Prologue October 2000

I am in a fog, a density of my past reality. I remember being here, but why am I back? It's deja vu' to the highest degree. I reach out with my left hand to touch my mother, and in return I'm met with fearful eyes.

"Sit back Charlemagne!"
I sat back so fast as if her words personally threw me back. I looked over and found my sister obeying my mother's frantic rules by staying put, sound asleep.
I'm glad, she's always known our mother to be strong, and
fearless, but right now, she's anything but. What was the cause
of this strong, courageous woman to break and fall into pieces? "Mommy? What's going on? Why are you scared?"
Her hands still gripping the wheel, knuckles turning white, and unseen eyes glues to the road ahead of her.
Anxious, labored breathing, but still trying to maintain
control of whatever situation was happening, she finally found words to conjure, "Charlemagne, why don't you sing a song for Mommy? Sing, "Colors of the Wind?"
I lower my eyebrows, and look down at my hands, "Mommy, I can't sing, wake Armada up and she can sing, "I Can Show You the World?" My mother frantically looked back at me as if I just struck her with a red hot iron.
"Don't wake your sister!"
She turned her eyes back to the road, as if there was a magical spell keeping her on track.
"Come on Sweetie, you sing beautifully, just like Pocahontas."
I took a deep breath and finally got the courage to sing, I barely got the first sentence out when my mother lost control
of the car.
Our car somehow had magnetically pulled the massive tree to us and had made a permanent residence in the middle of the car.
My breathing, like my mothers earlier was labored, I looked
down to find a large branch puncturing my chest. Blood making
its way down my body, staining what was probably perhaps my last outfit I was to wear alive. Even if I had the strength, this branch was not going to budge.
I was able to raise my head, but what I saw was going to haunt
me for the rest of my life. My mother's lifeless body was laying sideways on the steering wheel, a branch similar to mine made
its way through her petite neck almost taking her head off entirely. Her eyes wide open, blood shot from the force of the impact. She saw what was coming before it even happened.
Fresh tears made their way down my face, until I forgot, Armada. I slowly turned my head to find Armada with an angry

gash across her forehead, blood making making its way down her face. She looked worse then what she was, then again there could e something internal.
She was still breathing, knocked out, which was good, she wouldn't feel anything. I can't say the same for myself. I wish
my body would just give in, and I can be at peace with my mother. It felt like hours, Hell even days, I wasn't sure but I heard more than felt my door being wretched open. I heard two voices
or what I could make out in my current state. One panicked,
and one calm and determined.
"We shouldn't be here, if they find out we were involved..."
"Shut up! You've said too much already. She has been through
enough without you adding to her already growing fear.
"It's too early, you can kill her."
"Don't you think I know the consequences? I have to try otherwise she's dead either way, I couldn't live with myself.
When the determined voice was finished he ripped the heavy branch from my chest.
I started to cough up blood, and was starting to loose all sense
of breathing.
"You're losing her damn it!"
"No, I'm not."
As soon as he touched my left hand, I screamed.
Screaming, I flew up into a sitting position on my cot. Breathing heavily I threw out my left hand, it wasn't just a
dream, it wasn't a nightmare, it was real life. Looking at my left hand, the scar traveled up my arm and ended just under my
jawline, It resembles the angry tree branch that held me against my will, and everyday it's a constant reminder what I
went through and a scar that I'm forced to live with.
Why do I have to keep reliving this? Why now more than ever? Is my subconscious trying to tell me something?
