Chapter 1

There was blood everywhere, it felt like I was drowning on it. My clothes, my shoes, even my hair was covered in blood. I tried to talk, but nothing came out. All saw was that man stabbing her over and over again. It felt like I was looking from behind a glass, knowing what was going on, but without any power to stop it.

Finally the man stopped and all I could see was her broken body on the ground and the blood, there was so much blood. She wasn't’t moving and I wanted to scream and yell at her. Tell her to get up and move, to escape, but I knew that it was already too late.

All of a sudden it was me standing next to her, looking down at her face. Her eyes were open and they were looking straight at me. Her mouth opened and…

I jerked awake so fast that for a moment I expected to see blood on my hands, but there was nothing. I sat up on the bed and looked around me. I was still trying to shake that nightmare from my mind. My body was covered in sweat and I knew that if I looked in the mirror I would be pale.

I closed my eyes and rubbed my face. I hadn't had that nightmare in a long time, why were they coming back now?

“Kastia” my mother’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I looked at the door. It was still closed, I knew she wouldn't come in without knowing “You’ll be late for school, is time to get up”

“I’m up mom”

I waited until her footsteps faded to get out of bed. I walked to my mirror and cringe when I saw the bags under my eyes. I hated that stupid nightmare, it didn’t let me rest properly. I was positive that one of the reasons why I was getting them again was because it was really close to Anna’s anniversary. In a couple of weeks it would be two years since she left. No, I corrected myself, since she was taken from us. She hadn’t died in an accident or even from being sick. She had been killed.

It took me an hour to get ready. I walked down the stairs and saw my mom standing behind the kitchen counter. She had a cup of coffee in one hand and a stack of papers in the other. My dad was sitting in the opposite side of the counter also holding a cup of coffee.

“Morning” I said before they saw me.

“Good morning” my mom gave me a small smile “Just so you know, we won’t coming home until very late tonight. Your father and I have to go to Raleigh and help a colleague with a case”

“Don’t be late coming back from school” my dad said before I could answer my mom “Pick up something to eat on the way”

“Actually I have plans to meet with Tabby and Lacy” I picked up my purse and smiled at them “We are meeting at the café and then they’ll stay with me. We have a shopping trip planned for tomorrow”

“Ok then” my mom smiled.

***************************************************************

I left the house before they could try and interrogate me. My parents had known Tabby and Lacy since they had been born. It wasn’t like we lived in a huge city. We had all grown up in the same small town and everybody knew everybody. Lacy, Tabby, Anna and I had been best friends since kindergarten. Lacy and I had gotten in a huge fight and a couple of minutes after that Tabby and Anna had gotten in another one.  After that we had been inseparable.

When my sister died I thought that it would be the end of our friendship, that we would fall apart. It had been the opposite, the pain of Anna’s death had brought us together and we had created a much stronger bond. It had been two years since my sister’s death and there wasn’t a day that we all didn’t miss her, but we were getting better. The pain was finally going away.

“We thought that your parents would say no” Lacy said laughing “After all they know how much trouble we get in every time we are together”

“Oh, is that why we are always at the principal’s office?” Tabby said sarcastically making us laugh “and here I thought it was my charming personality”

“Actually I think it was the fact that you were hitting on Mr. Carter” I answered before Lacy could “I’m pretty sure that what you were doing was considered sexual harassment”

“It can’t be sexual harassment if he likes it” Tabby said moving her eyebrows mischievously “don’t worry he’ll fall soon enough, they all do”

We all broke down in a fit of giggles again. It felt good to laugh like this again. To be able to have a normal conversation between friends without that dark cloud hanging over out heads. This is exactly what I’ve been needing, more time with my friends. Time to forget about all the expectations my parents had for me now that my sister was gone and all the pressure I felt of being the perfect daughter so they wouldn’t be disappointed that their actual perfect daughter was dead.

“Do we know what we want to do?” Lacy asked taking a sip of her drink “I really don’t want to watch the notebook again. I think if I see the movie one more time I’m going to make Tabby eat it”

“Hey, don’t blame me for having taste” Tabby pretended to be offended.

“Honey, watching the same movie a thousand times and crying over the same scenes over and over doesn’t mean you have taste” Lacy took another sip before smirking at Tabby “it just means you need therapy”

“Bitch” Tabby said without any heat.

“Whore” Lacy threw back without missing a beat.

“Slut” Tabby smirked.

“You bother seriously need to stop” I rolled my eyes at them “Mrs. Andrews is about to throw us out of the café again, and no offense but I don’t like getting another lecture from my parents again about the proper way to behave in public”

“I think your parents need to chill” I rolled my eyes at Tabby, of course she did. Tabby was the definition of wild child “I know that being lawyers makes uptight, but they are taking it to a whole new level”

“Tell me about it” I answered her “they want me to follow in their footsteps and become a lawyer too. They even have an interview schedule with the dean at the university they attended”

“You are kidding” Lacy said “but they always knew that you wanted to do something related to fashion. We all knew that you were going to be the famous fashion designer and Anna was going to be the uptight lawyer”

The moment the words left her mouth her entire demeanor changed. For a moment she couldn’t even look at me. I understood why, for a while it had been that every time someone mentions my sister’s name we would all break into tears, but we had gotten better.

“I’m sorry” Lacy said “I didn’t mean to say that”

“Why not? Is true” they both looked at me surprised, but I needed to let them know that it was ok to remember Anna. We had been through too much together to just forget about her and pretend like she hadn’t existed “We can still talk about her, she was amazing and we all need to remember that”

They smiled sadly, but then we just kept going with out conversation. We had healed a lot in the past two years and with time would heal even more.

After a while we paid for our food and walked out the café. The door had closed behind me when I heard a familiar ding. I pulled my iPhone out of my bag and felt my blood freezing when I saw the text message from an unknown number. All the blood left my face and for a moment I thought I would faint.

‘One down, three more to go. Tell your sister happy anniversary when you visit her at the cemetery’
