It was noon and I was sitting in science class with my head on my arm, slightly dozing. Snap!

"Ms. Crest! Am I boring you?" All of a sudden, Mr. Borax hits my desk hard with his wooden ruler, bolting me out of my seat and sending a defining crack echoing throughout the classroom. I looked up at him, startled, trying to find the words to say to answer him, but my fuzzy head disagreed, decided to remain in utter chaos instead. Before waiting for a response, he pointed at the seat with his ruler, "Sit back down and pay attention." Gladly, I sat, feeling everyone's eyes staring at my backside, my face a dark red. I tried to ignore the snickering I heard from the back.

After class, I met up with my best friend, Ashton Levi. She was everything I wasn't: Tall, bronze, and beautiful. She easily won every eye in a mile radius. I'm not jealous. I know I don't stand a chance against her, and sometimes I'm grateful that I don't have to deal with all the admiration and bothersome stares. I wouldn't know where to turn. At 5'5, I'm about 2 feet shorter than her, with long red hair and green eyes. Freckles adorn my face like stars in the night sky... You could probably count out constellations.

We get our lunch and then sit at our regular table. Joel, Jake, and Marie are there. Jake is Ashton's boyfriend, and Marie and Joel are just close friends to all of us. You could call us the breakfast club... but then I'd punch you in the face because I hate that movie. Ashton kisses Jake before sitting down to munch on her pizza. I pick up mine, sniffing it before taking a bite.

"Luna, I heard about your bashing in science," Marie says between bites of salad.

"How did you hear about that?" It literally just happened.

"I mean I heard it. Mr. Borox screamed out your name, and there's no escaping the sound of that ruler. Angels in Heaven can hear it. Plus, my math class was right next door... " She looked at me questionable, waiting for me to explain myself.

"I didn't sleep well last night... and science is my most boring subject. I'm not gonna need to know how many electrons and protons are in an atom when I'm forty years old and raising kids." Joel looks up from his sandwhich, turkey on rye today, and snorts at my remark.

"Nice to know you're going to make something of yourself, Luna."

"I'm just being honest," I say, laughing with him.

"Can I babysit them?", Ashton asks, pausing in her sweet devotion to cram her tongue down Jake's mouth.

"Wont you be busy with you own?" Marie asks, eyeing a cheery tomato that bravely made its way unto her fork.

"Are you crazy? I don't want any brats running around my house, tearing up my things. And neither does Jake, do you, baby?" She looks at him questionably. He shakes his head, taking her lips in his again as the rest of us look on. I think he would say anything to make her happy.

"What about you, Joel? Any babies in your future?" I caught him with a mouthful and he took a few minutes to chew and swallow before answering.

"Maybe one day... after I make my contribution to the world." He said this matter-of-factly, and I had no doubt he meant it. Joel was smart, and maybe if I hadn't have known him since fourth grade, I would ask him out. But once you see a kid pick his nose and eat it, it changes their image forever.

"Well, I'm defiantly going to have children one day," Marie spoke up. "Wouldn't twins be adorable?"

Before she could get a response, a loud bang brought everyone's attention to the center of the cafeteria, where two girls were standing, one brunette and one blonde. The tray the brunette had been holding was on the ground, barely missing the blonde that was staring back at her with a look of shock and unmistakable fear.

"Say something else about the way I live my life and next time, that tray will be embedded in your skull!" This was the brunette girl talking, her hair streaming behind her, like an invisible wind blew at it. It added to the effect of her rage, making her look fiercely beautiful. The blonde girl mumbled something and ran off before anymore threats could be yelled. After that, a teacher walked up and escorted her to the principal's office. I watched her as she went, a smug look on her face. For an instant, our eyes locked; mine a curious gaze, her's a look of triumph. She smiled and looked away.

"What was that about?" I asked, referring to the tray incident. My friends looked at me like I was stupid.

"Like you don't know," Joel snickered. He looked at me for a minute. "You really don't know?" Suddenly, all there eyes were on me, disbelief shining through to accommodate my cluelessness.

"That was Falon Hale. And the other girl was Michelle Grizzly. They don't exactly like each other, as you can see," Marie spoke up, eyeing the blonde who now sat at a table.

"They don't like each other?" Ashton barked. "That's putting it lightly."

"I can't say I blame her. Michelle's always teasing her." Joel replied, a look of sympathy altering his expression.

"Why?" I ask, curiosity causing me to stare blankly at him. Instead of Joel, it was Ashton who chose to answer.

"Well, Luna, she's a lesbian... And she's open about it. Some people just can't accept that." I was too shocked to reply. That was the last thing I had expected to hear. It was such a stupid reason to pick on someone. So what if she liked other girls, was that anyone else's business but her's? Suddenly, I was furious. I was glad Falon had stood up for herself. Before I could reply, the bell rang that signified lunch was over, and everyone filed out of the cafeteria, me and my friends heading in different directions as we made our way to fifth period. I called out a good-bye, looking back as I turned the corner. Suddenly, I bumped into someone and nearly fell over. Books fell from my grasp, and papers flew away, fluttering into the wind brought on by the rushing students.

I looked up at the person I had clumsily plowed into. It was Falon. She was bending over picking up my books. Before I could scoop down to help her, she popped back up and held them out to me.

"You dropped these," she laughed, handing them out to me. I suddenly became very nervous for no apparent reason.

"Thank you. I'm sorry for bumping into you like that," I stammered, taking them from her hold. Our hands briefly touched and she smiled. By this time, the halls were empty around us.

"It's no problem. I saw you in the cafeteria..." she let her words hang in the air and I fumbled for a response. Why did she make me feel so flustered? What was I suppose to say? That I was staring because I was being as nosey as the rest of them? But that's not why I was staring... I was staring because I was fascinated with the way her hair had blown back as she stood over Michelle, standing up for her right to like whomever she chose. But I couldn't tell her that! Before I could say anything, she reached down to pick up the cross necklace I was wearing around my neck. It was shaped like a key. "This is very pretty," she confided, eyeing it peculiarly. "Just like you." She put the necklace back, slipping the cold bonze inside my shirt. She let her hand linger before pulling it back.

She was smirking. And I was still standing there, dumbstruck, speechless in the face of her confidence. There was an air of arrogance around her, but it wasn't unpleasant. I felt like she was teasing me. My heart quickened as she continued to stare at me with her peculiar expression. "I've always liked redheads," She smiled, heading off to her class without another word. After a minute, I caught my breath and heading to my fifth period, art. Shakily, I opened the door and walked in. I looked at the clock. I was almost ten minutes late. The teacher looked in my direction.

"Do you have a tardy slip?" She questioned. I shook my head and she motioned for me to come to her desk. She wrote something down on a piece of paper and handed it to me. "Detention tomorrow. You had no reason to be late.. and nearly ten minutes at that. Well, I should- " I tuned out the rest of what she was jabbering on about. All I could think of was that I would be sitting in a classroom all day with Falon tomorrow. I didn't know if I was scared, excited, nervous, or all three...
