As the lightning tore through the sky, it lit up a crudely made hospital. The stench from the garbage heaps around it made it seem much more foreboding than it actually was. A figure dressed in black strode in through the rusty iron gates, making them creak loudly as they swung outward. In her arms, she carried something wrapped in a blanket to protect it from the rain. It walked to the door and pounded on it with it's free hand. Almost immediately, the door was thrown open and a large beam of light fell onto the figure, lighting up her features. The man holding the door open gasped in surprise. "What are you doing here Jewels?" the man hissed. Jewels pulled back her hood with her free hand and then uncovered the bundle in her arms. The man stared at what lay beneath it with confusion. "Why do you have a baby with you?" he asked quietly.
Jewels hesitated for a moment before answering. "He dies Gerald," she whispered, looking down at the baby. Gerald looked confused. "And you care?" he asked incredulously. Jewels glared at him for a moment. "That aside, he needs attention or he'll die." Gerald hesitated again before opening his door for her to enter. "Bring him in," he said. "This is a hospital after all." Jewels smirked at him and stepped past him into the dimly lit hospital. "This isn't the best hospital I've been in," Jewels remarked. Gerald came to stand by her. "I have to agree with you there, but how nice can a place look when it's surrounded by heaps of garbage?" Jewels laughed. "Don't feel too bad about it," she said. "The world now is covered in garbage." "Just the towns," Gerald said quietly, running his fingers through his graying hair. Jewels watched him with some interest. "Your still as handsome as you used to be..." she said, almost to herself. Gerald flushed and cleared his throat. "Follow me," he said, striding further into the hospital.
They walked down the hallway, ignoring the cries of the injure that floated out from some of the rooms. "Shouldn't you do something about them?" Jewels asked, unnerved. Gerald looked over his shoulder and smiled wryly. "I've done what I can but with the limited access to medicine and tools that I have can't relieve too much of their pain." he sounded bitter about this fact. Jewels walked behind him in silence for a moment before speaking again. "are there no rooms available here?" she asked. "The amount of injured people has risen drastically in the past few months." Gerald said. "But to cause so much pain, the culprit can't be...human," Jewels said, watching Gerald for a reaction. He just continued walking. "I hope your not suggesting that you believe in that fairy tale nonsense," he said coolly. Jewels laughed. "Its easy to call something nonsense if you've no reason to believe but I've seen things you wouldn't believe." Gerald ignored her and kept walking, leading her up a staircase.
"I'll have to tend to the child in my office," Gerald explained as he stepped into yet another hallway. "Please tell me that your office is just down the hallway. Gerald stopped, turned towards her,and smiles. Actually we're already here." He pushed open a door on his left and stepped through. "You see,if someone were to come looking for me, they'd think my office was down the hall. So I made the very first room on my right my office," he said as Jewels stepped into his room. He went over and cleared everything off his desk which wasn't much, just a couple of scrolls and writing tools. "Lay him here," Gerald commanded. Jewels set the baby down on the table and let Gerald inspect him. The baby was deathly pale and still as he was examined. It took Gerald no more than a minute to find out what was wrong with him. He stepped back and looked at Jewels. "The baby is dead Jewels," he said.
Jewels did not appear surprised by his conclusion at all. She then surprised Gerald. "I knew that Gerald," she said calmly. "I came to you wondering if you could revive him." Gerald stared at her disbelievingly. "You knew this child was dead?" he asked, shaking with rage. "Well of course," she replied casually. "Then why did you bring him here?!" he shouted at her. Jewels shrugged. "I already told you why." "No one can revive the dead," he whispered, staring at the floor. "That's too bad," she said, coming to stand by the baby and placing her hand on it's forehead. "I'd placed much onto this child's life." She picked the bundle up and walked over to the garbage chute. "What are you doing?" Gerald asked her. She turned and smiled cynically. "The child is of no use to me and seeing how he's dead, he's basically garbage." With that, she turned, pulled open the chute, and dumped the baby inside of it.
Reina was piling up trash outside of the hospital when she heard something coming down the garbage chute. "I wonder what it is now?" she thought to herself bitterly. She watched as a bundle came out of the chute and landed at her feet. Reina bent over and peeled back the blanket, unveiling the dead baby boy beneath it. "Oh no," Reina thought kneeling. She looked at the baby. Wondering who would do something like this. The baby looked like he'd been perfectly healthy before his untimely death. Reina marveled at his patch of brown hair. A terrible feeling descended onto her at that moment. She regretted that she hadn't got the chance to know this baby before it had died. Reina was filled with a love for the baby then as she went to rub its cheek, but then something happened. As her hand touched the baby's cheek, it was as if all her energy had been sapped, leaving her feeling clammy and cold. She was about to jump up and leave when she looked down at the baby and watched him open his hazel eyes.
Reina slowly picked up the baby and stared at it. His skin looked like it had never been dead. She put a hand to the baby's cheek and found that it wasn't cold at all. Reina stared at the baby again, wondering what had just happened. Lightning flashed through the sky again but the rain had let up a while ago. Reina expected the baby to cry but instead he looked at her as if questioning her. "I'll name you Angel," she said to the baby, holding out her finger for the baby to take. Angel looked at her and then slowly grabbed her finger and giggled. Reina laughed and then looked around. "What if person that threw him away is still here?" she thought. She hugged the baby to her chest and fled towards the workers den. Angel cooed all the way there. Suddenly Reina didn't think the day was that bad after all.
