Chapter one

"I'm going to miss you Kev."

“I know you will," Kevin answered with the half smile he always gave her whenever he was teasing. "What is not to miss?"

"On second thought, I take it back," Kylie replied as she stood at the edge of her bed packing her last set of accessories in her black and pink hello kitty handbag. "I will be as happy as a lark when I'm gone." Wishing that the words she uttered were somewhat true, she tried to put on her serious face. But Kevin knew her all too well, he knew that  she would really miss him because truth is, he felt the same way. He has loved her as long as he could remember and the fact that she was leaving him going miles away to university was killing him. But he just couldn't say it, the words just wouldn’t come out no matter how hard he tried. He couldn't even say I miss you too.

Laying on Kylie’s double sized bed, Kevin realized that this may be the last time he would ever enter this room. He looked around trying to take in everything that he could, hoping that it would never leave his memory. He first looked at the white comforter spread that he was laying on which had pink and purple floral pattern which happened to be her favorite from the many she had. Then his eyes went to her white dresser drawer designed especially for her with a heart shaped mirror in the center and eight drawers  having four on each side which he noticed was always well decorated with fuscia and lavenderflowers. The bedside tables on either sides of her bed matched her dressers with two drawers and a lamp each. Her curtains were white with another set of purple over laying the white which she used to darken her room when she wanted to in the day. Her closet doors were also in agreement with the theme of her room and were painted  in white from the natural wooden brown color that it had. The walls were also painted in purple and pink and one could tell just by entering her room what her favorite colors were.

"So what do you want us to do later?" Kylie asked interrupting his thoughts. "I was thinking dinner and a movie."

"It's your night k. "I'm game for anything you decide.”

"Okay...well we will eat out then come home to a movie," Kylie suggested with a worryingly look on her face; wondering why he was so silent for the last couple of weeks. Kevin was always the talkative one, the one with the ideas; he was spontaneous, fun, and adventurous. He knew how to live and enjoy life but lately he had become a bum and she intended to find out was up tonight.

I cannot believe I just said that. "I'm game for anything you decide?" Kevin thought as he made a sandwich for himself and Kylie as she was still busy packing in her room. What kind of response was that? Why am I being so timid? Yes, she's leaving, she has always travelled and she always came back. This is no different, she will be back for holidays and I will have my best friend again. Hoping that by saying it, he would believe it, Kevin knew in his heart that he might lose her and it had been affecting him  for weeks. He knew she would always be his friend, but he was afraid that he might lose that spark, the spark he saw whenever she was with him.

"What is taking you so long with that sandwich?" Kylie exclaimed as she walked down the stairs of her house.

"After all the work I've done this is the thanks I get?" he replied as he handed her the rotisserie chicken sandwich packed with cheese, lettuce,  tomato,  ketchup, mayo and pepper, stacked in that order and cut in a square shaped the way she liked it. He was the only one who could make it the way she liked it remembering what came first and he always did when he was at her house. Kevin always found pleasure in doing things to  make her happy; and he also quietly loved the fact that he was the only guy that her family allowed to walk in and out of the house especially her room.

"Aww...do u want a hug for your hard work?"

"What time do you want me to pick you up?" he asked ignoring her question.

He did it again, asking unusual questions. The Kevin she knew would appear in her room even if she wasn't ready, and nag her until she was. So why was he asking about  picking her up?

"I will call you when I'm ready Kev. Maybe around seven-ish."

"Hello?" Kevin answered is phone as he picked up the car keys of his black 2006 Honda Accord that his father bought him for his graduation present.

“I’m ready when you are," Kylie responded.

"I'll be there in five minutes" Kevin replied feeling his heart skip a thousand beats per second. Why was he nervous? This is his friend, his best friend, he shouldn't be acting  or feeling like this but no matter how he tried he couldn't fight the feeling.

The drive to Kylie’s house which was about a five minute drive without traffic took maybe fifteen minutes on this night. His thoughts consumed him which slowed downhis driving without him even recognizing. As he pulled in to the drive way of the light  blue house he couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness overcome him; this will not be his safe haven anymore.

"I'll be out in a few" Kylie shouted, feeling annoyed that Kevin had been blowing the car horn since he arrived at her house. "I'm fixing my hair". Kylie walked to her room hurriedly to put her hair in a high messy bun. Her hair was easy to do in any style because of the soft texture. It had natural curls but when straightened highlighted the length of her hair which was bra strap length.

As Kevin was about to blow the horn again he saw Kylie approaching his car. She was wearing a light blue peplum dress that hugged her body and showed her perfect voluptuous shape. Her black and blue stilettos gave her an extra five inches from her usual five feet and four inches height which complimented her legs in a way that made them seem as they could go on for days. Her hair was up in a high bun which showed her  high cheek bones and made her almost hazel eyes that she despised for some reason have a natural spark. Kylie was wearing her favorite cherry red victoria secret lip stick  that matched her perfectly even toned caramel skin color. As she entered the car, he got an even closer look at his friend and to him she has never looked more beautiful.

"You look stunning.”

"Thanks Kev, you don't look so bad yourself" Kylie teased.

"I'm being serious k. You look amazingly beautiful tonight."

"Thanks, I guess." Kylie answered, wondering why those words sent a thrill down her  spine, she quickly turned up the radio to an usher song so that it would distract her.

"Alexis told me to tell you safe travel."

"Who?"

"Alice! You starting to forget us already and you're not out of the country yet?"

"Ha-ha, very funny," Kylie answered sarcastically.  "I was listening to the music. Tellher thank you. And try to make this one last okay."

"Yea, sure," he answered.  Alice and Kevin have been together for a year. This was his first serious relationship and he has been making an effort to do things right to stay on her good side. His only problem was that she loved him but he didn't feel the same way. Truth is, he loved someone else, he loved Kylie, but he just wasn't man enough to admit it.

Walking up the steps to Bamboo Village caused memories to flood Kylie’s mind. Bamboo Village was an Asian restaurant that was very well decorated with red walls and white Chinese symbols. The center pieces were beautifully decorated with red and white roses and petals. The ambience was relaxing and it was situated away from the town shutting out the noise and traffic which made it more comfortable. The waiters and waitresses were very well mannered and you couldn't help but give them a tip.

After being seated by a waiter, Kylie remembered the first time they ate at the restaurant which was on her sixteenth birthday. Kevin carried her for a birthday dinner and it became their go to place on most Saturday nights.

"What are you having?" Kevin asked while looking through the menu.

"Umm...I'm having the seasoned rice with mallah chicken and a salad. What are you having? "

“My usual, chicken Caesar salad."

After placing their order, the two friends laughed and talked for hours reminiscing old times from high school. They shared a red velvet cake together for dessert and a cookies and cream ice cream. Throughout their discussion, Kylie started to feel a sense of regret that she didn't choose to go to the University of Technology in Kingston with Kevin.  Who will she share moments like these with, tell her secrets, hang with? Who will be her shoulders for her to cry on? Yes, he will be a call a way but it can never be the same.

"Tonight was fun!" Kylie exclaimed as they pulled into her drive away. "Too bad we can't get to watch the movie, it's already after twelve."

"Yea, it was great! We always have good times together. Too bad you have an early flight."

Walking to the door Kevin stopped abruptly and looked at her with a nervous look on his face reminding Kylie of how weird he had been acting earlier and she just remembered to ask him about it. "Don't forget me Kylie" he whispered softly.

"I can never forget you, what are you talking about?”

"No, you don't understand. I want you to always remember me." With those words heplaced his hands on her cheeks and sealed his words with a kiss that was different than what they always shared. It was not a mere friendly kiss on the cheeks or forehead. This kiss was on her lips and it sent an intense fire to rush through Kylie’s body for the first time which caused her knees to weaken and she grabbed his muscular arms for strength.  "I'm going to miss you too kylie. " he finally found the courage to say as he walked away.
