She stood on the stone parapet of the bridge. The river flowed under it and its murmur brought back memories of another time. She had always loved its murmur, the sound of water moving, heading somewhere. It was a cool day and one of her first visits to the city after some time.
She saw buildings she had never noticed before, towers where men and women worked and lusted for money, sex, and power. She smiled to herself and went on looking at people, people rushing to work, rushing home, rushing without even thinking,  just bent on getting somewhere.
She remembered herself as she used to be, dressed with the utmost care to go to work, dressed in loose-fitting clothes to do her shopping, just another person in the crowd.
She saw the places she used to visit, the museums she had loved, the restaurants she had favoured before resorting to cooking her own meals to bring to work or just putting up with her hunger till she got home and she smiled.
People kept coming and going, no one seemed aware of her presence there, no one had time to care perhaps. Good,  all she wanted was to remember her life in peace, while the river flowed under the bridge she had once loved so much. She still did, although she had changed.
She thought of the first time she had had sex, it was almost a cliché and yet she welcomed its memory. She felt a rush of tenderness for the red-haired freckled boy whom she had smuggled into her room at the boarding house one night, they both had taken pains not to be heard by anyone while they fucked the night away...
The boy had left in the morning and the boarding house owner had said nothing but later on had told her she had to leave.
"My house is not a brothel, you see.", she had said curtly.
She had left then and had found another room, things of that kind had not mattered that much to her at that age.
The red-haired boy had been followed by others, she remembered them vividly, treasured their desire for her and her own lust for them, for their hard cocks glistening with pre-cum and eager to be stroked to their final explosion...
And then she remembered the One, the boy with long hair and motorcycle jacket, the one whose jeans seemed to dance somewhat on his slim hips... She yearned for his touch, for the sound of his voice, for his piercing gaze on her. She remembered their brief time together, the distance and the years that had failed to wither her feelings for him.
She remembered his body and the pleasure hs had given her, the frenzy that had engulfed both of them. She wondered where he was, after all that time and all the women he must have seen and fucked in his search for pleasure and sighed softly.
She could see him if she so decided but she chose to do it on another visit. After all, when you are a spirit you have a lot of time...all the time you lacked before.

Ah, the ghost returns. Well, I like the way that ended. It might have been interesting to have 'the spirit' tell us in first person.
It's an interesting progression from such a benign beginning, observing the crowds and the buildings, listening to the water, remembering a life lived. The fact that we hear about lovers and lost love in the later part of the piece emphasizes the importance of relationships in our lives.
