She was by far his most favorite pet.  This one was so special.  She was strikingly beautiful, but so were all his pets.  She was extremely intelligent, but so were all of his pets.  She had a kind heart, but so did all of his pets.  She was everything that all his other pets were, but she had something more.  Something that brought him not only endless hours of amusement, but a peacefulness that nothing else in his world seem to bring him.  It was her he went to when everything felt lost.  She was the single thing that he took solace in.  And she had absolutely no idea he existed.
It had been nearly three thousand years since his kind had been banished to this plane, every second of that time spent trying to gain redemption and reentry.  He was not alive when the Great War began, born only a century after, and he had never met a human.  But he was fascinated by them.  They lived on the other side of an invisible veil, created when the Deceiver fell from grace and started this civil war.  The humans had to be protected at all cost.  His father was the one who first stood up against the tyranny of the Deceiver, creating the barrier that cast them all into chaos.  There were many that hated him for that, but many more that believed it was necessary.
He wondered what her hair would feel like against the tips of his fingers.  Would it be soft? Was it as thick as it looked?  He wondered what she smelled like, what she would taste like.  Very powerful individuals could reach past that veil for brief snippets of time, but that was an unusual talent, and a complete crossover was unheard of.
He had first come across her a couple years earlier.  There was such an innocence that sparkled in her eyes, it made him forget all the problems that constantly plagued him.  He had followed her home that night, and now visited her as often as he could.
He did the best he could to protect her from the danger she was constantly in, as he did for all his pets.  But for her, he would go above and beyond.  He needed her, though he would never admit that to anyone.  She was pure, untouched.  He had made sure of that, though it had cost him greatly.  He wanted to keep that little pleasure for himself, for the day he was finally able to lift the screen that separated their worlds.  That day was coming soon and as he watched the girl enjoying the steamy water of her bubble bath he felt himself harden in anticipation.
He released a heavy sigh.  He knew he had to leave her now.  It took him a moment to tear his eyes away as he tried to sear the image of her, so blissfully unaware of the terrible things that happened right around her, into his mind.

She had that odd feeling again. That feeling that someone was watching her.  She tried to shake it off, taking another sip of red wine.  In spite of the turmoil that had plagued her younger life, she had always felt like she had a guardian of sorts.  Not an angel.  She didn’t believe in them.  She had never prescribed to any religion.  Just wasn’t her thing.  But there was something watching over her.  She could feel its subtle power.  Like a tingle that tickled just at the tip of her spine, raising the tiny hairs on the back of her neck.
She often felt it there, watching silently over her, at times when trouble entered her life.  It would leave just as quickly as it came.  She had learned to ignore it, but she always wondered why it had chosen her.  Maybe it felt sorry for the way her life had begun.  Her parents never were the best, but they were still her parents and she was sad when they passed.  But that’s when she had first felt it, had sensed the stretch of its powers affecting her life.
Right after her parents death she received a lump sum settlement from a company that was apparently responsible for their death.  Overnight she had become a very wealthy young woman.  She tried many times to find out about the company, or more about the settlement, but there was not a scrap of information about them.  It was not the only time she knew that it had interfered.
She was almost married one time.  Her fiancé unfortunately killed in a horrific accident, the day after he had proposed.  Since that day she knew she would never be with a man.  This force, the same one that protected and provided for her was jealous.  Viciously so, she could feel it.
