Harold listened on respectfully while the salesguy went on and on about the need for these technological products he seemed leary about  purchasing. The guy sensed Harold's hesitation. Rudy the salesguy, needed to kick his speil up a notch to close the deal on this very expensive sale. The salesguy salivated to himself thinking of the commission he'd have coming to him, and how everybody would be cheering him on at the next store meeting.

On the flip here, we have Harold he's listening to the guy- yes, talk about the great investment Harold is making for his family's future. But he isn't quite sold on it just yet, him getting the cellphones for the 2 teenagers in the house to keep open communication between them and himself and his wife regarding their afterschool activities, his wifes Ipad for whatever she needs it for. Oh yes, he remembers she likes to write stories for a website. How intriguing? Not ! Needless to say, all this, taking it in still has him unsure if he's really doing the right thing for them.

Harold fears his family unit will come crashing down to an all time low. They've had a few in the past they've struggled to overcome, just as any family does, he guesses. But with these devices? What will become of them all now? His anxiety starts to set in. They will all disappear into their own cyber worlds. Dinners with incessant chatter at the table will now become solemn affairs. No more hearing the kids argue over who's going to talk first to spill details of their horrid day in school, or ask him for money for some social event, that everyone who's anyone is going to or will be there.

And what of his lovely wife Georgina? That silent voice crept in whispering from behind his shoulder. However will she get thru the monotonous days when she can't seem to focus on her writing? Perhaps Netflix whatever that is he thought to himself. Or download a game of Candy Crush or Fortnight ? Harold was obviously not in the know about such things. He just knew: work, home, eat, shit, shower and shave then bed. Next day repeat process.

He'd feel pretty damn good if he could just get Georgina to say yes to one night of good fucking when the kids were out Friday night. Maybe, buttering her up with this I-pad will get her in the mood.He smiled to himself thinking kindly upon his frigid wife. Ugh, but this was hardly the place to humor such notions.Ok switch gears...kids yes what about the kids?

Will they even remember to call their old pops once in awhile, after they get their new toys in their bloody clutches, he thought bitterly for a moment. No, no let's not let our dark thoughts invade. He fought his thoughts down off successfully in enough time to tell the salesguy Rudy, that YES he's ready to go thru with the sale.

He had more fears aside from these, that lingered in the back burner of his thoughts that hadn't found it's voice. Enough with the over thinking. It was all beginning to give him a massive headache and then with this guy Rudy still talking? Jesus, he already said yes to the bloody purchase. He dug his credit card out of his tattered wallet.and handed it to Rudy to run it thru the little black machine.

Rudy is real happy he notices. Why not, why shouldnt he be? He made a massive sale to the one chump that came in the door looking to buy temporary happiness for the future discord of his family. Rudy don't give a shit.

Harold takes his bag of goodies home to his family to surprise them.

Within time, just as Harold feared and called it upon himself, he starts to see his family unravel. His kids are not calling him to update him on their where abouts as they'd originally promised, but they are always on their phones talking to so and so. They'll say anything just to get their hands on them bloody phones.

He passes their bedrooms on the way to his own and observes his daughter primping in the mirror, taking pics of herself and then giggles to herself as she plops down on her bed to post them online right away to some website. Then her phone rings, she begins to have a muffled conversation with some horny teenage boy named Barry getting off to hearing the promises she's making to make good on when next they meet. She says yes to an invite to a house party come the week-end. He promises her a real good time. Before she hangs up with him, she tells him that she posted those "other pictures" he'd asked her for.

His son? The next party at so and so's house, under age drinking, the whore (he doesn't know who it will be) they plan on pulling a train on, once they get Barry so and so to lead her blindly up into a room where she thinks the two of them will be alone.

Then afterwards they'll go out to ''The Point" the happening spot for teenagers to hang out, to meet up with Brian La Sabe and check out his new car, see if it has enough horse power to race Ritchie Madsen on Sunday night all the way down the coast. Yes, his son has a penchant for fast cars he digs the adrenaline rush that comes from racing. And more than likely, he will be behind the wheel, driving.

He recalls a song he'd heard a lady sing in Spanish once, in a smoky lounge he used to frequent. She sang with such sadness and emotion it moved him to ask her what she was saying in her song when she took a break. She sat him down over drinks shared between the two, and explained it was about a man who loved his children greatly. This father sought  to give his children everything he never had.  One day he had bought his son a fast car only to witness his son lose his life behind the wheel. He mourned greatly this loss, and the lyrics went on to say:

If God gave him an angel without wings, why would he give wings to his son to fly ?

It hit a nerve.

Harold wonders if he hadn't gotten these phones for his loved ones, giving them easier access to making their plans, will they still have found a way to make them? It's not a question he can answer, but he is now aware of where the blame lies for all this disorder in his family.

Harold blanches when he hears these conversations. For over a month, he's quietly observed their family ship starting to sink. He has to think of a credible reason to stop them both from going out. Grounding them wont work, taking their phones won't either. He drags himself to his bedroom where his wife is with her piece of tech heaven in front of her face.

The moment he walks into the room, she turns off her pad in surprise.

"You didn't have to do that on my account" he tells her glancing her way.

Before she can answer, he changes the subject to talk to her about their kids. He knows she's not listening,  not really anyways. She too has become more distant than ever. He quietly watches her from the corner of his eye as he digs thru his clothes drawer for fresh clothes to put on after his shower he intends to take.

She had resumed whatever it was, she was doing on her I-pad. What is just so bloody interesting on that device? He wonders to himself. He had long since dropped the subject of their kids, since all she could answer back to him with was "Uh-hu or mmm hmm". Nor did she notice he'd stopped talking, probably just as well. It only served as a distraction for whatever she was doing.

He knew she couldn't give a fuck what was going on,even  if he paid her to. He sighs and pads off to their restroom. He thinks to himself, he has 5 days to come up with a plan to stop his kids from falling into this trap and making the biggest mistake of their lives. Harold, now in the shower is letting the suds from the shampoo run over his eyes, stinging them. Masking the tears he was shedding of his own.

He had to be more in control, even if it made him the bad guy in all of their eyes. But how?

The next day, Harold calls in to work stating he will be late coming in, but theres an important matter he has to handle that cannot wait. No big deal his boss says, take as much time as you need. Harold ends the call muttering under his breath, I intend to.

He goes back to the shop he bought the cell phones and tablet from, to have a long talk with Rudy. Rudy this time keeps his trap shut and listens to Harold voice his concerns about his family's safety. Rudy comforts Harold and explains there is a way to keep tabs on everyone, even when they don't want to keep in touch. He goes thru all the phones and shows Harold what he's doing while he's doing it, since these kids won't part with their phones, not even to let Harold go thru it and see what they're up to at a moment's notice.

Rudy is placing tracking devices on all their phones. The app he installs into Harold's phone also alerts him to their activity on social media. He can see who they are sending text messages to and whom they are getting them from. And for a small fee extra, he can have those same text exchanges sent to him when they are sent out. While Rudy had to step away from Harold for a few minutes, Harold got into a conversation with two other guys waiting their turn for service. They were talking about a race car convention and what all they were going to have to show the fans that came out, then an actual race at the local speedway.

Soon Harold finished his business with Rudy and waved goodbye to the gentlemen he'd spoken with. So Harold found a remedy to the problem with his kids, now to squash the problem with his wife.

He found out his wife had been having an online affair with a man she'd met. She herself was making plans to meet with her lover. Squashing these plans would be so easy, like taking candy from a kid.

Come Friday night, Harold knew his wife was on her email thru her tablet talking to her lover, confirming their plans for the next day. Harold was in the garage working on her car, checking on its vitals- so he'd told her. His daughter was up in her room no doubtedly going thru her closet looking for something sexy to wear to the party come the next night.

His son however seemed bothered. He joined Harold in the garage as Harold was cleaning his hands with a rag. The boy sat near his dad and began talking about his friends how they planned to do something bad. He asked his father for advice what he should do to stop it from happening with out the friends finding out. That was a tough conversation to have with his son, but they spent the time needed to talk it out.

To lighten up the mood, he told his son he had gotten the family tickets to the race car convention and show later on that evening for Saturday. He told his boy he'd thought about him and realized it had been quite some time since they did anything as a family.

"What about mom? She's not gonna wanna go?" the boy asked. Harold agreed and said "Yeah, I think your mom already has plans of her own, but I'm gonna try and change her mind".

Getting the son to change his mind about the party and going out with his friends later, had been a blessing for Harold. He washed up after he and his son had finished talking, then went to go have a talk with his daughter.

He made plans to be with his kids the whole day, when first they seem to reject the idea, he played with live bait. If his daughter could make it thru the convention show then the race for the 1st part of the day, there would be tickets to a concert he was willing to take her to, she didn't think she'd get to see by her favorite boy band that night. She screamed in joy and hugged her dad close. It was very easy for her to cancel her date.

Now it was time to get serious with her. He called his son into her room and had a talk with her about the boy she was seeing. Her brother asked if she had had intentions of going to that house party. She said she did before dad changed her mind. He left his kids alone to talk.

Two down, one to go.This would be his biggest battle yet. He hoped he'd come out winning. He informed his wife about his plans with the kids for the next night. She didn't seem interested in going. Just as he expected she'd say. He left her be for the rest of the night till it was time for bed, He tried to get amorous with her, but she wasn't having it.

He asked her point blank if she was saving herself for her lover? She tried to deny it and call Harold crazy and tried to avoid talking anymore with him. But he wouldn't let it go.

He told her "Im not dumb Georgina, I know things about you you didn't think I knew. I let you go on as you wished, hoping at some point you'd come back to me.Now you're gonna have to make a decision. Our family, or him? If it's him, I suggest instead of you just going out to meet him, you pack your stuff and go with him, and don't come back Georgina. I'll give you till the end of tomorrow to make up your mind".

He turned on his side, turned out the night light and closed his eyes. The next day everything went according to plan. he managed to save his kids for one day from harm. Hopefully he could reach them and work out something better for them all.

As for his wife, she went ahead with her own plans to meet her lover, still refusing to take Harold serious. But on the way to the seedy motel she had been meeting her lover at, that Harolds money in her purse paid for, she experienced a blown tire that forced her to the curbside.

Her lover went out to pick her up and take her to their meeting spot. She told him about her husband finding out about them and the ultimatum he'd given her. She'd made up her mind, and chose her lover. He in turn burned her with a bit of his own truth. He was married and had no intention of leaving his wife, especially not for her. Then walked out.

While some people denied themselves a happy ending, our Superman of this story Harold, was able to save what was important to him. Maybe one day if the occassion would arise where he was needed elsewhere to save those in distress, he would do his best to accomodate. For now his attention went all to his kids.

Georgina and Harold never reconciled. But still maintained a civil relationship.

The daughter's boyfriend continued with his plans that fateful Saturday night and lured another girl in Harold's daughter's place.

The boys were busted in the act of hurting the young girl they chose, by another boy who called a few football players that were at the party also to drag the punks out into the front yard and beat all three within an inch of their lives.

Ritchie Madsen found some other guys to race that night. He lost control of his vehicle, hit a concrete barrier with so much force the car exploded with him in it on contact. But that's what happens when you live your life too fast.
