A short poem.

White wolf’s paws thud over the ground
Its snowing, white blankets over the town
She see’s lights on in the distance
Why is she here and not in the forest?
In the mountains?
Why is she in a town where humans live?
Where humans eat, drink, sleep, and kill for fur, for valuable things
She hasn’t anywhere else to go.
The forest she once lived in has burst into flame.
The tree she once hid in has submitted to blade.
She knows she shouldn’t be here
She knows it’s a danger
Sharp cold winds feel like they are blowing through her bones
In her mind she can hear them rattle.
She whines at the hunger piercing through her
A paw thuds to the ground
Claws dig in scraping up snow and gravel from the pavement
She now stands near a waste bin at the back of a house
She’s had to retort to this
Taking from humans as they have taken from her kind
An ear rises to a laughing sound
She edges behind the stinking mass that holds the humans throwaways
In hopes the human child won’t hear nor see her and report her to the larger human
She wants no harm but she has no choice
She has to hunt from green containers and find wrappers or scraps
Her tail flicks out and catches a pile of containers
It falls to the ground with a clash
The human boy stands there still
His head turns in her direction but he doesn’t scream
Instead he sets off at a run toward one of the big buildings and disappears inside
She watches him go before returning to her rummaging
Moments later she hears something creaking
She turns her head cautiously
In the door of the building the boy had gone into stands one of the larger humans
He holds something she’s learned to fear
It’s long and black and has a thing that makes clicking sounds when pulled
She’s seen what happens when it fires the round things
She immediately turns on her heel and sets off at a run
She hears sharp shots behind her
They barely miss her ankle and hide
She pants from hunger that’s been eating at her for days.
She knows she won’t last long in this world
More footsteps start running behind her joining the last
There are at least three of them now
Her running is beginning to cease with fatigue
The ground begins to feel rough and painful against her paws
Her fur feels heavy
A shot goes off behind her
She feels it graze her hide in blazing heat
She can smell her fur singing
They’re closing in
The forest as burnt and cut up as it is serves as her only escape
She can see it getting closer
Almost there
Another shot, another shout
She feels a sharp burning pain in her side
She yelps
She falls
Her body crashes to the ground just inches from the forests entry
She looks up at the snowy sky and see’s her pup’s faces
She’ll be with them soon
The footsteps grow closer
She remains still
Until her vision fades to black and her pup's call out to her for her to join them.
