CHAPTER ONE
THE LETTER

Eleanor Barns tidied her office desk ready to go home, she lives on her own in a three-bed terrace house in Barford, a small town in the English Yorkshire Dales. The petite nineteen year old, made her way to the ladies restroom her, waist length ash blond hair swaying in ringlets as she walked.

"Elle!" Sharron called, running along the corridor.  Elle stopped, to allow her to catch up.

"Oh! Can I walk to the bus stop with you?" Sharron asked breathlessly.

"Yes, why?  What happened to your car?" asked Elle, as they carried on toward the restroom.

"It’s in for a road safety service. Now I know how a guy feels," said Sharron chuckling.

"So, what you up to tonight?" asked Sharron as they entered the restroom.

"Oh, the usual I suppose, go home, find out what Sister Anna has left me for tea, wash up and reset the table for breakfast.  Then, I might just chill in front of the telly before bed.  Actually, I was thinking, of going on my laptop and looking for a holiday," said Elle.

"Now, that sounds like a great idea to me kidder, why don’t you look at Spain?  A friend of mine went to Lloret de Mar, last year.  She had a fabulous time, and the guys there were WOW!"  Sharron gestured at her crotch with her hands. "She asked me to go with her this year, as she says there are some awesome women there too,"  again Sharron gestured large breasts with her hands.

"Sharron you’re so crude!  It always has to come down to sex with you.  Anyway, I haven’t got a passport," said Elle, washing her hands.

"So, what are you thinking of then?"

"I don’t know… Scarborough, Skegness, or Blackpool maybe.  I did think of trying a Scottish tour.  I love the look of the scenery," Elle said, drying her hands.

Sharron pulled a face,  "Oh god Elle.  They’re for old wrinkles.  Ugh!  Just think, five days with the walking dead!" Sharron was now washing her hands.

"SHARRON! That is so horrible and disrespectful!" shouted Elle angrily at Sharron’s reflection in the mirror as she began brushing her hair.

"Wow! Wow! OK! Sorry, just kidding," Sharron gestured at Elle to calm down through their shared reflection in the mirror.

"Yes, well, I don’t find that sort of talk funny, I’d love to have gone on holiday with my Dad, but…" Elle halted her grooming and stared aimlessly into the mirror.

"I know, and I'm sorry Elle. I just didn’t think, that’s all," Sharron turned and took Elle into a hug.  She then turned back to the mirror and began tidying her makeup.

Elle continued to brush her ringlets, and draped them over her shoulders.  She considered herself fortunate, in that she has no need for makeup, as she was blessed with a smooth, unblemished complexion,  large deep blue eyes, a well-proportioned nose, beautiful ruby red lips, along with a natural blush to her cheeks.Elle then brushed her hair and put on her coat.

"You are so beautiful Elle, and your hair is fantastic, don’t you ever get asked out?" Sharron asked shaking her head slowly.

"No, but I don’t really go out anywhere, only to the shops and here," replied Elle.

"You really should go out more you know, why don’t you come with me sometime?"

"I don’t think so; I’m not really into your lifestyle," Elle said, pushing through the restroom door. She continued walking along the corridor, toward the reception area.

Sharron ran out after her.  "I don’t mean…. Look, I go out to other places, besides lesbian and Bi clubs you know," said Sharron curtly, trotting after her.

"Thank you, but no, I’m happy with my life.  It may seem tame and boring to you, but I love my home I just thought, why not try a holiday for a few days this year?"

"Yeah! You might meet a nice boy, or girl, and have a holiday romance." Sharron wiggled her eyebrows and smiled.

"Oh! There you go again; you’re just impossible," Elle shot back, stomping off down the steps toward the bus stop.

One of the other office girls called Sharron over to them.  Elle jumped onto the bus, showing her pass.  She flopped down into a seat and closed her eyes as the bus pulled away.

Elle recalled the conversation with Sharron.  'OH! That girl is obsessed with sex,’ she thought  watching the familiar houses, shops, and streets pass by until the bus finally approached her stop.
After crossing the busy main road, she began to climb the hill. This was the road, she had lived in all her life. Lined both sides with Victorian style terrace houses, some of which have been extensively refurbished, others just painted.  Trees dotted the road, which gave it a pleasant suburban feel.  As she neared the top of the hill, she could see her home on the right hand side of the road.  This is the house her father had bought, he worked all hours god sent to pay back the mortgage.  That was his commitment to her mother in the hope they would live out their retirement years in it together.  Elle finally reached the front door, letting herself in.

After removing her coat in the hallway, Elle walked into the dinning room to see a well-laid table, with one place setting on a white table cloth.  A note placed in the setting reads.

 Dear Elle,

There I ham salad, a glass of juice and a treat in the fridge.

The kettle is filled; a tea bag is in the mug,

 Love,

Sister Anna,

P.S. A letter came; I signed for it, I left it for you in front of the vase on the table.

A vase containing fresh flowers stood in the middle of the table.  Elle recalled the large greenhouse at the Convent, where the nuns raised plants from seed to be planted out in the garden.  These supplied vegetables for the kitchen and flowers to brighten up the church. Any surplus plants went to  a stall outside the convent to raise much needed funds.  Elle spent most of her formative years in the convent boarding school.  Sister Anna had become like a surrogate mother to Elle,  since the death of her mother at the age of five.  Although Sister Anna is now past retirement age, she still enjoys coming to the house and helping out in the morning, then leaving a meal for Elle to come home to in the evening.

Elle got the salad and juice from the fridge, then switched on the kettle.  Sitting at the table, she noticed the brown envelope, curiosity getting the better of her.  Elle opened it, taking out the contents.  Eleanor’s heart sank at the official looking documents which read:

‘Bartholomew and Co. Solicitors.’  She remembered the documents she used to get following the death of her father, but this was from a different solicitor,  this one was from Plymouth.  Elle continued to read:

Dear Miss Barns,
We are contacting you for the reason that you are named as sole heir and beneficiary of the late Mr Bernard McPherson.
His last will and testament is to be read at Elitch House, Anbury, Devonshire, at 1200 hours, on Wednesday 15th June.  Where your presence will be required.
You will need to bring with you three items as proof of identification.
If this date is inconvenient, please contact me on the above number, so we can arrange a more suitable date and time.
Yours faithfully
Robert Jenkins
Shultz and Jenkins Solicitors and conveyancers,
Part of the Bartholomew and Co. Solicitors, Group.

Elle stared at the letter.  She read it several times, racking her brain as to whom Bernard McPherson was.  She had never heard the name, and there was no one in her family left to ask.  Elle returned the letter to its envelope.  She decided that tomorrow she would ring this Mr Jenkins, and say they must be mistaken as she had no knowledge of such a person.
After washing up and putting away, Elle set the morning breakfast table and filled the kettle.  She then made her way upstairs.  Elle had a ritual; she showered, got ready for bed and then sat at her dressing table, brushing her hair, putting it into a ponytail.
Elle would then either switch on the television and get into bed, or she would read or play games on her laptop until sleep overtook her.
However, tonight, the mysterious letter kept nagging at her.  After getting into bed, Elle picked up her laptop and typed the name of the solicitor’s into the search engine.  They seemed to be authentic.  Next, she typed in, Elitch House, Devon. To her amazement.  Page upon page of information came up on the screen.  There was a description of the house and Estates, complete with pictures of the interior and exterior.  They also showed the history of the house, which included lists of successive ownership.
Elle sat mesmerised by so much information. ‘You’re certainly not cut out for this kind of lifestyle, Elle Barns’ she thought to herself.
Elle gave up in the early hours of the morning, her eyes, feeling the strain of trying to read and concentrate on the information.  She drifted off to sleep while the laptop remained open, displaying the last page she was attempting to study.
