Steve was 45 and Kiki was 19 when they met. Some would say he was robbing the cradle but the two of them didn't care about age differences. The had a fling that lasted from August to January and changed both their lives. She was working full time at her uncle Joe's wholesale auto parts business and needed afternoons off the following fall semester and Steve needed a few hundred dollars to get back home to California where his ex wife and daughter lived.

The morning they met, Joe come in at his usual time and Kiki was at her desk. "Kiki, good news! I found a man to take afternoons for you this coming semester. His name's Steve and he's bringing his resume today. I want to know what you think of him."

"How will I know him?"

"He's about my height, in his forties, and won't be wearing a ring. He's divorced and needs the money we'll pay him to get back to his daughter in California."

"Okay. Did he say what time? I want to go out for lunch."

"Didn't say. Sorry."

Steve got there at 11:30 with his lunch of a ham sub, potato salad, and soda.

"Hi, I'm Steve. I've got my resume for Joe

"He's busy with a client.

"I take it your Kiki."

"Yes. How did you know?"

"Joe said his office help was his niece Kiki. Putting 2 and 2 together equals Kiki."

"Have a seat. I'll tell Joe your here. On the intercom, Joe said, "Can you wait, Steve?"

"Sure. If you don't mind me having my lunch in your lobby."

"Sure don't, Joe," was her reply.

"Sounds like you're stayin' for lunch," she replied. "Hope you don't mind sharing my desk."

"Not at all, Kiki.”

“Thank you.” She took her plain boloney sandwich out of her plastic lunchbox.

“Whatcha having? he asked.

“Sounds pretty unexciting. Have some of mine. I've got plenty. A foot long and potato salad.

“Okay. But we don't have a knife to cut your sandwich.”

“Mind my fingers?”

He tore off about 1/3rd and handed it to her. “Potato salad?”

“Put it in the lid of your lunchbox?”

“Okay. This sandstuff is reall good. Thanks.”

They were down to their last bites when Joe came out. Do you think we should hire him, Kiki?”

She paused and said, “He's got a nice face.”

“Good enough for me. Kiki will give you the rest, Steve.”

“That's it?” he said to Kiki.

“Yep. It's just answering phomes, taking messages and sending orders to the warehouse. Classes start the week after next so I think next week would be enough time for you to learn what you'll be doing. Be here Monday about 11:45.”

“Okay. I should be going now. The friends I'm staying with need ome help this afternoon.”

“Thank, for lunch. I'll see you Monday, Papi.”

He paused a bit and held the open door. “Your cute too., Kiki.”
