Twisted and Dysfunctional

Margret had lied to her mother about staying after school for basketball try out. It was mid season , there was no way the coach would permit her to try out  not until next season. Another problem with her lie Margret was not the athletic type . When it came to Physical Education, or sports, Margret was queen of the ditch. She had successfully cut every gym class this year.

She felt guilty. She knew deep in her mind and in her heart what she had done was wrong. Margret knew from experience, every wrong decision brings painful consequences. If she were the parent of an adult child such as herself, she would use corporal punishment.

The lies were a temporary reprieve from the things she hated most; The School bus,  No one had ever asked why  Margret dislike the bus . The older adults in her life did not care to know what happened on board Poplarville Public School buses. Each member of her extended family had their own lives, their own concerns. No one had time to investigate the problems of  Margret .

Deliberately missing the bus ; pretending to have a valid reason for being on campus after 3 pm were temporary reprieves from being at Home and enslaved  her mother. For a few hours from 3 pm until 5 pm Margret was free. Hidden here in the bushes no one would beat her, While her actions may border on psychotic , no one here would say  she was retarded ; No one here would call her a monster. Or a born psychopath.

Each time Margret pulled this childish prank she hoped to find the courage to run. She wanted to run, with all her heart she wanted to run . Where would she run too. Other young woman from this school had ran . Where did they go? When they returned home  the girls were sorry for hurting their parents but, the family talked and through open conversation the situation , for those girls  improved. Margret

But, Margret  wasn’t running She  was hiding  behind the Azalea bushes and other flowering shrubs . This was perhaps, her one and only chance so why was she sitting on the ground behind the shrubbery ? Why had she not put her feet in gear and walked away  from the life she hated ?  True if she ran she did not know where she was running to. She had no idea who she could run to. Where do women like  her go when they run ?

For now , She wanted to avoid detection . She wanted to avoid calling her mother for as long as possible . Silently she observed the faculty members who remained on campus . One by one they completed their purpose for being there . They each said their  farewell to the others. Then one by one they got in their cars and drove home.

Margret  Thought , Those teachers, the principal , they have homes, they have families, and they choose to go home How wonderful. Their lives must be . How wonderful, it would be if she had a home instead of a house , a place of abuse and torture to return to when her day was over .

Margret  did not want to be here on school property, she did not want to live her life hiding in fear . But, for now this was the only solution she  had .  School was not the problem ; It was her classes and her teachers. Margret was failing every class .

she could sleep here behind the azaleas , or perhaps she could sleep on the concrete floor in one of the locker rooms . Maybe, she could sleep in the girl’s bathroom.  The problem was she would  be a vagrant . She would be a homeless person. If she lived on school property she would draw attention to the fact , she had a house but she was homeless .

Nutrition and hydration  , The school was  meeting those needs already.  In the place everyone considered to be Margret’s home there wasn’t any water . Eve either would not or could not pay the city water  company . There wasn’t any electricity , The power  company was another expense Eve had not met. Without water and electricity the house was without sanitation, heat or cooling . The kitchen cabinets were empty . Eve was unable to find  the time or the resources to go grocery shopping.

Eve worked every hour  she could. She was a waitress at the local truck stop. She had her jewelry business ; she sold Merlite Jewelry , and Stanley home products . Eve  was working toward opening three businesses of her own. She would own and operate South Side Café, White’s Truck Stop, and the Zodiac club across the state line in Louisiana. When Eve came home it was to beat Margret and sleep .

When she was detected , and she would be Margret knew what to expect. There would be an ugly phone conversation between Margret and her mother over responsibility. Margret knew she should be more responsible. She knew normal 20 year old women did not hide behind shrubbery to avoid going home. She knew this was not  the solution to her problems at home . Still Margret did not know how she should deal with the dysfunction at home.

She had tried talking to older “ wiser “ family members who refused to believe her. Maybe, they believed taking what Margret had confided in them directly back to the mother was helpful. The same was true for her youth director , and her pastor .  It was helpful, it helped her mother find new reasons to  mentally, physically, emotionally, and sexually continue the abuse. The one thing Eve didn’t need was an excuse to hurt  Margret .

For twenty years Eve had beaten and  tortured Margret in an attempt to imprint on her “ What happens in this house ; Stays in this house. Our private life is none of their business. Margret learned the sooner she became unconscious , the sooner the punishment ended.

Margret had confided in her teachers. They either could not believe the horror she described or they chose not to become involved .

But back to the frightened woman/ child hidden in the shrubbery , The time was rapidly approaching when Margret would have to phone home . She would first face the verbal abuse, the psychological abuse, and the emotional abuse. Her mother would come or would send someone for her. When she was behind the locked door of her home the physical abuse would begin. First Eve, would begin spanking her with a wooden slat 1 inch wide. This spanking would continue until the slat broke . Then her mother would pause just long enough to remove the slipper from her foot and resume the bare bottom spanking. The slipper spanking would continue until the wear produced holes in the shoe. Then there would be  another pause while Eve retrieved the belt or an extension cord to elevate the punishment to the equivalent of a flogging or whipping. The punishment would end when Margret collapsed or pools of blood collected around her feet.

Margret knew she was wrong to lie . She admitted she was wrong to have deliberately missed the bus. She deserved some form of punishment but, did she deserve to be beat unconscious ? Was it necessary for her mother to draw blood ?
