Darkness within.

Pain...cold dirt beneath me...darkness consumes me again.
I’m running, running so fast through the dark forest, the trees are nothing but a blur to my wide terrified eyes, My chest feels as though it will explode any second as I fight for breath, when I literally can run no longer I collapse to the floor in a heap grabbing handfuls of dirt in the palms of my hands, as I weep uncontrollably I stop only to throw up from so much running before weeping again, until I fall asleep on the cold dirt filled floor of the forest.

Waking up the next morning it took me a moment to realise why I was so cold, and why my whole body ached and burned as though I had been in a train wreck. My eyes burned and felt sore from hours of crying as I sat up and took in my surroundings. I was in a forest, rows and rows of trees that seemed to stretch out forever.
That's when I felt my heart constrict and a lump rise in my throat, I felt completely heartbroken but I couldn't for the life of me remember why. Thinking about it I couldn't actually remember much of anything, I didn't know if I had a job, a family or even if I had a home. But on the other hand I could remember having a steak for dinner at a restaurant last night, and the name of the restaurant because I remember thinking “bored lizard?” What a ridiculous name for a restaurant. The last thing I remember comes in snippets of flashbacks that have me gasping for breath afterwards, trees and bushes rushing past me through a windscreen of what I assume must have been a car, a deer staring straight at me as it stood in the middle of a road before I swerved out of its way before darkness consumes me.
But one thing that remains absolutely crystal clear in my mind and feels me with absolute terror are the dark shadows that I had been running from before collapsing onto the floor and into unconsciousness.

I cannot remember how I came upon them or how or why I had started to run in terror, all I know is that they were unmissable in the black of night, because they were darker then night itself, and were eight feet tall with what looked to be the longest claws id ever seen, but what stands out most is the absolute stench of pure evil that radiated off of them and the feeling that they were looking right through to your Very soul though I don't recall seeing their eyes.

When I finally got myself together, I walked through the forest with the sun shining down and was almost enjoying the peace of it until I heard a crack by my right side. I stopped and looked around for some sign of life, animal or human, but there was nothing so I continued on.
Ten minutes later I heard that sound again and as soon as I stopped so did the noise, something was following me. Surely those shadow creatures wouldn't be out in broad daylight would they? I heard a familiar hiss and knew I was wrong, they were here.

I ran and ran until eventually I came to a clearing. Making my way across the road I headed for the petrol station and made My way inside.
It was eerily quiet inside and no one was at the desk. I called out but there was no answer. Strange. I wanted to check around the place for a phone but daren't just in case someone was here, I mean there had to be, why would anyone leave a shop open unattended? I almost thought about just walking myself back to some civilisation when I heard a gurgling sound, and a thump behind the closed door that said staff only. That was it, I was going to see what was going on, so I bravely tried to walk around the desk and through the door.
As soon as I was in I heard the gurgling noise even more louder and rushed to another room where it was coming from. Boxes in the other room blocked my view so I was going to have to go in.

Peeking around the boxes I held in my gasp of terror. I saw a lady on the floor. The gurgling noise was the blood gushing from her mouth and throat, her throat had been slit and her arm was at an unnatural angle, lifeless by her side, while her other hand tried to hold her throat in an effortless attempt to stem the bleeding.
She tried to speak but her tongue had been removed. Before I could move towards her though, she suddenly became unnaturally still and looked glassy eyed...she was dead.

I was going to go over to her when I suddenly saw them...the shadows were crouched over her slashing and god knows what else, because as soon as I heard that disturbing, haunting, high pitched wailing sound I ran, and kept running until I could run no more.

I didn't sleep that day or night, I just kept moving with only a bottle of water I had grabbed quickly to keep me going.

After what must have been at least four hours of walking, I finally started to come across civilisation again. First some petrol stations with people actually at the desk this time, and then more shops and some houses, until I was full blown in the middle of a busy city.
I learnt from asking a passerby that I was in London, one of the biggest cities in England.
I took out a wallet from my pocket that had been on me when I woke, so I assumed it must have been mine and took it out to use the cash inside to pay for the nearest and cheapest I might add, hotel I could find.
I got the best sleep I'd had in days, and as soon as I woke up the next day I showered and dressed in some cheap clothes I'd bought and finally felt refreshed.
Leaving the hotel I headed out to the nearest cafe and got some breakfast, and decided how I was going to find out where I came from and what exactly happened. Taken out My wallet, I took the bank card and read what little information there was. Apparently my name was Michael Cain, well at least I knew my name now I guess.
Heading to a library I hit my name into their computer system and didn't really expect to find much but was surprised when my face appeared on a Facebook website. Clicking onto it I was lucky enough it wasn't set to privacy so I could see photos and posts and so on. By chance I saw that I lived in the big city London, in a house with two dogs, and the biggest shock of all... A wife.
