I’m leaning against the deli counter staring at the endless options of chips. I held my breath and contemplated. Decisions, decisions, what lucky winner will be accompanying me tonight in the all so fancy one bedroom apartment overlooking the parking lot from the third floor?

I licked my dry lips and folded my arms; I was in a deep conundrum until I hard an annoyance from behind me. “Jesus! The President doesn’t even take this long to veto a bill, get what you need and get the hell off my counter, this isn’t your home!”

I rolled my eyes, unfolded my arms, I guess it’s the usual. I walked up and got the nameless brand of potato chips and turned around to face the counter. “I would like something from your counter.”

He raised his eyebrows in surprise, “What can I get for you?”

I walked up closer to the counter leaned in, and then I proceeded to reach and grab a sample. I put the cheese between my teeth and slowly pulled the cheap toothpick out. I started chewing slowly and began to display a disgusted look on my face. I looked back up, “The next time you want to hurry me along, I would do it with a lot more respect, because you never know,” I flicked the toothpick into the deli, “Who you might be serving, good day.”

I made my way up to the register with a smirk on my face, as I set my salty junk food down. As the cashier started to ring me out, I noticed the downpour smacking into the storefront window. “Ah Fuck!” I mumbled not realizing the cashier was trying to get my attention by annoyingly coughing. I turned back to face her and squinted my eyes, “Yes?”

“You have wine here.”

Holy shit we have a future employee of the month here. I looked down and noticed the now sweating white wine in my vision. I looked back up and gave her an award-winning smile, “So it is.”

She narrowed her eyes; she knows perfectly well that I was patronizing her, well good for you!

“I need to see some I.D. “

I rolled my eyes and pulled out my crumbling laminated card and handed it to genius.

She looked at the card, then back up to me and raised an eyebrow.

“I know, it’s pretty old and has seen better days, but rest assured it’s me.”

“It’s not that.”

“What is it then? Can you not read my birth date or something?”

“Your name is Austen? Isn’t that a boys name?”

I snatched the card from her hands and stuffed it back into my wallet. I tore out a twenty and slammed it down on the counter, ”If you weren’t such an ignorant, self absorbed little twit, you would look past how it sounded and looked how it’s spelled.”

“I did, it’s a boy’s name.”

“I was named after the Jane Austen, do you even know who that is? I guess not because of our-oh so fabulous education system we’ve got going on now. At least my mother was creative, and not picked the first name that came to her coherent thoughts while drunk!”

“Hey my name is a classic.”

I looked down at her name tag, “No my dear, my name is a classic, yours is typical, ordinary, boring, and let me guess it was at the top of the baby book list for girls?”

She didn’t say a word. I grabbed my bag; giving myself a mental high-five, “Don’t be discouraged, I’m sure one day when you have children you’ll think of a more creative name than Brittany.”

I didn’t wait for a response as I pushed open the door, and was greeted right away by the torrential downpour. Well this sucks, but I must look on the bright side, I only live five fucking blocks away, and I’m already soaked to the bone, what else could go wrong?

As I was finishing my question, fucking fate decided to come in and answer it for me. As I was starting my unpleasant journey home, a man who was, like always too busy on his damn cell phone, apparently didn’t see my 5’4’’ frame and knocked me right onto my ass. But that wasn’t the best part, oh no, I fell right into a massive puddle, oh and it doesn’t stop there, the cherry, to this masterpiece my wine, smashed, my salvation, now in the mix with the city filth and dirty rainwater. Ah, gone to waste, I’m sure the wine Gods will punish me for sure. I smiled oh wait they already did, damn.

The worst part, He didn’t even apologize, Hell he didn’t even look in my direction. He just casually walked into the store as if he didn’t have a care in the world; well he’s going to care.

I never got up from my position I just waited. Ten minutes later he comes bursting out of the doors as fast as he walked in, perfect!

As soon as he got into my reach I stuck my foot out in front of me, and before he tripped over said leg I noticed how expensive his shoes were. Good, now he’ll know just a taste that all us, “commoners,” get on a day-to-day basis.

When he fell he landed in the same puddle I was situated in and his phone went flying into the busy rush hour traffic. I smiled at the phones fate a looked back at my target. His driver quick to come to his aide and helped him up. I already beat him to it, and I didn’t even need a fancy butler, huh fancy that.

I started to walk away when I heard an angry voice, “Hey, how about next time you watch where you’re going!”

I stopped dead in my tracks turned around, cold-water droplets streaming down my face; I squinted my eyes and screamed, “ditto!”

His jaw dropped and he was speechless. Satisfied with my retort I took a deep breath; turn on my heel chips in hand, with the rest of my sanity and made my way back home.

When I got home I just felt disgusting. As soon as I locked my door, with every step I took, I shed a piece of clothing making my way to my sanctuary, my shower.

As soon as I stepped in I let the scolding hot water ease my aching muscles and to sooth my soul, that is until I heard an annoyance that was a pounding at my door. Sigh, I’m too into my own little world to step out for one second and have to deal with the real world that is situated right next to mine. Whoever it is can come back if it’s that damn important.

After finishing my cleanse; I reached for my razor to shave my legs. While I stroking my legs I felt off, “Hemmingway?” and I had a right to be because as soon as I looked up someone busted through the door as if there was a fire and I needed rescued. I was so caught off guard that I slipped and fell full force onto my back causing me make a huge gash from ankle to hip with my razor. “Son of a Bitch! Hemmingway, is that you?”

Just then the curtain flew open, and it was the stranger I encountered just an hour before. I quickly covered myself and held the razor up for protection. He leaned down, and I quickly reminded him of the weapon that was in my possession, “Relax if I wanted you dead, you would be.”

I looked down at the open wound, and it looked angry. My scolding relaxing water was now freezing cold and being tainted with my blood. Around, and around the red water circled down the drain, keeping me hypnotized and ignoring my current surroundings. That is until I felt a velvety soft towel being draped over me, and I was lifted with such ease by the stranger. “Such trust you bestow upon me, a stranger.”

I looked into his Sapphire eyes, “I have no choice, my life is literally in your hands, what you chose to do with it, only you know.”

“Who’s Hemmingway?”

“What makes you think you can break in, bust through my bathroom door, and ask for demands as if I broke into your home?”

“You technically did.”

“What the Hell, you nutcase! I live there. I pay rent just like every other person living in that dump.”

He stopped right in front of his Jaguar, “I own that said dump, and concerned about everyone who lives in it. When you deliberately tripped me you dropped your wallet. Now I was going to call it a day and leave it there, but I thought I would be the better man and return it to you.”

“Oh my God, What a fucking Saint!”

He put me into the passengers side and slammed the door.” On his way to the other side, I decided to try and make a break for it.

When he got by his side I quickly opened my door and made haste, to where, well not my fucking home, apparently doors are not an obstacle for him.  It seems that I keep running with no destination. I don’t even know where I’m going and I’ve lived here my whole life.

As I’m running I start to feel light headed, I slow down enough to catch my breath but when I slow down everything is a blur, I can’t even make out what’s in front of me let alone if that lunatic caught up to me.

I didn’t look down in time, a rotted old tree lying on the ground tripped me and I fell to the sharp, wooded ground. I was in so much pain that I would greet the darkness right about now. I looked down on my leg and the mean gash on my leg started to look life threatening, warm blood flowed fast from my leg and made its final stop on the wooden ground of doom.

I looked up to the thick canopy of trees and closed my eyes, well there could be worse deaths to go out on, I just wish I had found out whom that nutcase was, and what he wanted with me.

It seemed like forever, as I was starting to succumb to the other side, a heard a distant voice, a frantic one. I wish I could shout,  I wish I could scream, but I guess this is the defeat for me.

I muster enough strength to turn my head, and alas, he caught up to me, to finish the job to put me out of my misery? He leaned back on his heels and brushed his hands together. I couldn’t believe my eyes a soft flame came upon his magical hand. As I watched in awe I slowly reached for his glowing light only to be caught with his other extinguished hand, he held me tight, eyes I hope don’t lie, “This is going to hurt.” He put his glowing hand over my angry wound, and I screamed, and I knew for sure that I could trust him, because his eyes didn’t lie.
