“Yes I can speak English” I say quietly, the man hovering over with his meaty fist on my arm. He gives a quick smile, using the other hand to caress my hair.

“You don’t even have an accent!”

“I was taken from my home when I very young” I shift my gaze to stare directly at him. “In fact my English is probably better than yours.”

It is a small room, probably a basement. The walls are grey and in the center is a chair with a handcuff linked to its nailed down leg, the other end clasped around my ankle. I can see blood stains on the floor from girls who were not as cooperative as me. My guard gives an irritated grunt, letting go. It would be harder for him to dispose of me, now that I have been paid for.

“Watch your fucking mouth” he snaps, long dirty hair falling over his cruel eyes, just proving me further right. I wonder if my buyer will be like that too. I cross my fingers like Yan once taught me too, before we were separated. The memory burns me, fresh tears in my eyes, though I don’t let the guard see them.

The door is steel and outside it are two more guards. They are even worse than this one, brutes with guns. I have seen people die before, all at the hands of evil men like them.

Just as I look away from the confining door, sitting back on my wooden chair, there is a knock.

“Ai Chu?” the first thing that grabs my attention is the fact that it is a woman’s voice calling me. I look up, a grim line cut across her face to pass for a mouth. The guard shoves me and I nod, turning to face her.

“Bless you” says the guard, reddening as he remembers my name. “I mean…”

“It’s fine, I’m sure it happens to her a lot.”

The first thing that strikes me when I actually see her is her beauty. Why would her boyfriend, I’m guessing, order someone like me when he had her? It did not make sense. Her hair fell in thick ringlets of mixed gold and red, shining like the sun. Underneath long, dark lashes were deep green eyes that gleamed like the polished jade I had seen in temples back home. To top it all off her pink lips were perfectly shaped like smooth waves, surrounded by tanned and flawless tanned skin.

Then there is the outfit. She is wearing a grey turtle neck and an A-line black skirt which makes it hard to tell what her figure is like. It had been so long since I had seen a young women around my age it seems unnatural, almost intimidating considering how gorgeous she is, to be near her.

“It’s good to meet you” the pieces of jade travel down my body, only to return and rest on my face. I remain perfectly still, making sure not to do anything that might make her change her mind about me. “I’m Parker Phillips.”

“Would you like to ride with her as we escort Ai to your house? We can have someone else drive your vehicle home…” the guard offers. I give her a warning glance; these men were more likely to steal the car than get it back to her.

“I’ll ride with her. Then I will return and redeem my car without your services” Parker rolls her eyes, tapping her foot. She is wearing black sneakers that do not match her outfit at all, but at the same time make her seem more inviting.

The guard snaps cuffs around my wrists, undoing the one on my ankle after. Next I am shoved out the metal door. The hide out had been under a busy highway (guess I was wrong about it being a basement), probably in case I screamed. Parker gets in the back with me, the guard handing her a gun and sealing the backdoor shut. It’s dark, but I think I can still see her hair faintly glowing. Maybe I was right; it really is made up of sun rays.

“So how much have they told you?” Parker’s voice sounds through the gloom. My eyes have already started to adjust, but not well enough to see anything past an outline of her body.

“That I’ve been sold, I’m to be married in Canada, and that I went for a fair price.”

“Damn straight” she sighs, I can hear the wear in her voice. “But it will be worth it!” I think I see a flash of a smile, but before I can be sure it is gone.

“I only wish to please” I recite the words I had been forced to memorize along with other seductive phrases.

Pause.

“Are you going to miss China?” my heart aches as I think of it, flashing the temple I lived in as a little girl. My father would sing there, welcoming everyone inside. Everything had been so peaceful then; it almost made me wonder how I had ended up on such a different path. Almost.

“No” I lie; I can’t have her feeling any regret over the decision to buy me. I figure that is the end of the discussion as I wiggle on the floor. There is no seating in the back of the truck. It used to be used for transporting furniture, but now it takes more lively cargo.

“I always wanted to go to China, it has a beautiful culture.”

“Like the Great Wall. They say you can see it from space” I venture, finally finding a comfortable way to sit. I rest my head away from the wall, the truck’s jolting would just make me bang it if I leaned.

“That’s an urban legend” Parker scoffed, was she already disgusted with me?

“Sorry.”

“For what?” God this woman is confusing, I wish there was some light in here so I could at least see her face. Men were easier to read, most were lead by the smaller of two heads that made them simple to figure out. However, as I had been taught, women did not have the same sex drive and were made to please men. Some were just more gifted at it; like me.

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Shoot.”

“There were so many girls to choose from, why did your boyfriend choose me?”

“Boyfriend? Wow, they really haven’t told you anything.”

“What? I don’t understand…”

“Ai…” her voice is low, apologetic almost. “You’re going to be marrying me.”
