My Bodyguard Michael

By Laila Lola

My bodyguard is a sharpshooter in the Texas National Guard. Michael jokes and says he is a sniper/assassin. You definitely don’t want to mess with this guy, he doesn’t miss a shot. If you talked to him you would think that he is a mild mannered man. As he says ‘I have stared death in the face, but he blinked first!!!’

Michael was born to a Pennsylvania Dutch family but grew up in Danbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Florida State University, joining the army straight out of college at age 21. His dad died of cancer when he was only 9 years old. As he explained, his dad was there at breakfast and died before dinner on the operating table. Michael never had a chance to say goodbye, he didn’t even know his father had cancer. He has older brothers and sisters that all had grown up and left home by the time he was born, so he basically grown up as an only child. From what I understand his older brothers were disappointed that he never pursued a business career but stayed in the military.

Michael is divorced. He said he came home one night early and his wife was in bed with another man. He gave them 60 seconds to clear out. All of his wife’s things were on the lawn the next morning when she came to get them. He never remarried because he doesn’t want to put a wife through the hell so many of his friend’s spouses go through every time they go on tour. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love sex….because he does.

Michael fought in Desert Storm and was in Bagdad when that leader’s statue was pulled down by its citizens in the square. Then later in 2005, when the US troops arrived in the Afghanistan‘s Valley of Death, Korengal, they claimed the high ground of the tiny, isolated valley, ‘it was an impossible mission.’ The soldiers drew fire and attention from Taliban and fighters wanting to enter Afghanistan from Pakistani to tie up insurgents away from more populated areas of Afghanistan. The US troops were being shot at from above, like fish in a tank.

Since we live in Texas we get more than our share of tornadoes, hurricanes and flooding. Michael volunteered to work in search and rescue in Haiti when they had that terrible earthquake. When Governor Abbott called in the Texas Guard, Texas Task Force One, to help in the flooded areas, he answered the call again and is currently helping in the flooded areas of Texas towns and rivers. There have been at least 50 high-water rescues performed since the flooding began along the Blanco. He was working in Blanco, Texas a few days ago, where he helped to rescue several families in the RV Park, they looked for the bodies of the father and son that did not heed the warning to not across the bridge over the Blanco River and the bridge gave underneath them as they crossed.  Rushing water is a very powerful thing. Daniel later swam into the river to rescue someone and now is in Wimberley, looking for the 8 members of 2 families that have been missing since Sunday. The former Nueces County Commissioner Joe McComb has confirmed that his daughter-in-law and two grandchildren are missing after the house they were in was swept away by floodwater. McComb's son Jonathan was seriously hurt while staying at a river house with other couples when a wall of water took the home off its foundation. It was among an estimated 350 homes that were swept away by the flooding, displaced 1,000 residents.

The devastation was unreal, hundreds of trees were uprooted, broken up and flatten like being run over with a lawn mower. In most places only foundations remained of where homes were before, some homes were still there but completely washed off their foundations. What is left behind of the homes look like broken Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs or smashed Lego pieces.  It looked like bombs had gone off everywhere. Nothing was left untouched. No birds could be heard, they had all left. Many bridges and roads have been completely washed away, with yard sheds, cars, trash bins and refrigerators flipping over constantly, bobbing and rushing madly by in the raging flow of the rain-swollen river.

Last night about 630 pm he found one dead body about 12 miles down river from where he was last seen.  Eight more inches of rain was expected over night. The next morning he headed back to walk along the log and debris clogged river banks in Wimberley and found another victim before noon. All bodies that found were reverently placed in body bags for identification later.

If you can, please give to the American Red Cross.  These people have NOTHING Left to go home to!!!!!!
