There was a time, not long time ago we lived in an enchanted world. We were celebrating holy week in a kingdom of the West in Arkadia, where the Holy Land is located. Most servants here were rescued from their tragic life of their past, others were recruited. I was one of them. I was turned into a nun by the Arkadian Resistance after I was saved from a group of demons that destroyed our village and nearly killed me years ago.

My name is Lailah, one of the humble servants in Holy Land. I was sitting all alone while watching my friend, Ariel who is waltzing gracefully with Vergil, the prince of the West Arkadia, and the others who did the same thing as they swayed themselves, beating the music’s tempo perfectly. I was never been attractive to any males here. Perhaps males nowadays were attracted to a total sanguine like her. I am much more of a melancholic temperament, a total contrast of her. Males these days would probably found it dull to females like me. How I wish I could find someone to love and love me as the way I am.

Ariel admitted that she have romantic feelings towards Vergil. I have to admit the prince is stunning in physical appearance.  Godlike body and a beautiful face, every woman would have gone insane for his touch, but not for me. I preferred a man who is honest and love only one woman (aside when he has a daughter, of course). Somehow, Ariel approached me and sat beside me…

“Why so melancholy, Lailah?”

“I wasn’t. It seems like a dream come true to you today, Ariel.”

“Yes it is. If this is only a dream, I wish I would never wake up.”

She said with a chuckle. Her positive personality only brightens up the mood. No wonder why everyone loves her, but I suppose I should consider myself lucky because I am friends with her. But sometimes… she could be quite naïve that leads her to idiocy.

“By the way, would you like to go to Earth with me someday?”

“Why asking such a stupid question to me, Ariel.”

I chuckled at her lame joke but when I look into her eyes, I could tell she is serious…

“But it seems it is impossible to achieve that. If only the gods on the heavens will hear prayers from someone like us, maybe we can.”

“Of course we can, Lailah. We are nuns remember?”

“True to that but the gods on the heavens will not always grant wishes. They knew the best for us.”

“Then let us keep annoying the gods until they will grant us.”

“I think that would do, Ariel.”

We both giggled from our childish conversation but if we keep believe to our dreams, there are possibilities she could be right. I myself wanted to go to Earth as well. So that time, we both made a promise.

But that promise was broken when the clouds have turned dark. Birds were flying everywhere and seek shelter as the danger approaches to the city. Our surroundings had started to get dull as its light is slowly loose its glory. We were startled from the Abaddonian’s ambush when they suddenly attacked us from nowhere. These were the creatures that attacked my village long time ago, and now they have returned when they finally discovered the Holy Land, and claim our city as their own.

My fellow brothers were tortured and defiled like slaughtered animals by those lecher demons. My sisters were raped and humiliated. I managed to defend myself and witnessed my first murder when an Abaddonian soldier attacked me. He punched me and tackled me on the ground and ripped my clothes into shreds, but I managed to stab him with a dagger in his eye before he did something shameful acts on me. I am no fighter I am trained to take care of the wounded. Not knowing another demon was behind me, I was almost slain as I turned around to face my adversary but I was spared from my own death when his ally blocked his sword with his, making him to prevent killing me.

“What are you doing?”

“You may slaughter the others, but not this damsel.”

“She is an enemy, she should be dead!”

“Not until you will be dead first.”

I was shocked and watched in horror when he slashed his own kind with his sword as his ally was screaming in agony. As he is now crawling on the floor getting a hold for his life, he raised his weapon to finish him off. I cannot do anything, I just watched, unable to calm myself down as I am now trembling from fear. When his murderer confronted me, I just look up at him, speechless. I am too small for his height and size that he could crush me so easily.

“Forgive me, Lailah…”

Those were the last words that I’ve heard from him before he fisted me on the stomach. My mind slowly drifted to unconsciousness until darkness took over me.

When I regained my consciousness on one sunny morning, I found myself lying on the ground with dead people.  I could barely get up and stand because of the massive pain on my body. Vultures made a feast at their corpses as their inner parts were pulled out. Some of them were hanged like skinned chickens. I went every place, ignoring the pain in my body as I’ve searched for any survivors, but there is no sign of life. Even Ariel, my closest friend, I cannot find her anywhere.

I wept, knowing that my home is shattered and lost its glory with lifeless things I have given up searching for them. When I noticed a troop of Abaddonian soldiers wandered around in search of life the likes of me, I ran away as cowardice took over me. I left the Holy Land with regret to seek refuge and to start again as a different person.

As soon as that battle happened, our hopes and dreams had now gone forever. And Ariel, my dearest friend, I never saw her again...
