly gentlemen in front of her I could see her sadness, loneliness and suffering in her eyes. I tear my eyes away from her and focus on eating my salad so I could catch her after. I eat my salad as humanly possible and dump my scraps away stacking my tray on top of the others. I turn back to look for the woman but she was no longer there only the old man. He sees me staring and smiles at me, I smile back and walk back to my table to grab my bag. I see the man walk towards me and I stop in my tracks wondering what he wanted. “Can I have a word with you young man?” He asks with a grin. Confused and not sure what to do I follow him into an office and sit across from him in a chair. “I saw you staring earlier mind I ask who you are?” He says. I smile and tell him my name, “I’m Hal White sir, I’m an architect at the sister company of W.A.D.” His eyes brighten up at my explanation and smiles. I immediately like him and make myself more comfortable setting my bag down on the floor and relax my tense body. “Really, I’m proud to see that our sister company has such a dashing employee.” He chuckles. I look at him in surprise curious to know who he was. “Sir, might you be Mr. Winters of the W.A.D.” I ask politely. “I am but today I am not the CEO, I am merely a grandpa.” He explains. “I saw you looking earlier and noticed that you were mesmerized by something or should I say someone.” He asks with a sly grin. “That woman you were with earlier?” I say but was interrupted. “You are talking about Amelia.” He says. My heart contracts at hearing her name it matched her perfectly. “Amelia” I try her name on my lips and a smile splits my face. “Yes, quite a beauty is she not. She looks just like her grandmother when she was young.” He says. “Your granddaughter?” I ask and he nods in agreement. “She used to laugh a lot, cry every day, and smile from the bottom of her heart. Now she only shows me a smile once in a while, she guards her heart so tightly nowadays too afraid to let anyone in.” He explains. “Judging from the look I saw earlier on your face you must have fallen for her charms.” He laughs. I chuckle at his insight and tell him the truth, “Today was the first time I’ve seen her but I fell for her at first sight.” “What do you think of her?” He asks curiously. “She exudes an aura of ice and fire and her smile is not a smile of happiness and content but one of loneliness and suffering.” I say with sadness. “I’ll make you a deal.” He offers. “About what?” I ask. “At W.A.D I made very strict and no nonsense rules. It consists of no stealing, no current underground or illegal involvement, and no relationships at work.” He says. I look at him curiously what he would offer. “If you fell for Amelia at first sight I hope you will try to pursue her and give her happiness.” He says. “How do you know I’ll make her happy?” I ask. “She doesn’t know it yet but you are the type she can’t stay away from, not to mention that you are easy on the eyes.” He laughs. “When I saw you I immediately knew what kind of guy you were. You are determined, goal orientated, a hard worker but you also have the charm, easy going nature and kind hearted. I believe that you could soften her hard edges and maybe before I leave I will be able to see her laugh wholeheartedly again.” He says. “Anyways the deal is, if you can make Amelia fall in love with you and bring back her happiness then I will retract the company rule of no relationships.” “But I don’t even work at W.A.D what would be the point.” I ask. “The company does not know it yet, but when I retire as C.E.O the C.O.O will be retiring shortly after me. We had decided to let the next generation take over the company and see where they will lead W.A.D. Therefore, we will be needing a new C.O.O and I hope you won’t let the opportunities pass you by.” He explains. “If I take this deal and is able to get Amelia to fall in love with me would she not be mad at such an agreement when she finds out?” I say. He nods his head and explains, “Although Amelia may seem cold and distant it is only because she is too afraid of her feelings but behind her exterior she is still the same girl my wife and I raised. She loves to play jokes and pranks and she never turns down a challenge because her pride and ego is too high. When she hears of this she will be understanding because that is the kind of girl she was raised to be, to not only judge and look at her perspective but to also look from others. If she is still the same girl, then I know that she will forgive you because by then she will be too afraid to let you go and be alone again.” He says with certainty. “Why are you trusting me with so much? How do you know I won’t just leave or misuse her after I made her fall in love with me?” I ask. “Because the moment I saw you looking at her I knew that you were the one for her and that if I let you get away then she will never be happy. I also knew that no one will ever look at her the way you do, when you saw her you didn’t know who she was but you still fell for her. After you learned that she was the granddaughter and next successor of W.A.D. I realized that you didn’t have bad intentions to take the company or anything from her. You only wanted the woman she was, not the things she had or would inherit. In her life everyone she meets has a motive or goal, either money or connections and she has been hurt so many times because of these motives.” He says with sad eyes. “I hope you won’t give up on her, it will take determination to crack her up but once you do I believe you will find a rare gem that only shines for you.” He says with a loving smile. I stand up grabbing my bag and look over to him with a smile, “If you would excuse me but I believe I must return to the company.” I say seriously. He looks at me in disappointment and sadness. “I have to get started on work so I can catch up to take the C.O.O position hopefully soon.” I say with a smile. The old man’s face splits with a grin and his eyes shined in the light with his pooling tears. “I’ll see you in a few years then.” He says with content. I nod my head and shake his hand, “I’ll be back to take her, only if she’ll take me though.” I say lightheartedly. He chuckles at my comment and I excuse myself and leave the office to return to the sister company.

 Chapter One-

This morning I have finally gotten to the halfway mark of my goal by becoming the new C.O.O of W.A.D. I was being transferred tomorrow but as of right now I’m moving into a new apartment to be closer to W.A.D. I finish moving my furniture and boxes sometime around three and thought I might as well go greet my new neighbors. I had heard the next door to me open and close so I know someone’s home. I change out of my dirty clothes and put on a new pair of jeans and shirt. I leave my apartment and walk to the neighbor’s door knocking three times. “Come in!” I hear someone says. I twist the door knob and push the door open walking into a warm and bright apartment and then I stop breathing. It was her, Amelia. I stand frozen in my tracks not being able to believe that the woman I love was my new neighbor. I hear someone knocking on the side of the open door and Amelia looks between the stranger behind me and me. “Can I help you?” she asks but I just kept staring until I realized I look like a fool. “Yes, I just moved in and I wanted to say hi.” I say with a smile of relief. Amelia stands up from the couch and walks over to me extending her arm for a handshake. “Welcome to the neighborhood.” She tries to say cheerily but I could hear the strain and tiredness in her voice.  “I’m Amelia and that’s Ida, my best friend, who lives in 315, and you are?” She asks. “Hal White,” I say, holding out my hand for a shake. I didn’t see a reaction from her when I said my name so she must not know that I was going to be the new C.O.O as of tomorrow. She takes my hand in hers and I immediately felt electric charges when our hands touched. She lets go after a brief shake and wipes her hands down the side of her pajama pants. Oh yeah, she definitely felt it too. I turn to Ida and say a quick hello moving to the side to let her get through and into the apartment as she greets back to me. Ida walks over to the kitchen and starts rummaging and setting food on a cart. Amelia goes back and sits on the couch and makes eye contact with me. “So?Why did you move?” she asks. Not knowing what to tell her I simply tell her, “Work, I’m being transferred to a new company tomorrow.” She didn’t look that interested in my answer and replies nonchalantly. She turns her attention to Ida and asks if she could bring her the cider and some glasses when she came back. I could tell that she really didn’t want me to stay but she still asked if I wanted to stay out of politeness. “Sure, I’ll join why not?” I say with a smile and walk over to her windows to look at the view. I come back and sit in on a yellow chair to the left of her with a table lamp in between us. I can’t help but stare at her and take notice that she didn’t exude a strong aura of coldness as she did a few years ago but she still had it and I could tell that she still guarded her heart tight. My staring must have made her anxious because her hands start to fidget and she began to bite her lower lip which was incredibly sexy. “I’ll be right back.” she says coolly and I smile and nod at her. It has started, I realize that she ran whenever she didn’t feel comfortable. I look around her apartment, my eyes falling on her colorful tapestries and decorations but then realized that she didn’t have a single family picture or any picture of her at all, only ones of travel. Amelia comes back with a cart full of junk food and sweets setting the food on a table and pushing the cart to the side of the room. Ida sets the cider and glasses down on the table opening the cider and sits back in a fudge color chair next to the windows. Amelia digs in decorating her bowl with sides and toppings. I scoop chocolate ice cream into my empty bowl and grab a spoon. “What do you do for work? If you don’t mind me asking.” Amelia asks. I smile knowing that I had finally gotten a hold of Amelia’s interest. “I’m an architect and business man,” I tell her after setting my bowl down. “I’m sorry but I didn’t catch your last name earlier, do you mind telling me?” I ask with a smile. “Amelia Winters.” She says, reintroducing herself. I smile and nod at her and picking up my bowl to eat my melting ice cream. “What a name.” I comment knowing full well that she carried the name well with her icy exterior. I turn my attention to the movie that was on, it was an opera movie I had never seen before so I turn back to look at Amelia. “How are you?” I hear Ida ask Amelia. Something must of happen because Amelia responds the question coolly and stoically making Ida stare at Amelia. I look back and forth at their tense exchange and ask, “Is everything alright?” Amelia turns her attention to me and answers in a calm voice “yes, everything’s alright.” She begins to pour herself another glass of cider but stops before the cider spilled out. She sets the cider back down on the coffee table and stands up to walk over to the kitchen. She returns with her glass full of red wine and the bottle I her other hand. I notice that Ida raises an eyebrow at Amelia fully knowing that she wasn’t fine and I knew that too. I could see the restraints and longing in her eyes. “Are we celebrating anything tonight?” I ask trying to find out what her problem was. She takes in a gulp of wine and sits back down on the couch. “Yes.” She answers strongly. Her bitter response immediately grabs my attention. “I found out today that my friend is expecting.” She says. I look over at Ida wondering if she was the friend that was expecting but Ida simply shakes her head with pain in her eyes. “A congratulations is needed to be said then.” I say. “Yes, a congratulation is fully needed from me to Emma and Adan.” She says stoically. I look up Amelia surprised at her comment and empty voice. I say nothing unsure of what to say in this kind of situation. “They’ve been happily married for a year and a half now and I’ve given them my blessings.” She says trying to bring up the mood. “Two of the three people I love most have decided to start a life together so I won’t stand in their way, since I have been for the past decade.” She explains and I saw the flash of hurt and longing as I did a year ago but as soon as I saw it she immediately covered it up with her iron walls again. What happened two years ago? Drinking her wine and popping sliced strawberries in her mouth she turned her attention back to the movie. We watch the movie till the credits roll and Amelia gets up to change the movie. “Any requests?” she asks with a sigh, her shoulders slouching and her hair loosening out of her pony tail. I notice Ida rising from the chair and looks over to Amelia, “I have to head back to the café, I don’t know how much longer they can take without me.” She says with a sad smile. “It’s fine.” Amelia says smiling although her smile never reached her eyes. “I’ll be fine, go back to work I know how busy your café gets and you don’t have as many hands at work as I do.” she says again as if she was reassuring herself and Ida that she would be ok. “I’m sure Hal won’t mind staying with a buzzed me for a while.” She adds. Surprised that she would want me to stay longer I convince myself that it was for the benefit of Ida. I interrupt their conversation and offer to walk Ida to the door. I get up from the chair and walk over to the door with Ida standing by the open door as Ida stood outside in the hall way. I tell Ida good bye but she doesn’t make a move to leave. “I know how you feel about her.” She says quietly. I chuckle and smile, “Was it that obvious?” I ask. “Yes, but she’ll never know unless you tell her.” She says. “I plan to one day.” I say with a smile. Ida makes eye contact with me deciding whether to trust me with her or not. “I’m trusting her to you, she’s been hurt a lot and she’s finally starting to go back to her old self.” She says with a sad small smile. “One wrong move and she returns back to the way she was a two years ago and I won’t forgive you, neither will anyone who cares about her.” She glares at me. I nod my head with a smile but my eyes remain serious, “I’m dead serious about her.” I tell her honestly. She nods and turns to walk away. I close the door and return to the living room deciding to sit on the couch before Amelia said anything against it. “Anything against Disney movies?” she asks looking back at me I smile and shake my head in response. I move toward the middle of the couch instead of the side deciding that if she didn’t want to sit next to me she could ask me to move or sit on one of the empty chairs. She inserts a disk in and turns around and stares at me. She stands frozen for a moment deciding what to do and then moves to sit down next to me. Throughout the movie I saw Amelia looking at me for a split second with my peripheral vision and I did my best not to stare at her and concentrate on the movie deciding that I would leave after the end of this movie. At one point in the movie I noticed her body weight started to lean heavier on me and I looked over to find her asleep. Even in her sleep she looked guarded with her tense body which made me feel sad for her that she couldn’t trust many people. I gently brush loose strands of her black hair out of her face and put my arm around her to pull her closer to me. She immediately inched closer to me and happiness swelled in my chest. I try to stay awake during the movie but soon fall asleep with her in my arms. I wake up to find the television off and Amelia out of my arms. I get up to leave thinking that she went to sleep in her own bed leaving me for the couch but as I passed the hallway I saw the bathroom light on. “Amelia.” I call out waiting for a response. “Amelia? Is everything alright?” I ask but silence was her answer. Panic begins to grow inside of me and my feet moved faster after every step closer to the bathroom. I open and push the door open not bothering to knock and look around the spacious bathroom until my eyes land on her. Fear ran through my body when I saw her in the tub not knowing what to think of I rush to her side and touch her softly not knowing if she would break from my touch. “Amelia? Amelia, are you alright?” I force myself to say calmly. My arms go inside the tub and under her lifting her out of the tub. “Hal?” she weakly questions and she immediately tenses up from the cold air as I bring her out of the water. I force myself to stay calm and not look down at her naked sight rushing over to her bedroom setting her down on her bed. I hurry over to the window to close the curtains and jog out of her room to grab the towels I saw in the bathroom. I return with the towels and wrap one around her body as I took the other and climb onto her bed and kneel behind her to dry her hair. She turns her head as far as she could making eye contact with me and then turns to face forward again. “What time is it?” she quietly asks. I stop drying her hair with the towel in my hands and release a sigh of worry and panic. “It’s past midnight.” I tell her and continue to dry her hair again. I quickly French braid her long hair and tie it to keep it out of her way finding a tattoo I didn’t see on her before due to her long hair. It was an intricate design with no color, the lines varying in size of thickness and designs around it. I hesitate to dry her body but dared myself to get her out of her comfort zone and make her see me. She didn’t complain of me drying her so I continue. I take notice that she tried to lift her arms to help me dry her off but she couldn’t move them. I get off her bed and kneel in front of her drying her feet and legs and the bed suddenly creaks and dips low from the sudden weight of Amelia. She lies back as I dry her. I gasp from taking in the sight of her nudity and take deep breaths to calm myself down. “I’m sorry.” She says. “I’m sure you would rather be in your new apartment sleeping in peace instead of taking care of some twenty-nine year-old chick who’s buzzed on wine and bitter that her friend and fiancé has finally moved on, gotten married and has started a family.” She whines.  “Its fine,” I tell her, comprehending that the only reason why she was telling me this was because she was really drunk and had no control over what she said since I doubted that she would actually say this in a sober state. She would be admitting her weakness and her icy mask would never allow her to appear weak. I move in search for a shirt for her to sleep in and a pair of underwear. I find her closet and pull a soft baby blue shirt off the hanger and open a drawer to her dresser and find undies and socks in there. I grab a pair of normal looking undies and return to her not knowing whether to dress her or leave it to her to do it herself. “Can you put these on by yourself?” I ask her. “Or do you need me to do that as well?” She responds by weakly lifting up on of her legs as a sign that I was going to need to do it. I walk closer to her putting on her underwear one leg through the hole at a time and sliding it up her legs and over her round butt. My eyes land on her breasts but quickly avert to stay out of line of sight of the beauties. I pull her arms helping her into a sitting position. “You’re going to have to help me with the shirt.” She says and I grunt in response stepping even closer to her. I saw her eyes landing on my growing erection but I pay no attention to my lower part willing myself to get this torture over with. I slip her head through the head hole of the shirt and raise her right arm to slide through the arm hole. I repeat the action for her left arm only this time I accidently brush her right nipple causing her to gasp. “Sorry.” I say amusedly knowing that I wasn’t the only one affected and feeling this strong connection and intense emotions between us. I pull her shirt down to her waist and make eye contact with her but she quickly breaks contact. Clearing her throat, she looks at me again telling me that she was going to sleep now. I take it as a sign to leave and nod my head backing away from her and walking out the room. “Can you stay with me?” she blurts. Her sudden request stops me in my tracks. “Can you stay the night with me?” she asks again only this time with desperation in her voice and eyes when I turned around to face her. This was torture I thought, she really must know my intentions and planned to drive me crazy by making me stay near her but not be able to do anything. “If I stay promise me you won’t be mad at me tomorrow.” I say hoping she won’t be furious and reject my candidacy for the position. “I pinky promise I won’t get mad at you tomorrow.” She says with a sincere smile. I turn away from the door and walk over to the couch to make myself comfortable and freeze when I hear her next request. “With me.” She simply says. “Can you sleep next to me?” After I regain my senses and came back down from shock by her sudden request I walk toward the light switch and flick it off. I walk my way over to her bed and stop at the edge. You really shouldn’t be doing this, I warn myself and began to take off my jeans and shirt leaving me only in my boxer briefs. I lifted the comforter up and slid into the bed. Amelia shifts underneath the blanket and a bright screen shines lighting up the room. I turn my head and find Amelia setting her alarm on for the morning. She sets her phone back down on the nightstand and I make a daring move reaching my arm over her side and hugging her. Fear tickled inside my heart as I wait for her rejection but it never came. Instead she turns her body to face me and accidently brushes against my aching erection. I flinch and groan from the sudden contact willing myself to calm down and think of anything besides her snug fitted body against mine. “Sorry.” She quickly whispers as she realizes what she just bumped into. I release a chuckle finding it humorous that she would apologize for my erection. “No, I’m the one who’s sorry.” I say tiredly. Amelia cautiously puts her right arm over my side and I immediately bring her closer to me tucking her head under my chin and breathe in her scent. Thankful that the drunk Amelia wouldn’t turn me away. My heart felt heavy and full of content and happiness wishing time could stop. I listen to her breathing as it calms and becomes steady in a few minutes when she falls asleep. I lay in her bed listening to her steady breaths and calm heart beat. I stroke her head and place a kiss on the crown of her head falling into a peaceful sleep.
