This is a rough draft and I look forward to all of your comments!  Comments will help me improve this story.  Enjoy!

She was definitely lost. “Damn it!” She cursed out loud. This could not actually be happening. She was horrible with maps, couldn't read a compass, and it was getting dark quick. Looking around again all she saw were trees and ferns, no path.

Why the hell did she have to go so far off the path to pee. Slipping the straps from her backpack off her back she let it fall to the ground. Sighing heavily she sat down on it. Putting her elbows on her knees she rested her forehead in her palms. She tried to think. What the hell was she supposed to do now?

She was running from vampires who hunted at night. She was screwed. Should she climb a tree? Hide? Where? “Damn, Damn, Damn.” She cursed again. It was only supposed to take thirty minutes to get off this blasted mountain.

If they caught her, there would definitely be hell to pay. She had found their lab. Where they take the unlucky souls to be harvested. She had pictures. Proof. And now she would die for her efforts. She pulled her cell phone from her pocket and stared at the lack of bars. Well, she better at least prepare to fight.

A cold chill moved over her as she thought about all those people back at that lab. Hooked up to incubators to keep them alive only so the blood suckers could continue harvesting their blood. She didn't know how long they could live like that, but it was cruel. She wondered if unhooked, if they could survive on their own. Could she save them? Ha. She couldn't even save her self.

She sure as hell didn't want to end up like one of them. She would die before that happened. Letting her hands drop to her pack to help support herself, she realized it was already twilight. It wouldn't be long now before they started hunting her. Quickly she pulled the memory stick from her camera and stuck it in a plastic bag. They were sure to search her and her belongings. She placed the memory stick in a plastic sandwich bag and placed it under a rock at the base of a tree. Hopefully someone someday would find it. Probably not but it was all that she could do. Her pack was heavy and hauling it anymore would slow her down, so she left it. If she found the trial she might still have a chance to out run them.

Ha.

3 Days Later

The phone call came in at 9:00am. Her sister was missing. Kelly couldn't believe it. At first she thought it was some sort of practical joke. Her sister went hiking. Ha! She'd been trying to get Carrie hiking for years. This couldn't be happening. She could barely breath. A search party had been put together and the sheriffs department promised they would do everything possible to find her missing sister. Missing. Carrie was the most loud and outgoing person she knew. She was a social butterfly. How could she possibly be missing. And alone? Someone had to have been with her. She never went anywhere alone. It just wasn't in her nature.

She dressed quickly. She was going to join the search party weather they wanted her to or not. They said she had disappeared on Squirrel Mountain, not thirty minutes from Kelly's house. She had hiked it many times. The trail was easy and it would be nearly impossible to get lost. Unless of course you wondered off the path. Ferns grew as high as five, six feet in spots. Damn it! She better be OK. She had been acting strange lately. Kelly shook her head as she grabbed her purse off the coffee table.

Her sister had recently been obsessed with vampires. She'd been going to underground clubs and swore they really existed. Insisted that they were harvesting humans for blood. That they stole them. That they had a secret facility in the mountain. “Shit!” Kelly spit out. Why hadn't her sister just listened to her. Why hadn't Kelly kept a closer eye on Carrie. This was going to be bad. And her sister was not on Squirrel Mountain.

She had to be on Blood Mountain.

She could hear them.

They were close.

She still hadn't found the damn path. What the hell were they waiting for. She'd wanted to build a fire, but because she had foolishly left her pack behind that was impossible now. It was cold. Not really cold she guessed in the fifties, but cold enough for her to have gooseflesh covering her body. Or maybe that was from the fear.

“Alright I've had enough come and get me already!” She yelled spinning in a circle with her arms held out. She was hungry too. Why had she left her pack behind? Dumb, dumb, dumb. If she survived the night her sister would kill her herself. If Kelly would have just agreed to come with her none of this could be happening. It was dark now. Really dark. Even if there had been a full moon the canopy of trees would have prevented any light from getting through anyway. She sat down with her back pressing against a tree she had just ran into. It was useless trying to continue on in the dark. She couldn't see a thing.

“You know you shouldn't be out here after dark alone.” A deep male voice came from entirely to close by.

“No shit.” She mumbled, trying to control the shake in her voice. Was she hearing voices now or was it the real thing. Her stomach growled loudly as she buried her head in her hands again.

“There's wild animals out here you know.” The voice came again.

“Like you?” She was able to whisper. Soft laughter fallowed.

“I'm no wild animal.” The voice said. She moved so the her head was buried in her knees with her arms now covering her head.

“Are you scared.” He asked. She kept silent. The prick was toying with her. He probably wanted her to beg for her life. To cry. She had read that they liked the weak. Well she wasn't weak. She had a surprise for him.

“You don't need to be scared of me. I'm only trying to help.” His voice was getting closer. “All you have to do is give me the memory stick from your camera and I will give you a flashlight and guide you to the path. Your only about ten minutes from the bottom.”

“Screw you. You'll hook me up to one of those damn machines and harvest my blood until I'm dead. Go to hell you blood sucking creep!” She yelled. She got the reaction she wanted. As soon as she felt his hands on her arms she sprung. Pulling the steak up quickly she shoved it toward with heart with all her might. His hand caught her wrist within an inch of contact.

“You really shouldn't have done that.”
