I awaken from a deep sleep, startled by the dream I was just having. In my dream, a crazed man was chasing me. Sweat beading down my face as I look desperately into the eyes of someone I never thought I’d be with. He looked at me strangely and with concern written all over his face. I gave him a reassuring smile and he smiled back and gave me a warm, passionate kiss.
He had to be without a doubt, the best kisser I’d ever had. He still wore a look of concern as if he thought I was hiding something. He then released the thought and looked at me with desperate, wanting eyes. He moved towards me, his dick throbbing against my ass, and says my name with such passion. “Khyria”, he says, “I need you; I want you so bad.” I whisper back to him, “Mikah, I need you too, but right now, I’m a little shaken up. I just… I’m just… Never mind.” Mikah tries to comfort me, asking, pleading for me to tell him what’s wrong, but I just tell him “Nothing”.
He tells me I’m lying, that it is written all over my face and he can see it in my eyes, but I just can’t tell him what’s going on in my mind. I force out a smile, that I know is a lie, and he is reassured. He tells me he’ll just hold me tonight and that everything will be ok. We fall asleep in each other’s arms with me waking up every few minutes, until he has to leave and go home to change for work. I pretend to be asleep while he dresses and once he finishes, he gives me a peck on the lips and leaves.

I call in to my job at the law firm that I started, and tell my assistant that I have an emergency that I have to tend to today and that I will see her tomorrow. I call my girl Destini, and told her that I needed to go shopping. She told me to give her an hour to show her face at her job of five years, as writer and production assistant for Screen Gems Studios. We spent the day laughing, talking, and shopping. I could tell she knew something was wrong by the way, she kept looking at me, but Dee being Dee, just didn’t pressure me about it. She just kept doing what she was doing and figured that I would tell her when I got ready. Little did she know I didn’t plan on telling her, or anyone else for that matter. I just planned on keeping itall to myself. So we went on with our shopping, and then went back to my house for a girl’s night in.
We watched movies while I cooked. I made some greens, ox tails, rice and gravy, mac and cheese, okra, cucumbers and onions, and for dessert, Dee baked a delicious German Chocolate Cake. It was almost as good as my grandma’s and mine. After we ate, we watched another movie, and later decided to hit up Club Crunk and see what was goin on down there. We got there and we just had a good ass time. There were men coming up to us right and left. I got at least ten numbers, none of which I planned to call. We got back to my house in Lithonia and went to sleep. I tossed and turned all night because of another dream that was all too real.
When I woke up the next morning, Dee was standing over me, just staring, looking scared and worried at the same time. She asked me what I was dreaming about, and I gave her a crazy look. She looked at me and said, “Don’t fuck wit me Khy, the way you were tossing, and turning, and yelling in your sleep, I know something is wrong, please just tell me what’s wrong”. Now I hate lying to my girl, but there are some things I will never tell, and this was one of them. So I just turned my head and told her, “Nothing.” Well obviously that wasn’t what she wanted to hear because she got mad and walked back and forth around the house shaking her head and cussing to herself. Dee left that morning without eating or telling me bye, she must have been more upset than I thought.
I walked into work not caring about my work. My mind kept wandering back to that dream I had the previous night. I knew one thing, I had to watch my back, because those dreams were getting too real.

The next few days, I didn’t hear from Dee, so I decided to call her and clear the air between us. We’ve been friends since first grade and I didn’t want it to end over something so juvenile. I called her and asked her to meet me at ‘Black Dekalb Mall’, as I like to call it, in the food court so that we could talk. When she showed up, she didn’t look like herself, despite what went on just days before. I looked at her before I apologized for not telling her what was going on a few days ago at my house. She told me she understood, grabbed my hand, and gave me a big sisterly hug right in the middle of the food court.
When I hugged her I could feel her tremble and she hugged me as if she was afraid she would never see me again. I asked her what was wrong and she burst into tears, which surprised me because neither of us were the crying type. I asked her what was wrong again, but she just kept crying. When I finally got her to calm down, she was able to tell me what was going on. She told me that Xzayvier was shot by three dudes he was in a gang with. Xzayvier is Dee’s younger brother; we call him Zay for short. “What?!” I said. “I didn’t even know he was in a gang.” “None of us did”, Dee replied. “We got a call last night from the police saying that he was rushed to Grady Hospital, and then he was flown to Piedmont Hospital. I asked her why she didn’t tell me this when I called. She answered by saying, “Zay may be my little brother, but you’re my sister too, and I knew we needed to fix what was going on between us. And I really need you to be with me when I go see him, to help me get through it. Mom and Dad already called, they wanted me to let you know that you need to make sure you’re with me when I go to the hospital to see our little brother.

Within seconds of Dee telling me everything that was going on, my white Old Navy tank top, blue jean skirt, and air force ones
wearing ass was running toward the exit with Dee’s blue Rocawear
Jogging suit and white and blue number 13 Jordan’s wearing butt, two steps behind me. We hopped in my midnight blue, 2009, Dodge Charger, and hit the freeway. I did ninety mph, until we pulled up at Piedmont fifteen minutes later. When we found Dee’s mom and dad, Mr. Terrance Washington and Mrs. Mackenzie Washington standing outside of Zay’s hospital room, they looked as if they had had a rough day. We simultaneously asked what had happened with Zay, and they said he was shot four times in the chest. They told us that one bullet got really close to his heart, while another got really close to his lungs, both of which only missed the organs by about one inch. The doctor said that he was stable and should be ok. They also told us that we should go in to see him but he wasn’t responsive.
As Dee approached the door, I grabbed her hand and pulled her back away from the door. I apologized to Mama and Daddy Washington and they told me it was ok and to just take my time. About five minutes later we approached the door again and walked in. When I saw Zay hooked up to all those machines and all the needles, I had to fight back tears. In my mind, I just kept saying, “I have to be strong for Dee, I have to be strong for Dee.” We sat and talked to Zay for about an hour, then we prayed and left so that our parents could go back in before visiting hours were over.
