Pit-Stop

“Not being able to have something for which you desperately want can be a painful thing. Not being able to have something, even for a moment for which you desperately lust after, is something else entirely.”

M.J Corbett

Faith was just like any other young woman. She was just like any other post graduate of her age too, in that she longed for excitement!

Ever since her University graduation had gone to plan, she felt as if she needed to not only get away from it all, but to find that buzz – if you will.

She was desperate to seek out that one last thrill and boy was she determined.

University was tough and the past five years had taken their toll on her senses. Just like a prisoner, Faith had been counting down the days until her final release - her escape, if you will.

At the end of every day she`d flick open her imaginary calendar, put a large green cross on that particular square, and officially pencil it in as done.

With that knowledge wedged firmly in her mind she found it easier to sleep at night. More sleep meant better concentration and better concentration, ultimately, meant better grades.

No sooner had she started to tick off all those big green crosses, she found herself teetering at the edge of her final year and, without warning, the exit came into view . . .

. . . She was free!

The open road stared her in the face. The V8 engine of her ageing Mustang hammered away beneath her body, sending vibrations through her entire torso - the pistons provoking unwanted anarchy within her thoughts.

White lines blurred into one, long, glimmering strip against the blackening asphalt underfoot as the smell of petrol fumes would reawaken her senses - keeping her eyes loosely fixated on the journey ahead.

Her hand clasped the wheel as the cooling breeze lapped loosely around her neck. She would stare at distant farm houses in admiration as they appeared to slide gracefully from left to right without warning, just as distant clouds teased their way across the morning sky like a layer of silk through fog.

The heavens were as legally blue and clear as they could be and the air emitted its usual summer notes that teased the senses and warped the mind.

In the distance she could see a small Diner and decided to pull in to feed her Mustang - the ten gallons of juice for which it had been begging her for during the past sixteen miles.

The sign read `Danny`s Diner`- it`s reddish paintwork slapped against the pale blue backdrop. The gloss smelt fresh and new, whilst the metallic retainers of the heavy duty chains glimmered in the sun – almost as if to show off their newness and, ultimately, appeal to all new customers.

The Diner itself looked and smelt fairly modern. New tables adorned the floor and fresh flowers littered the window sills. The only thing missing were the people.

Faith remembered what her friends had told her about “Stopping off at strange new places” but she hardly had a choice now, did she? She could`ve gone on further but would`ve had to stop eventually, seeing as her own fuel levels were dangerously close to those of her car.

`Can I help you Ma-am?` Whispered a voice from across the room.

`Err . . . Me?` She replied – her tone full of hesitation and concern.

A hunky-looking, young male emerged from behind the counter with a warming smile,

`I`m mighty sorry if I scared you but you`re in the wrong part, you must be looking for the garage attendant I take it?`

Faith blushed and suddenly became shy – shy like the day she first attended University.

I was just wondering if you needed anything? – The name`s Adam by the way,` He said on approach.

`Oh, ` she replied, `Yeah, sorry I was just wondering if you could fill me . . . err,` she coughed as her skin reddened, `I mean, could I get a fill up here please?`

Adam chuckled as her skin shone like a new dawn in front of his very eyes.

`Sure I can fill you up!` He said, walking past - sliding the bolt home on the door.

As he turned to face her once again their eyes locked,

`So . . . ` He said warmly, as his smile melted her very soul,

`What`ll it be?`
