Chapter One

“Oh baby! Give it to me!”

I gritted my teeth at my roommate’s screaming and pinched the bridge of my nose, trying to think of something to drown out the noise. I sure lucked out in the roommate department, I thought to myself as I heard the sound of a headboard banging against the wall.

My roommate, Jamie, was a huge slut and not only that, she was also a sex addict and couldn’t keep her hands off a guy for more than an hour. I was surprised she managed to work, though it was entirely possible that she was banging her co-workers while on the job. Even though I was disgusted by her promiscuity, part of me was also jealous about the fact that she had such an active sex life while I haven’t had sex in almost a year.

The screaming and banging stopped suddenly and I couldn’t help sighing in relief. Unfortunately, my relief was cut short by Jamie barging through the door of my room stark naked. Her tanned skin glistened with a light sheen of sweat and strands of her dark brown hair clung to her pretty face. I picked up the nearest pillow and threw it at her.

“What the hell? Don’t barge into my room like that!” I yelled.

Confusion passed through Jamie’s green eyes as she caught the pillow, “Like what? Unannounced or naked?”

“Both!”

“Okay, so I mustn’t barge in unannounced and naked, got it,” Jamie nodded to herself.

I sighed, “What do you want, Jamie?”

“Oh, yeah, I wanted to ask if you had any lube lying around here,” Jamie smiled.

“No, I don’t,” I muttered.

Jamie shrugged, “Guess he’ll just have to use my juices.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose again, “I don’t want to know.”

“Oh yeah, I also wanted to say that if you’re bored you could totally join us, since Gus, or whatever his name is, is in the mood for a threesome and totally wants to bang you and so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Jamie said.

I toyed with the idea for a moment, before deciding against it. I wasn’t the type for one night stands, unless I’m really drunk or the guy’s a real charmer and I’m extremely horny, plus I didn't like sharing.

“I’m gonna pass, I was thinking about going to Tony’s place for the weekend,” I said.

Tony was one of my best friends, we met when I first started university the year before and we’ve been friends ever since. I always knew that if I needed a place to stay when Jamie was doing her sex binge weekends, I could always call Tony.

“You know it’s weird how you and Tony are so close, but not once have you slept together,” Jamie said.

“Uh, yeah, totally,” I muttered, looking away.

The truth was that Tony and I had slept together once at a party, but we were both drunk out of our minds and we agreed the next morning never to talk about it, so I wasn’t about to tell Jamie that.

“Anyway, it’s probably a good idea to stay there if you plan on getting any sleep this weekend,” Jamie smirked.

I sighed, “I figured as much.”

“Well, lemme get back to, um...yeah,” Jamie said, before walking out of my room.

I shook my head while grabbing my cell phone from the bedside table. I scrolled through my contacts, before finding Tony’s number and hitting dial.

“Hey, Alina! What’s up?” Tony’s deep voice answered on about the third ring.

“Hey, Tony, would it be alright if I crash at your place for the weekend?” As I asked, a scream sounded from Jamie’s room.

Tony laughed, “Jamie at it again?”

“Yeah,” I sighed.

“Yeah, it’s fine if you stay here, Jake is visiting his cousin for the weekend anyway,” Tony said.

“Oh, thank god,” I said.

“I don’t get why you two hate each other so much,” Tony commented.

“Oh, well, because he’s a pompous asshole who thinks every girl is secretly in love with him and can’t take rejection,” I said, my tone turning cold.

“Well at least this time, I don’t have to deal with you two bickering.” Tony said, “Also if you want any of my amazing creamy pasta, you better get here quick.”

“Thanks, Tony,” I laughed and hung up.

I haphazardly threw clothes into a bag, before collecting my toothbrush, toothpaste and hairbrush and placing those in one of the side pockets. I quickly grabbed my phone and some body spray and placed those in another side pocket. I double checked that I had everything I needed, before flinging the bag over my shoulder and leaving the apartment.

I sighed when I stepped out of the apartment building into the cool evening air, the blustery wind whipping my wavy golden hair around my face. I knew I would have to hurry to Tony’s, not only because of the dark clouds hanging over head, but also because the streets were quiet due to the weather.

I hurried down the streets past a few bland grey or brown apartment buildings, but I stopped dead when I spotted something in one of the trash strewn alleys.

I found myself staring at a shimmering oval shaped form; it had an outer ring of ice blue that glowed brightly and an inner circle that was dark blue flowing into black. Dotting the inner circle were tiny glowing white lights that looked similar to stars in the night sky.

I slowly stepped closer to the oval form, mesmerized by it and strangely drawn to it. I slowly reached up at touched it only to have my fingers sink into it and was surprised by how it felt like silk. However, before I could draw my hand back, I was yanked forward and my whole arm sunk into the oval form.

Suddenly my whole body was yanked forward and I found myself being flung through a tunnel of some kind, the flashing white lights I’d seen before flying past me. I looked around frantically, trying to figure out what was going on as I felt my heart beating so fast I thought it was about to burst.

After several minutes, I fell to the ground and felt something cold snap around my neck. When I reached up to my neck, I felt a cold metal band encircling it. Panic rose up in me as I pulled at the band, trying to get it off, but I only succeeded in scratching my skin with my nails each time.

I heard footsteps and I looked up to see a tall man, though bright sunlight cast his face in dark shadows.

“A human woman?” the man said in surprise, before he held out a hand to me, “Well I suppose I should name you.”

I knocked his hand away, “I already have a name, you freak!”

I scrambled to my feet and started running away, I vaguely heard the man yelling for me not to run, but of course I didn’t listen to him. I kept running, but after a few metres, a sharp pain ran down my spine and through all my limbs causing me to collapse in agony. I was in so much pain that my sight began to fade and I was sure that I was about to lose consciousness. I heard footsteps and soon the pain ceased, but my body was exhausted and I couldn't stop myself from slipping into darkness.
