His soul was restless. He had roamed for thousands of years, and yet, he still felt inadequate- useless. He felt as if his time here was a complete waste, down to every last second. And although he had witnessed many miracles and scenes of remarkable beauty, the sad truth was he had noone to share them with, and so they dulled in comparison to what they should have been.

He had traveled all over the world and gained much knoweldge in his many years. But the wiser he got, the sadder he grew. In his heart, he knew he would never find someone to spend eternity with, and yet, he refused to admit that he feared he would be alone until he met his end. So he persisted. He knew a monster like him could never have a soulmate out there in the world, awaiting their destiny together. It couldn't be. Noone would ever understand him, nor accept him. Noone would ever love him once they knew what he was.

He didn't even know if he had a soul, let alone a heart. But he pained every day, so he must be more man than monster. He had contemplated over all of this for a long time, never coming to a conclusion. He was wise, but even he didn't understand the spirituality of what he was. He didn't know what his immortality would cost him in the end. He just wished he had someone to share the burden with. Someone who, ironically enough, would put his worries to bed and comfort his tortured heart. Although he was a powerful beast, seldom afraid of the small troubles of the world, he craved the gentle touch of a woman. He wanted someone to protect and cherish, someone who could turn to him for anything and know he wouldn't turn her away. He wanted someone he didn't have to hide in front of and worry rather his weaknesses shown through. Because without this person, he would be weak. So weak that the thought of ending it all crossed his mind every day.

He could do it. There was no question about that. He merely hesitated because he was unsure about what would follow. Surely anything would be better than his constant brooding; this gnawing feeling of abandonment. He stared out into the dark from where he perched on his balcony, the cool night air lifting his hair and caressing his face and neck. He sighed, unable to escape the seeping depression. He looked down, like a king from his kingdom, and wondered if the jump would kill him. Before he could think about what he was doing, he climbed to the edge and stood perfectly still, letting the wind ruffle his hair, content for this small comfort to be the last thing he took in. As he prepared to step off, a scream tore through the air, out of nowhere.

"Stop!" It was the voice of a woman, somehow piercing through the fog that now clouded his judgement. He quickly reconized that she was speaking to him through telepathy, something he often did without realizing it. Had he been broadcasting his thoughts aloud without noticing it? How much had she heard?
