Her screams cut the air with a deadly chill as terror and pain escaped her. Even the damp mossy walls couldn't muffle the excruciating pain she was releasing from her lungs. He couldn't hear it, he was too focused, only the sound of her heart was palpable to him.
This had to work, they needed it to work. The experiment had failed for the last six months and they had lost too many in that time. Surely another death of their own would cripple them. But with every passing month they would lose at least one, and only a dozen or so of them were left.
They desperately needed the protection that this could give them, but it has yet to come to fruition. None of the subjects had survived. Regardless of their sex or of their strength, none could seem to survive the shredding.
This mere girl held promise though.
Her heart was still beating, he could hear it. The rapid fluttering of a frightened heart was easily distinguishable over the growls and tearing that was enveloping the room. He could not hear any of it, only the thunderous pounding the blood made as it crashed into the walls of each chamber in her heart. Her body was eager to send her the life source she so desperately needed to survive this.
His own heart was racing. It was finally going to work. The protection, the leverage, the peace she would finally bring to them. He could practically taste it on his tongue. Leanore reigned in the animals as he stepped into the cold cell. All that was left was his bite. They had never gotten to this step before and now that he was here it seemed surreal.
The girl’s blonde hair was matted in thick clumps of blood. Her limbs were pointing in all the wrong directions. And her bones were exposed to the open night air. But she was still breathing, her foot was still twitching. But all of it seemed to slow as he stepped towards her. Her adrenaline was stopping, her heart was slowing, her eyes were muting. She was dying and he knew it. He jumped on top of her and let his teeth sink into every layer of her shoulder. Repeatedly he bit into her until he could feel the pressure of her bones grinding against his teeth.
This couldn't be happening, he was so close, everything would be fixed.
The screams, the shouts, the sound of furniture breaking was distant to him. Only chaos and confusion was ringing in his head. The pressures, the losses, the deaths, were all encompassing him, bearing all their weight down onto him. He murdered so many for no result. He excruciatingly tortured countless people looking for hope, yet receiving nothing but guilt. All of their bodies were surrounding him, taunting him of his failures, with the deaths that would continue because of him, taunting him with the enormous amounts of grief he has bestowed upon so many innocent families. They would not stop, there were too many, he couldn't escape them.
He couldn't take it anymore he grabbed the girl’s body and threw it against the mossy stone wall as hard as he could. Her body made a crunch as it hit the wall and then the floor. He slowly stood, panting, stilling himself. He hadn't heard Leanore creep into the doorway.
"Get another one!"
Her contemptuous words struck him like a knife. He slumped against the wall and released a powerful yell that could only be described as hatred and grief.
Tears slowly stained his face as he looked down into the empty blue eyes of the young mutilated girl "Not another one..."
