Chapter 1

“Fuck this shit!” I screamed as I kicked the tire of my car. I slid down to the hot ass sand and lit a cigarette. I looked around at the surroundings and I'm in the middle of the Arizona desert. No cars in site, just me. Not only my tire is flat, smoke is coming from under the hood. “Why me? I am only 75 miles from Flagstaff!” I just drove for two days from St. Louis just to break down in the middle of a fucking desert. I looked at my cell phone, and of course, no reception. I decided to take a small state highway to get to Flagstaff quicker. I should have stayed on the interstate.

“I guess I better get in the car and cool off. I just filled the tank, I should be able to use the air conditioner for a few hours.” I threw the cigarette onto the asphalt and got in my car. I slammed the door and attempted to start my car again. It just sputtered at me and more smoke came out. I should have this clunker of a car serviced before I traveled thousands of miles. My goal was to be in Barstow, California by tomorrow. My sister must be worried. I haven't called in a few hours. She probably thinks I got kidnapped or murdered...or chickened out and turned around. “Hopefully some nice stranger will stop and take me to the nearest town,” I whispered.

Two hours has passed, and I smoked my whole pack of cigarettes. I tossed the pack out the window and I grabbed my water bottle. My tank is at half, I got another two hours before I began to roast. “Hurry up, stranger!” I mumbled.

A half hour, I must have dozed off. I heard a man clear their throat. “Ma'am? Ma'am are you okay in there?” I heard through the window. I woke up and turned to my left and swallowed. Damn! He is sexy! Very tanned, built and very dark and mysterious eyes. HE actually looks asian, but that doesn't matter to me! AND A COWBOY HAT! “Uh, yeah, car broke down...” I mumbled and he nodded.

“Yeah, I looked while you we're sleeping. You blew a gasket. I can tow you to town if you need me to.” I looked at his tow truck and praised to God that someone stopped.

“Yes, please and thank you!” I got out of my car and stood in front of my savior. He has to be over 6 feet tall, maybe early thirties. “I'm Brock Call by the way,” he introduced himself.

“Amelia Rodgers, friends call me Amy.” He motioned me to his truck and we got in. It smells just like a man in here. Very strong cologne, and just...male. He got in and threw his hat behind him. He has very wavy black hair, damn! I bet he has a wife or a girlfriend in town, so I shouldn't get my hopes up. “So, Missouri?” He said and I shook my head.

“Excuse me?” I questioned.

“Your plate, it's a Missouri plate. Why are you doing all the way in Arizona?”

“I'm going to my sister in California. She wants me to live with her as my parents...” nope, better not tell him! “...they are in a disagreement at work.”

“That sucks. Well, town in only ten minutes out, I should have this baby fixed and serviced in no time.” I just nodded and watched him pick my car up and we went onto town.

This little town, Greer, is cute. It's cooler than I thought it would be. We are at the base of the mountains, and I kind of like it here. Brock got us into his garage and it's almost 8 at night. Shit! “Where is the nearest hotel? My sister has to be worried about me,” I said and he laughed.

“Across the road, darling. Tell the manager Brock sent ya!” He grabbed his hat and I thanked him again and attempted to give him money for gas and the tow fee. “No doll, I never charge a towing fee. We shall discuss the arrangement of money after I fix your car.” Wow, such hospitality he has! I thanked him again and walked across the street.

I got my key to my room and went I got to my room on the third floor, I threw myself onto the bed. This feels so good! I grabbed my phone and FINALLY have service. I called Mallory, my sister, and she immediately answered frantic. “Amy, what the fuck happened to you? Are you in Flagstaff yet?” she yelled at me.

“No, my car broke down 75 miles out. A mechanic from the nearest town from me picked me up and took me to town. I will be a few days later than scheduled, but I'll be there as soon as possible.”

“That's fine with me, I'm just glad you're okay and still in agreement with this deal.”

“Of course I am. It was my idea in the begin with!” I paused for a minute and took in a deep breath. “Are they getting suspicious yet?” I asked her.

“Somewhat, Dad's thinking you got into something bad, and Mom is not even worried. She keeps telling him that you're twenty-one, you can do anything you want to.” Good, as long they don't know what we are planning to do, then we are okay.

“Listen, I'm gonna wash up and check out this cute town. I'll call you before I hit the sack, okay?”

“Okay, I'm worried about you baby sister. Please call me!” I agreed and got off the phone.

After a quick clean up, I got to the main lobby of the hotel and asked the manager about a good bar or club in town. He mentioned a small bar known as the “Knock Off”, and it's the hit of the town. When I got out of the doors, I noticed that Brock is not at his garage and it's closed for the night. It's night time anyways, why would he be working on my car this late?

I found the tiny, but cute, bar and you can hear loud rock music coming from the building. Good, after today's events, I need a drink or two. I walked in and everyone stared at me, like a forbidden stranger. Maybe it's my outrageously red hair I was born, or cursed, with. Or maybe my short dress I'm wearing. Maybe the heels...why did I agree to wear heels to a fucking bar? I went to the bartender and asked for a Rum and Coke on ice. I sat down on the stool and looked around. A lot of men are screaming at a NFL game between the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers. I guess these men are Cardinal fans. “Nice to see you all cleaned up, Miss Rodgers,” A familiar male voice said beside me. I quickly turned around and Brock is beside me, drinking a Bud Light from a bottle.

“You're nice and clean too, Mister Call. Come here often?” I said as I sipped on my drink.

“Every night after I close shop. I have no one to go home to, so I come here with some friends...” he turned around and pointed at the crowd in front of the game. “But they're into the game right now.”

“How much do you think my car will cost? How fast can you get it fixed? My sister...”

“In about four days. You know I'll be closed for the weekend? I will be done by Tuesday.” TUESDAY! I am supposed to have everything ready with Mallory on Wednesday by 9 am! I think I can get there on time. I took a deep breath and took in another sip. “What's fun in this town?” I asked him and he laughed.

“This here is the fun! Greer is not a big town. If you want fun, you need to go to Flagstaff.” I nodded and watched as Carolina made another touchdown, which made Brock's friends very mad.

I finished my drink and asked for another one. Brock gave me a strange look and laughed. “Rum and Coke? That's a bit fancy for these parts. We love beer here!” I laughed and drank a huge sip from the glass.

“Rum and Coke is not a huge favorite in St. Louis as well.” He nodded and got another bottle of beer.

“Come by the garage tomorrow morning, and we can talk arrangements. I may get you and your car out of here sooner than you think...” He winked at me and lay some cash on the counter. “That's for the lady as well. Good night Amelia.” He tilted his hat at me and walked out the door. Damn, that Brock Call can make a woman fell so hot and bothered by just winking at them. Brock Call, I may want to stay those few extra days just to see your ass in those tight Wrangler jeans!
