Chapter 1

Regardless of what people see in me, I’ll always be the shy girl. Every girl had a least one moment in their life where they wanted to popular and fit in with the Britney spears wannabe’s of the world.

I’ve been unpopular my whole life since elementary school.

God, I never knew girls could be so damn cruel.

We have all had our points where certain girls pick on us at school in front of our friends, boyfriends or boys we liked or used to like. Unfortunately in about a hour and a half, I’m going to school with the girls who made fun of me my whole life.

Right now, I’m lying in my bed staring up at my blank ceiling. This is my first day of eleventh grade. And its going to be hell.

I was your average weirdo seventeen year old virgin. My hair was surly going down my back.

And I wore black glasses. I was told I looked pretty with and without them.

My mother, in seventh grade got me those Harry potter glasses at first. No. I was not going for that.

I pulled the covers back and wiped my eyes. I put my glasses on and got out of bed.

I went into my bathroom, turned on the bathroom light and looked into the mirror at my brown eyes.

I’ve always wanted hazel or blue eyes like my friend Gina but instead, I got stuck with theses brown ones that hardly works.

I took off my clothes and got into the shower. The water was cold so I assumed my brother, Jacob, had used it up all the hot water, I hated when he did that. I was irritated already and school hasn’t even started yet.

When I got out of the shower, I wrapped a towel around myself and brushed through my hair.

When I get dressed in the morning, I used to like to wear skanky clothes for attention but eventually, I just settled for comfortable clothes.

After getting dress in jeans, baby doll shoes and a black t shirt, I put my hair in a side pony tail, grabbed my jean jacket and bag and ran down the stairs.

I don’t eat in the mornings really. Never had enough time.

"Going to school!" I shouted.

The school was only four blocks away. Damnit I want a car.

I approached the school and immediately became pissed.

I slowly walked up the concrete stairs and opened the door.

It hasn’t changed at all.

The lockers were still dark blue and some were gray. The tile floor still had a cream color.

I could feel this year was going to be long.

"Are you….lost?" Asked a deep voice. I turned to the voice and looked up to see a tall man smiling at me. Wow. He’s really….cute.

"What was that?" I asked.

"Are you lost?" He asked again.

I shook my head. "No, this is my third year here. I’m just….taking it all in. Getting ready for the eleventh grade."

He smiled. "I’m the new eleventh grade English teacher." He said.

"Ahh."

"You don’t sound excited." He said. I shrugged.

"It depends, sir. Are you a hard teacher?" I asked. He took a step towards me. A small smirk wa son his face. Almost a full smile as if I missed some joke. "Yes," He answered. "I’m very hard."

I don’t know why but I blushed.

"Well then I have you last class." I said.

He nodded. "Be prepared to be overworked Miss….."

"Wesley. I’m Dakota Wesley." I said.

He smiled. "Miss Wesley."

I smiled and turned to go to the auditorium. The place we all had to go before classes start every morning. The principal, Mrs. Lynch, was talking about schedules and soon all the teachers and students were all dismissed to class.

My first class was Geometry.

Second was chemistry

Third was physical education and the fourth was English II.

For a girl who has a reputation as a complete nerd, I got bad grades. I was always in the C and D range. Ever since I hit middle school, its been this way.

My mom always expected me to get good grades. I honestly try but she has to learn that I’m not Miss perfect.

By the time it was lunch time, I sat at the same table me and Gina has sat at through sophomore and freshmen year. it’s a shame that after two years, I’ve only made one friend.

"How eleventh grade treating you?" She asked.

"How do you think? Gretchen kept talking about me throughout the classes."

"I think she’s obsessed with you." Gina said smiling. "I wouldn’t be surprised. She’s always up Kayla’s ass." I laughed with her and we finished our lunches.

When English came up, I walked in and sat in the room. And the man from earlier came in the room. He smiled as he entered, grabbed a green marker, and put a name on the board.

"Are you always the first person in here?" He asked.

I looked around at the empty chairs and then to him. "Essentially." I answered.

"You’ve been early since your freshmen year?"

"I normally roam the halls until its time to come to class but I’m trying to get straight A’s this year. Doubtful its going to happen but a girl can dream."

The teacher smirked. "I think you can do it, Dakota. Don’t doubt yourself."

"I can do it," I glanced at the board at the name. "Mr. Kidner."

He leaned against the desk and sighed. "No one is going to like me very much."

Why would he think that? I like him. Maybe a little too much. He was handsome. Beautiful even. His eyes were green, he had a tan and a sexy smile. What’s not to like?

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I’m giving four assignments today and a little homework."

"Why?"

"Because the more work I give out, the more you learn."

I rolled my eyes.

"That’s something any typical teacher would say."

He smiled a perfect smile and it left me breathless. I don’t understand how this good looking guy can have me talking to him like I knew him forever. I’m normally shy.

Soon, students poured in. Including Gretchen and Kayla.

They sat two tables from me and were giving me dirty looks.

I don’t know why but im the kind of girl who can’t stand it when people don’t like me.

But not everyone will like me.

I had to learn that soon.

Mr. Kidner stood in front of the class and introduced himself and told everyone what we will be doing today.

Gina came in late as usual and sat next to me. "Ooh…hot teacher. It’s about time."

"Take out a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil." He said. He slowly paced around the room smiling. Damn he was gorgeous.

His eyes caught mine and I sank in my seat and blushed. Oh so now I’m shy.

Our assignment was to write three paragraphs about something we cared about. None of my old English teachers ever assigned this but I did it anyway.

Half an hour later, I turned in my paper along with the other students.

"Come collect your papers as you leave." he said as the bell rung to go home.

Everyone walked pass grabbing their papers.

I grabbed my mine and glared at the red D that was on it.

Mr. Kidner may be beautiful, but he just pissed me off.

I waited until all the students left from the room.

"What’s wrong?" Gina asked as she came beside me.

Her eyebrows raised. "Dakota, the assignment was easy."

"I will catch up with you later." I said.

She nodded an walked off.

I went up to Mr. Kidner’s desk. "Ah, miss Wesley, what can I do for you?" He asked.

"You can start by telling me why you gave me a D." I said.

"Your paragraphs were not indented. Some of your words weren’t capitalized and you were missing some words. You didn’t give enough details and your paper was rushed through.

I felt like it didn’t go anywhere or tell me anything that would keep my interest."

I’m going for all A’s this year, Mr. Kidner. Having a D on the first day of school isn’t a good start."

"Then you have to make an effort, Dakota."

I sighed and we stared at each other for a little. "Well, can I write another paper?’ I asked.

"Yes. Some points will be taken off." He warned. I shrugged.

"Doesn’t matter. If there’s one thing I learned in my eleven years of high school, its that something is better than nothing." I grab my bag and boldly exit’s the classroom although I feel him staring at me.

I feel proud of myself for confronting him.

The old shy me wouldn’t have done that.

The next morning, I woke up restless. I kept thinking about Mr. Kidner. I wrote that paper last night. I put in more details. Capitalized my letters. Indented and took more time to write it.

I quickly showered, got dressed and did my hair.

I was in a rush to give this paper to him….and to see him in general.

He made me feel something I don’t normally feel.

As soon as I got to school, I went straight to the English room.

Mr. Kidner is wiping something off the board and then locks eyes with me. "Hi. I wrote another paper." I say.

He smiled at me. "Good. I’ll grade it right now."

He took the paper from my hands, laid it down on the desk and took out a red pen.

He read it silently to himself and started with the marks. Damnit.

But in the end, my final grade was a B. I smiled.

"See? You put in effort this time and you got it." He placed his hand on mine on the desk.

Oh. Butterflies fluttered through my stomach. I felt like I was about to pass out.

My heart quickened.

The room became dizzy.

My skin became red and hot and I had this odd feeling down under. Was I….? oh.

I think Mr. Kidner noticed this and he took his hand away.

"Are you okay, Dakota?’ He asked.

I breathed deeply and nodded. "I just….I feel sick. I have to go." I quickly rushed out of the room and turned the corner.

Did that really just happen?
