Fire in my HeartPart 1

My fire station crew met Gail about two years ago when the gas line was cut in the driveway next to her home by the cable company. It was 106 degrees in the shade. I had knocked on her door to ask her to leave due to possible gas build up. She had just made a pitcher of lemonade that she was going to take out to her swimming pool to have while she was sunbathing, but she brought it outside for all of the fire crew to drink. This was the normal thing for her to do. If she saw the firemen in the Kroger, she would step in front of us and run her credit card through the machine before we could stop her and then just walk away, waving her hand.

Today was going to be different. Gail was in her little convertible with the top down in the left turn lane in front of the fire truck. She had looked into her rear mirror, smiled and waved at us. When our turn light had turned green to proceed, a big rig ran the red light slamming her car into the front of our fire truck and she was pinned in by the steering wheel, not only that the engine had caught fire and she was unconscious. We all jumped out of the truck and ran to her car. I cut the safety belt and Jim used the jaws on her door, while Mike used the fire extinguisher. We got her out and on to the side of the road just as her car blew up.  She was not breathing and the EMTs were grabbing there gear, but I started CPR anyway. The big rig driver came over to us and said,

“She pulled out in front of me.”  We all looked at him in disbelief. We all saw him run the red light plus the intersection was on video. The EMTs took over and soon she was at the hospital.

A few days later we all went to the hospital to check on her. She had been in a coma since I had pulled her out. She had a concussion, cracked ribs, both legs were broken and her pelvis was cracked. The guys did not know but I had been checking on her every day calling the hospital about her. A few minutes after we arrived she finally woke up. She had the prettiest blue eyes and long blonde hair. She looked at all of us and said, “What happened, why am I in the hospital?”

“You had a bad accident. But you are okay now, except for some broken bones. It was a good thing we were right behind you.”

“I don’t remember. Behind me?”

“A big rig ran a red light and hit you. We got you out of your car.” I really did not want to tell her how bad it was, anymore than I wanted to remember it myself.

“Thank you, I really owe you for that.”

“No, you have been paying it forward, quite a few times at the grocery store.”

The next time I called to check on her, she was being discharged to go home. The police were there getting her statement. Although she did not know what happened, since it was all a blank. She was in a wheel chair and her oldest daughter was there to take her to her home, since Gail was a 2 story villa. When she saw me she smiled and introduced me to her daughter and told her that I was her savior. I shock my head and just said that ‘I had been the first to get to her’.  I gave Gail a slip of paper with my cell number and said ‘Give me a call if you get lonely and need to talk.’

A couple of days later I got a text. “Thank you again for rescuing me. The police department detective showed me the video. I owe my life to you. Gail”

This is part 1. More to come.
