Scanning the ground I could see nothing but smoke and ash among the dead. The aftermath of yet another battle, my men dead checked as I scanned the horizon, the harsh sun was rising which would soon push us all indoors so that we didn’t burn.

“Kylin, the sun” my right hand Morin said as he lifted the helmet up so his face was exposed, the dirt, blood and grime covered his face, I assumed mine looked similar if not worse due to the fact my  helmet was thrown off some time ago in the battle.

“I know, get the men inside”

“Going exploring again?” Morin asked as he wiped the blade of his sword with a rag

“I have not lost hope that there is a better land out there, our land is ash we will perish if we don’t do something” I said but I could already see I had lost Morin’s interest, him along with most of the kingdom believed there was nowhere else beyond the ash, that all the lands were burnt and in ruin. Scanning the horizon, the sun turning the sky an angry orange, I knew my exploring would have to wait until the shade of night fell, being a night walker had its disadvantages.

Grabbing the basket that sat by the door I followed the little path that would go into the woods, I stopped in my tracks spotting one of my sisters, she was with a tree elf, he grinned his blonde hair blowing in the breeze and she was giggling, if Iris saw what she was doing it would be an argument that even the mountains would hear and groan.

“Calla” I whispered just loud enough to alert her that someone was there, leaning towards the elf he dipped his head down brushing a kiss across her lush lips.

“Hello Freesia, spying are we?” she asked heading towards me. She was the second born, all white hair that seemed to float to her hips and eyes so gold you could get lost in them forever if you looked too long.

“no sister, I spotted you, Iris is going to be coming this way shortly with Rose” I explained

“ah I see my sister, protecting me from the evil one are you?” she teased

“as you wish, next time I shall let her catch you with the elf” with the mention of him she blushed

“he is dreamy, im sure even she would see that” she joked

“doubtful” I said, we all knew about Iris and her great and last love, the sea nymph. He had swept her off her feet and then left her at the altar.

Following the path into the woods, I sighed feeling at home, the woods had always had this effect on me, it just felt right like I belonged within it.

I started filling my basket with the ruby berries that grew low to the ground on small bushes, they were hard for others to find but I always seemed to be able to spot the extraordinary little fruits.

“hello Miss Freesia, how are you today” I spun around to catch my oldest and most dear friend sitting on a mossy log.

“wonderful as ever Theo, what brings you this far into the woods?” I asked as normally he stuck around the ocean where he lived, he was a sea shifter, never able to be on land very long before he longed for the water.

“as it seems I have been troubled” he said pulling some stray moss off a twig

“what on earth would you be troubled about” I asked setting my basket down and sitting next to him on the large log

“nothing in particular, I have heard rumbling from the mountains and I fear that something will be coming over them, my father says I have been listening too much to my grandmother, that I shouldn’t be taking what an old seeker has to say to heart, but I have not seen my dear grandmother for a while now, this is coming from my own heart, darkness is seeping in” he spoke sending shivers over my skin, gooseflesh following.

“what darkness, how do you know?” I asked taking his hand in mine. Shifting his gaze to mine, his solid black eyes looking back at me

“Freesia, that’s it, I don’t know exactly, it seems to be little things”

“such as?” I pushed, I wanted to know, I wanted to know if my sisters and I had to leave our home again.

“the water seems hotter, the woods seem to be a bit less green and the birds are flying away from the mountains”

“do you think it will be like the last time?” I asked shivering at the memory that hit me.

“Grab freesia! My mother screamed at my sister Iris who already had both our other sisters

“mama” I cried holding the blanket that was wrapped around me to protect me from the flames that were crawling their way over our walls.

“take them into the woods Iris, protect them, don’t let the darkness catch you” my mama said as she shoved us out the door, Iris held me tightly as we ran into the night towards the woods, away from her as she held the red patch on her stomach, I watched as she sat down slowly on the stairs to our house, her hand trembling as she clutched her stomach and her eyes never leaving mine as she became smaller and smaller.

The memory faded, was the only thing I really could remember of my mother. Her death.
