PROLOGUE

His eyes a milk chocolate brown ringed in soft orange red lashes. His freckles prominet against his white skin. I put my hand over his wrapping my fingers around to his palm, feeling him squeeze mine in return. He was the only man I wanted, I felt it as soon as I saw him the first time. At first he wanted me too, showing all the signs and returning the emotions and laughter. I felt it start that day as we made our way in my car to the Oregon coast that something was amiss.

" I have to leave Lexi, my grandmother is sick and she is in Ireland. My family will fly me there, I wish you could come. You would love my grandmother, she is a lot like Mona up on the hill that you like to ride horses with so much." Looking down at our hands I squeeze a little tighter feeling a hole begining in my chest. A darkness seeping into my soul like the plague spreading over Europe, I didnt want to let go.

"You know I can't, work won't let me have the time off, I have begged and pleaded. I have to stay to make ends meet, I can't just pick up and leave a home and animals. I just can't I have so much to look after." My eyes brimmed with tears and I focused on the road while averting my eyes up to keep them from slipping over the edge onto my cheeks.

"I know, it's okay I will only be gone for a few weeks. It will be like I never left." Slipping his hand from mine to answer a text from the cell phone he just pulled out of his pocket. All I could think is it was the two women I knew to be in the middle of Ciaran and I. Alice or Nelly, two women that ruled his life, even now when I thought we were happy, I never even looked at another man. Apparently that didn't apply to both of us, I was envious of the attention he gave to them. I was being childish again and I knew better than to say anything because it would only start an argument.

"Well do you want me to wait for you?" My last little hope, what was to become of us? A summer fling or him just using me till his next catch. A woman who will let him be a home body to do as he pleased?

"If you want, I don't want to ask you to." He looked away from me and I could tell it wasn't sadness or the fact he was leaving me that he couldn't face me.N

"Okay." I didn't know what else to do so I turned up the radio and waited till I got home, after watching him leave to his friends house I cried. Feeling put out I started to bake a cake. By the time I realized what I was doing and the tears had subsided I had a cake with icing, fresh baked cookies, and just putting dinner rolls into the oven. Calm overtook me, cooking always brought a sense of peace to me.

By the end of the week I had driven him to the terminal, goodies I had baked all that week stuffed into his carry on. I knew it would either get taken at check in or smashed while on the flight to Ireland. I watched out the windows as the plane took off and I had an aching feeling that this was the end of my bright future with a young man who needed a bit of work but could be the best thing that ever happened to me. Sighing I walked out of the terminal heading to my car, this was going to be a piece of cake, carrot cake. Laying down to sleep in the wee hours of the morning after I got home and closed my eyes to the first time I had slept alone in a long time.
