Doug watched from the bench in front of college as Sam made her way through the car park with Jason’s arm draped over her shoulders. He was trying to be happy for her, he really was. But that bitter jealousy swelled in him like heartburn and he just couldn’t get rid of it. It didn’t help that Jason was rather physically appealing and totally more Sam’s type. They even had matching tattoos before they had even met. Talk about a natural connection.
The two blondes were gaining on him, too deep in conversation to notice him waiting. This was the first time he had seem Sam today. She no longer jogged by his house in the morning. Now she went to the gym. With Jason. He was wearing his usual black leather jacket with his work clothes underneath. A simple white shirt and black pants. But even they looked good on his slender physique.
“Right, you’d better go. I don’t want you to be late,” Doug heard Sam tell Jason. They both stopped and he pulled her in for a hug. Then he went to kiss her rather passionately, but after spotting Doug smiling at her, Sam turned it into a quick goodbye peck, not wanting to be one of those couples that awkwardly make out in public. Especially not in front of Doug.
“I’ll see you tonight?” asked Jason, still holding her close.
“Sure.” She grinned.
He let her go and turned to Doug, who had now got to his feet. Jason waved to him. “Laters, Doug.”
Doug smiled and awkwardly waved back. “Yeah…laters.”
After watching Jason disappear through the college gates, Sam spun back to Doug. “I didn’t keep you waiting long, did I?”
Doug shook his head, making his thick brown curls bounce. “Only been here a few minutes. So-” He nodded to where Jason had gone, “-you two seem to be doing well.”
Sam bit her lip to suppress a grin. “So far so good. Six months. I’m pretty proud of myself.” She laughed.
Doug smiled. “I’m proud of you, too.” And that wasn’t a lie. Sure, he would rather it have been him that she was kissing and cuddling and getting all gooey over but that couldn’t happen. Not after what she did with his dad. That was still a rather large elephant in the room but Doug had found a way to deal with it. Plus it helped that his mum had finally come to her senses and kicked his dad out. The divorce had just gone through.
He looked down at his watch. “We actually have a few minutes before class starts. What do you have first?”
“Art. Can’t you tell?” She gestured to her paint splattered denim playsuit. “You?”
“Physics. Can’t you tell?” He pointed to his round Harry Potter glasses. Sam laughed which made Doug grin his goofy grin.
“You doing okay in that? Because I didn’t do it so I can’t help you pass like I did with your Maths.”
“I’m doing alright. Thanks for that by the way, I’d have never gotten that B without you.”
Sam grinned. “What are friends for?”
He nodded towards the building and they made their way inside. “Speaking of friends,” Sam continued as Doug held the door open for her. “How’re things going with Callum?”
Ah, Callum. The guy who had been referred to as Socks up until three weeks ago when Doug heard the guy behind the counter say his name.
“Not bad. Not bad. We only really talk about comic book stuff but’s it’s alright.”
Sam elbowed him in the side playfully. “Check us out, aye? Me with a long term boyfriend, you with a new friend. Turns out we could help each other after all.”
Doug laughed. “True.”
They reached the point where they needed to part ways and both stopped in the middle of the corridor. “I’ll see you at break?” Doug asked.
Sam smiled. “Yeah, sure.”

Sam sat in her art class working on her ink study. Her new project was on roses. Her fascination with them had grown significantly since she had seen Jason’s rose tattoo on his right forearm with the words ‘love and forever’ underneath it. Apparently it was about an ex-girlfriend. Sam had suddenly felt very awkward but then he laughed it off saying how ironic the tattoo now was yet he still loved it. That’s when Sam wanted to share with him the significance of the roses that covered the entirety of her back. She’d never told anyone before. That every rose represented a mistake she had made, a mistake so terrible that she needed to feel physical pain to cancel out the ache in the pit of her stomach. But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She knew he wouldn’t be able to handle it. He’d want to know what the mistakes were and she really didn’t want to go down that road.
Steven had tried to get in touch with her for a few weeks after their little saucy encounter, but Sam had ignored the calls. And when he made himself known when she was tutoring Doug, she gave him the cold shoulder. Finally, he got the message and left her alone.
The vibration in her pocket startled Sam out of her trance. She slipped her phone out and checked the new text from Jason. ‘Change of plan, my parents are home.’
She replied, ‘No problem. My mum’s at work until late. Come to mine about 6ish.
I’ll be there ;)
Sam grinned as the butterflies that swarmed in her stomach just at the thought of what they were going to get up to together.
