"Thank you for coming to Ace Hardware's, come again!" I exclaimed. Our stupid mantra for Ace Hardware's was slowly killing me inside. The customer could probably sense the sarcasm dripping from my lips.
"Hey Jess," my colleague Sophie said. She leaned over from her desk to mine and grinned. "There's a hot guy checking you out. And I mean, really hot." Sophie knew my taste in guys, so she was right when she said really hot.
"You had me at 'hot guy'," I replied, staring at him. He was gorgeous. Almost like a human Adonis. His dark hair was flawlessly tousled, his skin like porcelain and pale green eyes. I could sense the six-pack in his tight Henley. He casually walked over to my desk.

"Can I just buy these?" he said with a husky voice. He didn't really look at me when he spoke, but his voice was enough to send shivers through my spine.
"Sure," I said. I began to scan the items but I stopped when he took a sharp intake of breath. "Are you okay?" I asked him. He stared straight into my eyes and blinked after he realized what I'd said.
"Yes, I'm fine. Great." he replied, taking the items and putting a $20 bill on the counter. He looked at me again and blurted out, "I'm sorry if this sounds weird, but would you like to go to dinner with me? My name's Dane."
I'd never actually seen a really hot guy get nervous because of a girl. It felt flattering. With my dark raven hair, big blue-grey eyes and 5 ft 3 dancer's frame, most people found me pretty. Maybe I just had extremely high standards. But what was some dinner? "Well Dane," I replied, leaning over. "You're lucky because my shift's finished, so we can. My name's Jess by the way."

"This is my car," Dane said, pointing over to a glimmering Volvo. It was like a diamond in a pack of coal.
"Nice." I replied, sliding into the passenger's seat.
"Do you want some Italian food, Jess?"
"Sure, I love Italian." And with that, he zoomed off into the sunset. (not really, obviously)

"This place's food is amazing!" I said, swirling my spaghetti around with my fork. Dane had taken me to an Italian restaurant called Lorenzo's and it seemed like he had great food taste. I took a swig of my champagne glass and decided to interrogate him. "So why haven't I seen you around town? I'm pretty sure I would have noticed you."
"I just moved here, that's why." Dane replied. "I was just getting some paint for the walls. What about you? What's your life story, Jess?" At first, Dane was a pretty nervous guy, but he seemed really kind. And when I rambled on and on, he genuinely looked like he was listening.
"Jess, do you wanna come to my place? To talk some more, seeing as this place is a little crowded." he asked. God, that voice kept sending chills through me. After a short pause, Dane added, "It's your choice, of course."
Before I could answer, the waiter interrupted us with his fake French accent. "This is ze bill. Don't forget ze tip." I reached into my bag for my purse but Dane put my bag away.
"I'll pay." Dane said, and I smiled. What a gentleman. He put a couple notes inside and we left the restaurant.

"Jess?" Dane asked.
"Yeah?" I looked over at him from the passenger seat. I couldn't help but admire his Henley again.
"There's something I need to tell you, if this goes any further." Dane looked a little nervous, while tons of possible things he would say were flying through my brain. But not the one he actually said. "I'm a vampire."
Not meaning to, I burst in laughter. "Good one." When he didn't say anything, I paused. "Wait, what?"
"I am a vampire." Dane said. "Seriously."
