Prologue

Monday, 8th December 2014

Needed a break. Have just gotten in but Monday morning warrants an immediate break. At regular premiere spot beside water cooler, pretending to jot down the prep notes for this morning’s seminar on dealing with sexual harassment in the work place. Cannot believe I have to speak about sexual harassment in the work place. At 9:00. In the morning. And I’m still hung over. Uggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!

“Cassandra? Cassandra???”

The monotone voice entered the HR department, followed imposingly by the strongest scent of lavender ever to be harnessed from a bottle. Cassie snapped her journal shut and sat up straight, peeking over the water cooler to see the curly blonde hair bouncing above the cubicle walls. She flattened herself back against the wall, counted to ten under her breathe, paused, and stood up.

“Hello Becky” she mumbled, plastering on her “always-happy-to-help” signature smile as she appeared from behind the corner wall. It was practically in HR recruitment criteria – faux smile please! Becky stood there in a variety of pastel shades that could only be considered an assault to the eyes, smacking on some gum, and faux smiled right back at her.

“Cassandra” she drawled, before snapping out her phone and tapping on it with frightening long nails, manicured to perfection. Cassie quickly brought her hands behind her back, nail beds an endless tragedy.

“What’s up Becks” she prompted, swaying slightly awkwardly back and forth, biting on her lip. The woman was considerably shorter than her by a good few inches, yet Cassie always felt small in front of her somehow and she considered this thought uncomfortably while Becky droned on about today’s itinerary.

“So, as you know, we’re going to be filming the seminar today so we can distribute it amongst interns and trainees as well. Apparently some incident in one of the copy rooms means we have to “re-educate them” ” – she made half hearted air quotations with her pincer nails- “IT will be down in the conference room to set up the multimedia for you. The company video will be set up so you literally just have to talk about everything that was mentioned in the handbook”

Cassie blinked hard. “The handbook?”

“On how to deliver the seminar? I’m sure I gave it to you last week. It’s got all the instructions about what to say and do and how to answer questions and...”

Cassie’s mind wandered away as she began to distinctly remember the handbook. Ah yes, the handbook. An ugly bulky stack of paper, wire rimmed, with the word’s SEXUAL HARASSMENT bold and blatant on the cover, seminar just barely fitting in beneath them. It had been dumped on her desk last Wednesday and she’d given it a brief flick before stuffing it in her briefcase, mentally noting to herself to attend to it over the weekend.

It hadn’t left her briefcase since.

“Oh! The HANDBOOK!” she blurted out awkwardly, cutting Becky off mid way, nodding a little hysterically. “Yeah! The handbook! Oh yeah. Yeah. Just the kinda light reading for a weekend. Good stuff”

Becky was looking at her as if she’d just swallowed a live fish but managed to regain her composure and shrug.

“Great. Then it should be a breeze. Besides, it’s only going to be upper management and just a few of the underling departments. Everyone else will just watch the recording.”

“That sounds fab!” Cassie replied enthusiastically, wanting to slap herself immediately. Becky didn’t even have the decency to look confused this time.

“So just be at the conference room at 9:30. I know we scheduled for 9:00 but the board wants to sit on this too. Considering it’ll be recorded they thought employees might take it more seriously if they saw their own bosses participating. Some bogus story like that”

“Wait. The board’s sitting in on this???” Her heart was suddenly up in her throat and her stomach had sunk into a bottomless void. The board of directors wanted to watch HER give a seminar on sexual harassment. In- she chanced a glance at the clock behind Becky’s head- 45 minutes. The urge to burst into fresh tears was overwhelming.

“Yes. Mr. Murdoch called in this morning. He, Douglas and O’Hare are gonna be in on it soon as they get back from breakfast. And director Hunter too. Apparently he doesn’t want his department messing up under any circumstances so he’s been sitting in on all of HR’s seminars”

If Cassie hadn’t been hyperventilating before she was sure about to start right now and she gripped her journal tight, digging her nails in, trying to get a hold on herself. It was one thing to present this seminar in front of the board members. Imposing and authoritative as they were, they were pretty much oblivious to average employee interactions and she could have possibly bullshitted her way through the presentation and questions on a streak of common sense.

But the bloody director of HR? Her boss? Her official boss who had the ability to call her out right there and then and fire her on the spot? The very thought made her want to throw up right there on Becky’s baby pink kitten heels. Instead, she swallowed hard and worked on keeping her smile up.

“Thanks Becks. I’ll start getting ready then, shall I?”

That was enough for the assistant to turn on her heel and stalk off without a second glance, leaving Cassie to slink off to her hiding place beside the water cooler. She rested her head back against the wall, counted to ten in her head, paused, thought about Mr. Hunter explicitly humiliating her in the conference room and throwing a pink slip at her face, and made a beeline for her briefcase.
