Chapter 1

“If I would’ve known I’d have to say goodbye, I would’ve tried harder to keep from falling for you.” Seeing the tears well in my eyes, he pulled me into a tight hug.

“Shh, it’s going to be okay, Blaise. You’re going to be okay,” Ben encouraged, slowly stroking my head. Laughter sounded from the corner of the big room.

“Now, why would you put such an empty promise in your little lady’s head? Let’s go. Boss is getting impatient,” one of the guards said in a sharp tone. I glanced up at Ben to see his reaction to the man’s comment. His jaw was clenched tight, and red was creeping up his neck. They’re not allowed to do this. He didn’t do anything wrong. Well, besides loving me. That was definitely not supposed to happen. Nor was it allowed. My thoughts were interrupted by Ben’s soothing voice.

“It’s time for me to go, babygirl,” he whispered.

“Please, not yet. You can’t leave me yet. They’re not going to keep their promise. They’ll kill you,” I choked as more tears fell down my cheeks.

“I don’t have a choice, here. I broke the rules. I fell in love with a mortal, and now I have to pay the consequences.”

“What, by being killed? That’s not apart of the consequence!”

“Blaise, if I had a choice, I’d st--.”

“Enough. It’s time to say goodbye to your boyfriend,” the other guard cut off. Both men charged at us with annoyed looks on their faces.

Ben looked down at me, glancing into my eyes. I was about to say something more, but he quickly sealed his lips over mine. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and deepened the kiss. Too soon, he was ripped from my hold and being drug away by the two men.

“I love you, Blaise. Forever,” he called out. Then, he was gone, and I was standing alone in the middle of a dark, cold warehouse.

8 Months Earlier

It’s the first day of junior year and I couldn’t be less excited. Usually, I’m not so bitter about school, but since my dad left my mom and I this summer, everything’s been dull. My mother has been trying her best to keep us afloat these last couple of months, but lately, she’s struggling to stay together. I don’t blame her, either. It would be devastating to be left by the love of your life for a newer, younger woman. I crawled out of bed and headed to the bathroom to get ready for another dreaded day.

When I stepped into the kitchen, my mother greeted me with a smile and a kiss on the cheek.

“Good morning, honey. How’d you sleep last night?” she asked in her usual pleasant voice.

“Same as usual,” I mumbled, “never seems to change.” For some reason, I’ve been having nightmares every night since my father left on my seventeenth birthday. It’s the same one, too. The one where I’m laying in the middle of a meadow with the sunlight shining through the trees. But, then the sun is covered up by clouds, and it starts down pouring. I can’t see anything until a dark figure appears on the opposite side of the clearing. Suddenly he’s standing right in front of me, and that’s when I wake up.

“Blaise?” she asked, bringing me back to reality.

“Huh?” I replied confusingly.

“I asked if you wanted any breakfast before you head out.”

“Oh, um, no it’s okay. I’ll catch something at school.”

“Okay, honey. Have a great first day. I’ll see you after work,” she said as she planted a kiss on my head.

“Yeah,” I replied. Grabbing my backpack, I headed to school.
