“Be good for Aunt Jimmy, okay?” Judy smiled as she kissed Danny and Lily good-bye.

Gathering little Jim into her arms, she nuzzled her infant son’s soft, fragrant skin before kissing his smooth cheek while her husband Gene knelt and gathered the older two kids in his arms for a ferocious hug. He rose to plant a kiss of his own on the baby’s head as Judy’s sister chuckled and held out her arms.

“C’mon you two, you asked for a weekend away,” she laughed.

Gene laughed in response while Judy blushed.

“I know,” she replied, “but now that we’re going, it’s harder.”

“It’s been a while,” Gene mused, “I think we think in terms of volume these days.”

“Well, it’s time to think of only two,” Jimmy said firmly.

Gene put his arm around Judy’s shoulders as she nodded. She knew that she needed alone time with her husband. What made their marriage successful is that they always made their time together and their passion for each other a premium. It allowed them to be devoted parents while respecting the importance of their partnership. Judy and Gene were friends and lovers first, and preserving that made their family stronger.

Gene planted a kiss on his wife’s temple and grinned, “We will, but we’ll be back for the game on Sunday afternoon. Promise, Danny.”

Judy nodded vigorously in agreement; their eldest son beamed happily and propelled himself into his parents for another hug. Gene patted his back before leaning over to ruffle Lily’s riotous curls one more time.

“I promise we’ll get those yummy hot dogs, Monkey,” he murmured.

Lily followed Danny in for a hug. She was very much a Daddy’s girl. Danny pulled his sister back and said in a brave voice,

“Have fun, Mom. Don’t forget our catch on Sunday, Dad.”

“We won’t. Love you guys,” Gene said, pulling Judy out of the door before she crumbled.

They climbed into the car. Gene held Judy’s hand as they drove away. They grinned at each other like two teenagers getting away with something. Squeezing his wife’s fingers, he sighed happily as they pulled onto the main road and headed toward the beach.

“You’re terrific,” he said.

“I know,” she giggled in reply, “but you can always tell me why.”

“Because you love our little shack as much as I do. It’s not fancy, but we can get away and still be close to home.”

Their little “shack” was the end cabin of the motel where they first made love. Basically furnished, it had none of the amenities that they were used to, but they ignored the rough towels, lack of room service and tiny cakes of soap because the place was filled with so many lovely memories of their falling in love. It was the one place where they could throw the doors open to let the sea winds in while they made love. They could swim and cavort on the beach unrecognized and hang out at the honky-tonk beach bar, drinking beer and sharing the best French fries they’d ever eaten.
