A Former Someone

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder,
And distance gives us a reason to love harder,
But when I need you, it's now, not later, no delaying.
They say patience is a virtue,
But I don't want to wait, can't wait, won't wait.
The map on which this works out doesn't exist.

They say age is just a number,
But I know numbers and our math doesn't add up.
Where do you factor in maturity or naivety?
Do you divide out past relationships or subtract?
Our age is a sum of experiences and you might just be too old for me.
In theory, perhaps not. I suppose not.
And the gray in your beard will never fail to make me melt,
But alas...

They say opposites attract,
And I know that's true in physics,
So maybe that's why we were doomed from the start.
The chemistry was undeniable, true.
Exothermic - all heat and sparks, but maybe too much.
I've never met someone whose stubbornness rivals my own.
Competitive, jealous, arrogant - two rams butting heads.
But oh the primal dance!
Those traits do have a place in the bedroom.
The place of claws and teeth and lust.
I let you win there.

They say to never settle for anything less than a fairy tale,
And this I've found to be good advice.
